- This article is about Zan Partizanne on her own. For all three sisters, see The Three Mage-Sisters.
“ | But I am afraid your unwanted wanderings end here. By the will of our beloved liege, Lord Hyness, Officiant of Doom... I shall destroy you here and now! | ” | — Zan Partizanne in Kirby Star Allies |
Zan Partizanne is a boss who made her debut in Kirby Star Allies. She is described as the Lightning General of The Three Mage-Sisters (the other two being Francisca and Flamberge). She is also the highest-ranking general of the trio, taking orders directly from Hyness, the main antagonist of the game. Like the other two sisters, Zan Partizanne's name is based on the name of the polearm she carries.
As her title implies, Zan Partizanne uses electricity in battle, conducted through her polearm when she swings at the Star Allies, as well as a giant set of drums she straps onto her back, which are modeled after the drums worn by the Japanese God of Thunder Raijin. She gained these powers when she was about to succumb to a deadly thunderstorm, but was rescued by Hyness. Since then, she has been eternally loyal to him, despite his worsening treatment of her up to the events of Kirby Star Allies.

Kirby Star Allies[edit]
Zan Partizanne first appeared alongside her fellow mage-sisters in Kirby Star Allies. She is first faced in battle at the end of Heavenly Hall in Fortress of Shadows - Jambastion. Once defeated, she destroys the core of the fortress, prompting the Star Allies to escape before it collapses, making her the second boss in the Kirby series who forces an escape sequence after being defeated (the first one being Meta Knight in Revenge of Meta Knight). Zan Partizanne is faced again at The Divine Terminus, just before the battle with Hyness.
Attacks[edit]

“ | The dutiful leader of the three Jambastion mages, Lightning General Zan Partizanne seems to energize the fortress itself and uses high-speed attacks to render her prey helpless. At the bidding of some unknown power, she hunts for dark hearts… | ” | — Pause flavor text of Zan Partizanne (1st battle in Heavenly Hall) in Story Mode and Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go! |
The following tables list all of Zan Partizanne's attacks as a boss in Kirby Star Allies. Attacks in italics are used during the second phase only.
Zan Partizanne's Attacks during the first battle in Kirby Star Allies | |
---|---|
Attack | Description |
ザン・ザン Zan Zlash |
Zan Partizanne slashes with her spear. The slash reach is short compared to her thrusting attacks. Most often she slashes twice in a row but can do it only once, too. If she does two sets, she may turn around at the start of her second set if her target is behind her.
|
ザン・サザン Zan Ztab |
Zan Partizanne jumps and thrusts down her spear, creating an electric barrier and Drop Stars around her on impact. Sometimes she may do this move twice in a row. Inhaling the drop stars will grant either the Plasma or Beam abilities depending on color. |
ザン・サウザンド Zan Zkewers |
Zan Partizanne rapidly thrusts her spear while dashing, finishing with a forceful thrust. She may turn around upon performing the final thrust. |
カミナリオコシ Drum N Waste |
Zan Partizanne conjures a kit of three drums that resemble the ones wielded by Raijin, the Japanese god of lightning.
As long as her drums are not destroyed, she fires parabolic electric blasts from the drums for five rounds, leaving stars on impact:
Under her is the safety zone where the electric blasts can't hit Kirby and his allies.
|
ライトニングレモネイド Lightning Lemonade |
Zan Partizanne points up her spear to summon a thundercloud above her. She drops a lightning bolt from the cloud on her both sides for 3 rounds, leaving stars on impact. She attacks on:
The middle under her is the safety zone where the lightning bolts on her both sides can't hit Kirby & his allies. |
Electro Eclair |
Zan Partizanne conjures her Raijin drums in order to use this attack, similar to 'Drum N Waste'. As long as her drums are not destroyed, she uses her drums as a bow and shoot her spear horizontally like an arrow.
|
Attack names are taken from Japanese guide books and the English version's Dream Friend moveset list. |
In between attacks, Zan Partizanne moves via Lightning Dodge to get into position for her next attack. For Drum N Waste and Electro Eclair, she moves to the center of the battlefield, while for all the others she moves to one side of the screen (left or right) before executing the move. The only exception to this pattern is if she does two sets of Zan Zlashes in a row.
In all of her battles, Zan Partizanne can be stunned while she is performing Drum N Waste and Electro Eclair if she is hit by attacks with the Splash Power Effect (or by Artist and Adeleine's paintbrush attacks).

“ | Zan Partizanne swore an oath of loyalty to Hyness—even though he has yet to remember her overly long name! Her respect for Hyness never falters, thanks to his intoxicating charisma and her deep sense of duty (and despite his poor treatment of her). | ” | — Pause flavor text of Zan Partizanne (2nd battle in The Divine Terminus) in Story Mode and Guest Star ???? When she is fought again at The Divine Terminus, Zan Partizanne's attacks are more elaborate, but still fundamentally the same.

As an ally[edit]

In Version 4.0.0. of the game, Zan Partizanne was added alongside her sisters Flamberge and Francisca as playable Dream Friends, unlockable after completing Heroes in Another Dimension with at least 100 Friend Hearts. The three can swap out for each-other at almost any time. Zan Partizanne has access to most of her moves as a boss, and can hover through the air.

Super Kirby Clash[edit]
In Super Kirby Clash, Zan Partizanne appears in the Castle Village after Team Kirby clears the "Super: The True Final Battle" Story Quest. She can be found sitting alone on the bench at the right end of the village.
Zan Partizanne also appears as a purchasable sticker. Her sticker comes with the caption "Purge them!"
Kirby Fighters 2[edit]
In Kirby Fighters 2, Zan Partizanne appears alongside her sisters on the Jambastion Entrance Battle Stage, where they act as stage hazards. Neither Zan or her sisters can be attacked by the fighters, and they use some of their boss attacks from Kirby Star Allies to break up the action.
In addition, a costume for Staff Kirby can be unlocked which resembles Zan Partizanne, available if the player has save data for Kirby Star Allies on their Nintendo Switch.
Kirby's Dream Buffet[edit]
In Kirby's Dream Buffet, Zan Partizanne is represented by a costume and color for Kirby to use. She also appears as a Character Treat, depicting her artwork from Kirby Star Allies.
Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]
In Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, a Dress-Up Mask of Zan Partizanne is available to wear upon completing card #17 of the Stamp Rally. By completing 90 missions in Merry Magoland, a statue featuring the Three Mage-Sisters will appear in the park, in addition to unlocking a mask based on Retaliator Zan Partizanne from Heroes in Another Dimension.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Zan Partizanne appears as a Spirit alongside Francisca and Flamberge. More information can be found on The Three Mage-Sisters page.
Music[edit]
Zan Partizanne's battle theme is titled 忘らるる閃光のライトニング[2] (Forgotten/Forgotizanne Flash of Lightning). The title is a reference to how her name is often forgotten, and a pun on her Japanese name: "Parurutizānu" → "Wasuraruru" (forgotten).
It's an intense rock version of "Song of Supplication", the battle theme of Francisca and Flamberge.
Name[edit]
Zan Partizanne's name differs from the names of the other two Mage Sisters in both the English and Japanese versions. In English, the two have a single word name that starts with F, and are named after a weapon with no modifications, while in Japanese, both start with フラン (that can be read as both "Fran" or "Flam") and are followed by a word. Due to this, prior to her name reveal, fans speculated that her name would follow the same patterns in the respective languages. Once her real name was announced, it came as a bit of a surprise. Series director Shinya Kumazaki named her differently on purpose, to surprise the players, make them feel as if she had a different origin from the other two, and make her unique with a really long name.[3]
Zan Partizanne's unwieldy name has also become a running joke on the Kirby JP Twitter. When she presents news on the official Twitter, she often reminds the readers to remember her name.
“ | 名は「ザン・パルルティザーヌ」だ。この名、忘れるでないぞ。
My name is Zan Partizanne. Don't forget it. |
” | — When she first appeared on the official Twitter.[4] |
“ | ジャマハローア。私だ、もう名前は覚えたな?
Bonjam. It's me. You have remembered my name, right? |
” | — When she introduced the newly added Celebration Picture in Star Allies Version 2.0.0.[5] |
“ | ジャマハローア。私だ。ザン…もう名乗らなくても覚えているな!
Bonjam. It's me, Zan... I shouldn't have to tell you! You should remember! |
” | — When she introduced the HD Rumble feature in Star Allies.[6] |
Additionally, Zan Partizanne is an admirer of Hyness, but the robed sorcerer does not reciprocate her feelings. In particular, Hyness routinely forgets her name, which is referenced in his phase 2 boss fight pause description in The Ultimate Choice.
Nicknames to other characters[edit]
Zan Partizanne has a habit of giving other characters nicknames. For example, she refers to her sisters lovingly as "Franny" (キッス Kiss in Japanese) and "Berge" (ルージュ Rouge in Japanese), while she refers to Kirby by varying derogatory nicknames like "tiny ball of pink puffy mischief" and "stubby pink ball" (ずんぐりピンク Stubby Pink in Japanese). She eventually refers to Kirby properly by name at the end of Heroes in Another Dimension, indicating that she now takes him seriously. More of these nicknames can be seen by her reports on the Kirby JP Twitter feed, including:
- Marx - たまのりピエロ (Ball-Balancing Clown)
- Gooey - 驚きのあいつ (Astonishing Lad)
- Daroach - 化けネズミ (Changed Mouse, a play on the bakeneko or "changed cat")
- Dark Meta Knight - ちょいワル仮面 (Little Bad Mask)
- Adeleine - でこっぱちアーティスト (Big-Forehead Artist)
- Ribbon - チビッコ妖精 (Rugrat Fairy)
- Magolor - イカサマたまご (Crafty Egg, as translated in English by CPU nickname in Kirby's Dream Buffet). In return, he calls her パルメザンチーズ (Parmesan Cheese).
- Taranza - インテリ坊ちゃん刈り (Bowlcut Intellectual)
- Susie - スイーツOL (Sweet-tooth Office Lady)
- Susie's Business Suit - メタル回転コマ (Metal Spinning Top)
- Shadow Kirby - ずんぐりグレー (Stubby Gray)
- Prince Fluff - ふとまゆプリンス (Big-Eyebrows Prince)
- Void Termina - モフモフゴッド様 (O Fluffy God)
- King Dedede - くちびるペンギン (Mouthy Penguin)
Trivia[edit]
- Zan Partizanne is the only one of The Three Mage-Sisters to have her own boss battle theme, albeit just being an arrangement of Francisca and Flamberge's battle theme.
- Barring text used in Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go!, Zan Partizanne's Dream Friend pause screen description is the only one to not mention the title of her game of origin.
