— Nago in the Kirby's Dream Land 3 Instructional Booklet

Nago is one of Kirby's Animal Friends, debuting in Kirby's Dream Land 3, which remains his only major game appearance to date. He is a large cat-like creature with a similar body shape as Rick, but with a pair of short legs instead of the hamster's big, round feet. His feet are not normally visible unless he is moving. Although his fur is mostly white, he possesses orange and brown markings on the top of his head and on his back, as well as brown ears and a stubby, orange tail. This gives him a resemblance to a Japanese Bobtail with a calico coat, though calicos are primarily female.

Kirby's Dream Land 3[edit]

KDL3 Nago Sprite.png In Kirby's Dream Land 3, Nago is one of the first Animal Friends to be seen, appearing in the first stage of Grass Land next to Rick. He is also seen in the Cloudy Park intro, where he plays with Kirby until leaving him behind in favor of Pitch, and the Iceberg intro, where he assists Kirby and ChuChu in building a snowman.

When Kirby and Nago are traveling together, the pink hero assumes the shape of a ball while the cat holds him in his paws, rolling him around. Apart from being able to defeat most enemies by jumping on them, he may perform double or even triple jumps if the B button is pressed while he is falling, allowing him to make higher and longer leaps.

As with the other Animal Friends in the game, teaming up with Nago transforms Kirby's current Copy Ability into a new one, combining the animal's skills with the ability's attributes.

His girlfriend Shiro, also a cat, appears in Stage 5 of Iceberg, and bringing Nago to his girlfriend rewards Kirby a Heart Star. Note that Nago cannot be found in this stage so Kirby has to bring Nago from another stage.

Combinations[edit]

Base Ability Appearance Description
Burning KDL3 Nago Burning sprite.png Kirby spits out a thin, tall flame that travels along the ground in a straight line, growing and then shrinking again until it disappears. Touching an enemy extinguishes it, but destroys the foe.
Clean KDL3 Nago Cleaning sprite.png Nago charges forwards while the Y button is held, sweeping the floor with Kirby and eliminating opponents in his path.
Cutter KDL3 Nago Cutter sprite.png Nago swings Kirby upwards very quickly, creating a crescent-shaped blast of energy that flies diagonally into the sky, defeating enemies in its path.
Ice KDL3 Nago Ice sprite.png While the Y button is held, Kirby breathes snowballs that may freeze enemies downwards, slowly propelling Nago and himself into the air in the process.
Needle KDL3 Nago Needle sprite.png Kirby rapidly launches harmful pink spikes forward from his face as long as the Y button is held, but cannot move while doing so.
Parasol KDL3 Nago Parasol sprite.png Kirby and Nago use a parasol as a pogo stick, bouncing around on it and defeated adversaries while the Y button is held.
Spark KDL3 Nago Spark sprite.png Nago rubs Kirby as long as the Y button is held, creating static electricity around him. Every enemy he touches while charged up is destroyed, but neutralizes some electricity. The longer Kirby is rubbed, the more foes he can defeat before returning to normal, up to a maximum of eight. The electricity will discharge over time.
Stone KDL3 Nago Stone sprite.png Pressing and holding the Y button causes Kirby to change into his stone form while Nago pounds the ground with him, harming opponents in front of him. Nago cannot move while using this ability, and if used in the air, they will enter free-fall until reaching the ground.

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards[edit]

K64Nago.png
The Nago statue from The Crystal Shards.

Nago makes a cameo appearance in The Crystal Shards, although he himself is never seen. Instead, by using the Stone-Cutter ability combo, Kirby may transform into a moving statue of any of his Animal Friends from Kirby's Dream Land 3, including Nago. While in this form, he is very slow, but may execute double and triple jumps like Nago does in his original appearance, as well as crush most enemies he touches as with the regular Stone ability.

Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]

Nago appears as a sticker in Kirby: Planet Robobot.

Kirby Star Allies[edit]

Nago appears briefly as part of the Cleaning moveset in Kirby Star Allies when the Clean Nago attack is utilized.

Kirby's Dream Buffet[edit]

In Kirby's Dream Buffet, Nago appears on a Character Treat, using his artwork from Kirby's Dream Land 3.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]

In Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Nago's likeness appears as a Dress-Up Mask, unlocked by completing card #12 in the Stamp Rally. When wearing said mask, the wearer's voice is replaced with Nago's meowing sounds from Kirby Star Allies.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]

Nago appears as a ★ primary grab-type spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. His level 1 stats are 499 attack and 451 defense, while his level 99 stats are 2,495 attack and 2,257 defense. He possesses 2 support slots. He can be obtained either by battling him in World of Light, Spirit Board, or by purchasing him from the shop.

In Kirby: Right Back at Ya![edit]

According to an unused animator sheet, Nago was originally going to appear in the anime series Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, but the idea ended up being scrapped. However, the character of Chef Nagoya bears some resemblance to Nago.

Trivia[edit]

  • Nago is the only one of the six Animal Friends who does not appear in the Celebration Picture "A Dream Above The Clouds".
  • Nago’s voice in Kirby Star Allies and onward is sampled from Tom, Shinya Kumazaki’s deceased pet cat, who also voiced Star Dream.[1]
