” | — Guest Star Bugzzy What's the Bug Idea? Pause Screen description in Kirby Star Allies |
Bugzzy is a Mid-Boss in the Kirby series, debuting in Kirby's Adventure, where he gives out the Backdrop ability. He later returns in Kirby Super Star, this time yielding the Suplex ability and also acting as its helper. Bugzzy also appears in both games' remakes, Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land and Kirby Super Star Ultra, as well as being fought in Kirby's Avalanche.
Bugzzy also appears in Kirby Star Allies, where he can be recruited as a Friend after being defeated. Here again he represents the Suplex ability, and can perform Friend Throw.
Physical appearance
The appearance of Bugzzy is similar to that of a stag beetle, but he has a humanoid body structure, with only four limbs and an upright posture. He wears white gloves and shoes, though in some games, his shoes match the purple color of his carapace. He has a blue thorax with two pairs of wings on his back encased in elytra, which he can use to fly in a similar manner to Beetley and Beetle Kirby.
In battle, Bugzzy can shoot ladybugs. He can also stomp on Kirby, and toss him around. He will typically attack by either charging straight forward or jumping on Kirby from above. In Kirby Star Allies, he is also capable of lunging from the air. In games before Kirby Star Allies, Bugzzy does not drop Dropped Stars when he attacks, meaning that only his ladybugs can be used against him.

Kirby's Adventure / Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land
Bugzzy appears in Kirby's Adventure and its remake as one of the Mid-Bosses, and is the only enemy that gives the Backdrop ability. Once Kirby is in his grasp, Bugzzy will either leap forward and drive him into the ground, slam him backwards or pound him repeatedly. Bugzzy may also fly into the air and hover in pursuit of Kirby, and will ensnare him if he gets close enough. Bugzzy supplies ammunition to use against himself in the form of two Bugzzy Jrs. that he releases into the air. These ladybugs slowly flutter and home in on Kirby. A faster variation of Bugzzy appears exclusively in the secret path of Rainbow Resort's second stage.

In Kirby's Avalanche, Bugzzy appears in Stage 7 as one of Kirby's opponents. Here, he is depicted as being seemingly incapable of speech, instead greeting Kirby with a loud roar. His in-game abbreviation is "BUGZ" and his Puyo Puyo equivalent is Zombie.
Kirby Super Star / Kirby Super Star Ultra
Bugzzy appears as a Mid-Boss in Kirby Super Star and its remake, Kirby Super Star Ultra. He is often fought in cave areas, and attacks by stomping and using suplex moves. In this game, Bugzzy is weak to fire-based attacks and ice-based attacks. When inhaled after being defeated, Bugzzy grants the Suplex Copy Ability. Bugzzy also appears as the Helper representing said ability.

Bugzzy also appears as an opponent in The Arena and Helper to Hero, as part of "Mid-Boss All-Stars 1". He is not faced in The True Arena. He is also pictured on a card in Kirby Card Swipe.
Kirby Mass Attack
Bugzzy appears in two of Kirby Mass Attack's Sub-Games, those being Strato Patrol EOS and Kirby Quest. In the former, Bugzzy appears as a flying opponent to be shot down. In the latter, he appears in Stages 4 and 36 as an opponent with 240 HP.
Kirby Star Allies
Bugzzy returns in Kirby Star Allies as a mid-boss and as a recruitable ally. This marks his first appearance in 3D, and he has been given a bit of a remodel; sporting a larger head in proportion to his body. He still provides the Suplex ability when inhaled, and reprises his role as the ability's friend. As a mid-boss, he has access to new attacks upon grabbing someone and can do a Dash Grab move in the air. A stronger version of Bugzzy also appears in later stages, with a black exoskeleton, a red belly, red eyes and purple limbs. This version can also use the Pinpoint Kick as an attack, among minor alterations to his pre-existing moves.
The following is a list of attacks Bugzzy can perform as a mid-boss in Kirby Star Allies. Attack names are conjectural unless otherwise stated.
Bugzzy's attacks as a mid-boss in Kirby Star Allies | |||
---|---|---|---|
Attack | Description | Variants | |
Jump | Bugzzy jumps in place either once or three times. Some of these jumps leave behind stars that can be used as ammunition against Bugzzy. | ||
Dash Grab | Bugzzy pulls back a bit and then proceeds to lunge forward. If he grabs someone, he will immediately perform one of these moves on the affected target: Back Breaker, Body Slam, Big Suplex or Pile Driver. If he misses, then after a set distance, he will stagger for a short time. If the move is started close to a wall, he might slam into it, knocking himself out for a few seconds. Stars drop only if Bugzzy smashes into the wall. | His regular version may do this move twice in a row in the second phase, with brief charge-up times for each. His harder version can turn around once or twice before stopping. He will smash into the wall after the second turnaround. His harder version can also do the standard Dash Grab in midair instead of just on ground level. The second phase of his harder version's battle might have him instead aim a midair Dash Grab diagonally downwards. Upon hitting the ground, he knocks himself out for a brief second. | |
Ladybugs | Bugzzy summons some ladybugs from underneath his wings, which then fly forward while hovering up and down. The insects can be sucked up and then spat back at Bugzzy. | Most of the time, two ladybugs are summoned. His harder version summons four ladybugs in the second phase. | |
Fly | Bugzzy flies in the air for a short time, aiming for a certain character's position, before landing on the ground again. | ||
Harder version only | |||
Pinpoint Kick | Bugzzy jumps in the air and then slams down feet-first on a chosen target. This repeats three times. |
Bugzzy's regular variation attacks in a fixed order on loop as follows:
- Jump
- Dash Grab
- Ladybugs x2
- Fly
- Dash Grab
- Ladybugs x2
After losing enough health, Bugzzy abruptly switches to this attack:
- Dash Grab x2
He then attacks in a fixed order on loop as follows:
- Ladybugs x2
- Jump x3
- Dash Grab x2
- Ladybugs x2
- Fly
- Dash Grab
Bugzy's harder variation begins with this attack:
- Dash Grab [turns around once]
He then attacks in a fixed order on loop as follows:
- Pinpoint Kick
- Dash Grab
- Ladybugs x2
- Fly
- Dash Grab [turns around once]
- Ladybugs x2
After losing enough health, Bugzzy will abruptly switch to this pattern:
- Midair Dash Grab
- Pinpoint Kick
- Dash Grab [turns around twice]
- Ladybugs x4
- Midair Dash Grab
- Jump x3
- Dash Grab [turns around twice]
- Ladybugs x4
- Midair Dash Grab
- Fly
- Dash Grab [turns around twice]
- Ladybugs x4
Twin Bugzzy is fought in some stages and on Soul Melter EX of The Ultimate Choice and comes in two varieties. It can consist of one regular and one hard variation or two hard variations, both of which attack in a different order from each other.

In Kirby Star Allies, Bugzzy can be found in the following levels and stages:
Friend Moveset
As a Friend, Bugzzy gains access to all of Suplex Kirby's moves. In addition, he has a unique hover involving his wings, which propel him in a similar manner to the Beetle ability and allow him to cut ropes and foliage by flying through them. Lastly, he gains access to the Friend Throw ability, allowing him to toss his buddies to attack enemies and clear away heavy obstacles.

“ | Allow me to introduce our swords-model extraordinaire! The big beetle--Bugzzy! | ” | — N.M.E. Sales Guy, in the episode Kirby's Duel Role |
In Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, Bugzzy appears in episode 3, Kirby's Duel Role, as a monster ordered by King Dedede. Unlike the games, he towers over Kirby and attacks with hand-held weapons--first with a large sword and a notched club, then later on with two swords even greater in size. After battling with Bugzzy, Kirby defeats him by inhaling one of his swords to gain the Sword ability, then slicing him in two down the middle using Sword Beam.
In the Kirby novel series
In the Kirby novel series, Bugzzy appears in Kirby: Uproar at the Kirby Café?!. After Kirby inhales Hornhead and gets the Beetle copy ability, Bugzzy, the leader of the insects comes to and is asked by the Beetleys to help against him. Bugzzy is mad that Kirby and King Dedede came to take the Green Spider Grass and rushes towards Kirby. Kirby avoids him and Bugzzy rams into a crate, blowing Dedede away in the process. King Dedede tries to fight him by swinging a piece of crate at him, but Bugzzy dodges. Bugzzy grabs Dedede's body to lift and slams him to the floor. Kirby attacks Bugzzy with the Beetle copy ability and flings him into the air. Kirby catches him with his horn and drops him, winning the fight. When Bugzzy regains his consciousness, he admires Kirby's strength. Kirby tells him why they need the Green Spider Grass. Bugzzy tells them about the insect who bit Dedede, apologizes and gives them the Green Spider Grass.

"This enemy is a huge wrestling fan—he'll do his best to try out some wrestling moves on his enemies. If Kirby manages to avoid his attacks and swallow him, Kirby can bust out some wrestling moves too. Bugzzy can also release ladybugs to attack, but I think that's against wrestling rules..." | "This enemy is really into wresting. In fact, he's just dying to give Kirby a hands-on demonstration of his suplex skills. Sometimes he releases ladybirds into battle, but...surely that sort of thing's against the rules in wrestling. If Kirby manages to inhale this hostile beastie, he'll be able to pull off some nifty wrestling moves, too!" |
