Fossil Fools - Part I is the 75th episode of the Kirby: Right Back at Ya! series. In this episode, a tyrannosaurus fossil is discovered in Dream Land, which gets everybody in the kingdom interested in dinosaurs; particularly King Dedede. After looking through several picture books of dinosaurs, King Dedede becomes obsessed with finding live ones, but is told that they had all gone extinct. Refusing to accept this, he contacts Night Mare Enterprises to give him dinosaur monsters, but instead they send him a mad scientist named Doctor Moro who tricks Tiff and her friends to help him re-create dinosaurs using genetic engineering. Once the dinosaur eggs are secured, King Dedede and Escargoon host a dinosaur theme park in Babagahara and invite many of the townsfolk on a boat ride through the jungle, where they encounter a giant carnivorous dinosaur that resembles King Dedede. The episode ends on a cliffhanger here as the dinosaur attacks, which is followed up on in the next episode: Fossil Fools - Part II.

This episode and the next are heavily based off of the science fiction film Jurassic Park and the H.G. Wells story The Island of Doctor Moreau.

Plot synopsis[edit]

King Dedede becomes obsessed with reading (albeit using picture books) for the first time in his life.

The episode begins out in the Dream Land countryside, where Tiff is reading a book about dinosaurs to Kirby, Tuff, and the Cappy children, who have never heard of dinosaurs before. As they do this, Tokkori flies by and mocks the notion that dinosaurs once roamed in Dream Land, and carelessly crashes into a cliff face. Kirby pulls Tokkori out of the dirt, but in the process causes the cliff to collapse and reveal a fossilized foot of a giant dinosaur. Later on, many Cappies from the village gather as formal excavations begin in the area to discover more fossils, led by Professor Curio. As he and the kids dig, they uncover more pieces of the skeleton, and try to reassemble it; assuming it to be similar to a tyrannosaurus. Shortly into this process, King Dedede and Escargoon arrive in the Royal Racecar to find out what the Cappies are gathered for. King Dedede then decides to join in the excavation, and - due to extraordinary luck - manages to find the remaining pieces of the skeleton after collapsing the cliff further.

Later on, King Dedede becomes more interested in dinosaurs and starts perusing his castle library for more information. After going through several books, King Dedede dreams of riding a fire-breathing tyrannosaurus and battling other dinosaurs. The next day, he insists on going on an expedition to find more dinosaurs, but Escargoon points out that they are all extinct, and has Dedede confirm this with Tiff. Still not satisfied, Dedede then runs over to Professor Curio's shop and antagonizes the poor man, but Curio also affirms that all the dinosaurs went extinct. Saddened by this news, King Dedede runs crying out of the shop, insisting that there must be some dinosaurs left. He tries to convince people by mentioning the Loch Ness Monster on Channel DDD, and promoting a book called "Dinosaur is Alive" that does not end up selling any copies. Later on, he tries to fool the Cappies by using a Waddle Dee-powered crane to pound giant "footprints" into the ground, but they catch him in the act, and Dedede finally loses his temper.

Doctor Moro approaches the excavation team to recruit his assistants.

King Dedede calls up Night Mare Enterprises and asks them to send him a dinosaur monster, but the N.M.E. Sales Guy insists they cannot do that. Instead, he sends them an expert geneticist named Doctor Moro who offers to "make" a dinosaur for them in exchange for funds to build a research facility and a capable assistant to help him in this task. After failing to qualify to be assistants themselves, King Dedede and Escargoon rope in Tiff and her friends for the job. Meanwhile, Tiff herself is trying to get the Cappy kids to stay enthusiastic about the excavation, but they grow bored and leave, since they would rather see a living dinosaur. At that moment, Doctor Moro introduces himself to the remaining excavation group and leads them to his new laboratory deep in the Babagahara jungle. There, he explains that he aims to modify the DNA of existing lizards to transform them into dinosaurs, and requests that Tiff aid him in this task. After already being impressed by the laboratory, and seeing Moro deride King Dedede and Escargoon as "bumbling fools", Tiff earnestly accepts the proposition on the condition that nothing is harmed in the process.

The tour boat is attacked by a Dedede-like tyrannosaur.

To help with the experiments, Tuff and Kirby go hunting for lizards in the forest and catch some. Meanwhile, Professor Curio and Tiff help set up the equipment in the laboratory and monitor the zygotes they injected with the modified DNA. As King Dedede and Escargoon watch from their monitor at Castle Dedede, the research team manages to successfully produce dinosaur eggs, which Doctor Moro explains will be ready to hatch very soon. As the research team spends the night sleeping at the laboratory, a loud crash startles them awake, and they run back into the main research room to discover that all of the eggs are missing. The next day, Escargoon and King Dedede promote a new dinosaur-themed attraction on Channel DDD called "Dino Kingdom", and insist that there are real dinosaurs there. Despite initial doubts, most of Cappy Town comes to the park, the entrance of which is situated on the edge of Babagahara. There, Tiff and the research team tell Chief Bookem and Mayor Len what happened in the laboratory, explaining that Doctor Moro disappeared along with the eggs, but they have little to offer in return.

King Dedede and Escargoon then direct everyone to the main attraction of the park, telling them to hop into boats on the river and go for a ride. Tiff, Tuff, and Curio complain to Dedede about having their research stolen, but they hop into the boat anyway with Kirby and several of the Cappies. After passing through a gate into the park proper, King Dedede and Escargoon act as tour guides to the assembled group, and murmur to each-other about whether or not Doctor Moro pulled through. After getting far enough in, King Dedede stops the boat and pulls out a cage containing several sheep stolen from Mayor Len's villa, intent on using it to bait out the dinosaurs. At that moment, a giant blue dinosaur appears and gobbles up the sheep. It then reveals itself, having a face and hat resembling that of King Dedede. The episode ends on a cliffhanger as the dinosaur proceeds to chase after the boat, intent on gobbling up everyone inside. The story proceeds from here in Fossil Fools - Part II.

Differences between versions[edit]

  • In the Japanese version, many objects (such as the covers of books) have text on them that is not present in the 4Kids dub.

Dialogue differences[edit]

  • In the Japanese version, Kirby calls out (translated) "Dinosaur!" when he captures the lizard near the beginning of the episode. Later on, he also repeats the other characters when they are all startled awake as the eggs are stolen.
  • In the Japanese version, King Dedede accuses Professor Curio of "letting the dinosaurs go extinct" and threatens the death penalty on him for this.
  • In the Japanese version, the caption in the "Dinosaur is Alive" book has King Dedede claiming that dinosaurs must be real because he saw them in a dream.
  • In the Japanese version, Doctor Moro's last two test questions are different, asking "The dumbest person alive is...?" and "The second-dumbest?". King Dedede and Doctor Escargon answer with "His Majesty Dedede" and "Escargon", respectively.

Trivia[edit]

  • When Doctor Moro introduces himself to Tiff and the others, he claims that his laboratory is at Castle Dedede, when it is actually deep in the Babagahara woods. This appears to be a mistake on part of the 4Kids dub, as the Japanese version does not state the laboratory to be at Castle Dedede.
  • On the display screen in Doctor Moro's laboratory, after showing a lizard morphing into a tyrannosaurus, it proceeds to cycle through several other animals, including Nruff, a sparrow, the monkey from War of the Woods, and the cobra from Flower Power (though the cobra is green rather than yellow).
  • This is the first two-part episode which does not feature narration in the 4Kids version.
  • In Biblio's book store, a poster depicting Pappy Pottey and two other Cappy-like characters can be seen behind Biblio.
