The Empty Nest Mess is the 23rd (21st in the 4Kids broadcast) episode of the Kirby: Right Back at Ya! series. In this episode, King Dedede and Escargoon develop an insta-monster mixture which they intend to use to transform Dyna Blade's chick into a monster to attack Kirby, and attempt to kidnap the chick, causing commotion in Dream Land as its mother searches the countryside. Kirby and Tokkori find the chick, but are unable to coax it into returning to its nest, and after causing a stir in Cappy Town and having a close call down a river, the chick is re-captured by King Dedede and taken to the castle to be injected with the formula. With Dyna Blade on Kirby's heels - thinking him to have done something with her chick again - Kirby manages to fly on his Warp Star to reach the castle just before the injection can take place, causing Dyna Blade to discover her chick and punish King Dedede and Escargoon for their actions.

This episode marks the first time a monster was shown which had no direct role in the storyline; namely the Green Caterpillar Monster at the beginning.

Plot synopsis[edit]

King Dedede and Escargoon fumble their attempt to kidnap Dyna Chick for use in their monster-making experiment.

The episode begins at Castle Dedede, where Escargoon is showing King Dedede a new invention of his, dubbed 'Operation Big-Shot': a device which injects ordinary creatures with a chemical mixture that transforms them rapidly into giant monsters. Escargoon demonstrates the elixir by using a small injection on a caterpillar to turn it into a massive beast, and King Dedede gloats that now he won't need to order monsters from Night Mare Enterprises. Later on, Dyna Blade causes a stir around Dream Land, prompting the citizens of Cappy Town to wonder if something has happened to her chick. Kirby and Tokkori investigate the situation by traveling to Dyna Blade's Nest, and find that the chick is missing. Kirby then hears the cries of the chick from down below as King Dedede and Escargoon are abducting it using their Armored Vehicle, but they end up dropping the chick down the cliff and Kirby finds it, but Tokkori inadvertently scares the chick and it runs away.

As King Dedede and Escargoon recount their initial failed attempt to apprehend the chick, it finds its way down to Cappy Town and ignores Kirby and Tokkori to have a look around, causing a stir among the Cappies it runs across. Tiff and Tuff soon notice the bird and join Kirby and Tokkori in their chase to get it back home. Soon, more residents of Cappy Town join the group to chase down the runaway bird as it causes more trouble in Cappy Town. Eventually, the chick stops in Curio's museum to cuddle with the left-over feather from its mother, allowing the group to close in on it. At that moment, King Dedede and Escargoon find them, and try to convince the town to hand the chick over to them, lying that they will return it to the nest. Tiff and Tuff call them out for this, prompting them to retreat for the moment. Tiff and Tuff then set off to try and return the chick to the nest with Kirby and Tokkori.

Dyna Chick runs through Professor Curio's museum.

As Dyna Blade continues searching for her chick, King Dedede and Escargoon make plans to ambush the kids to take the chick for themselves. As the chick stops at a riverside for water, it gets caught in a net by King Dedede, but as they gloat, the chick manages to jump out of the net and falls into the river. In an effort to rescue the chick before it goes over the waterfall, Tiff calls the Warp Star for Kirby to use. As Kirby closes in, however, Dyna Blade goes after him, thinking him to be responsible for her chick's loss again. Dyna Blade unwittingly prevents Kirby from saving the chick, and it goes over the falls, but thankfully it had a log to hold onto and was uninjured. As the chick and Tokkori continue down the river, King Dedede catches up again and catches the chick, throwing it into the container and driving off to the castle.

Dyna Blade apprehends the kidnappers of her chick.

As Kirby continues to avoid Dyna Blade's attacks, Tokkori manages to catch up with him during a fall and tells him to head to the castle to retrieve the chick, which he promptly does. At the castle, King Dedede and Escargoon prepare to use their insta-monster mix to transform the chick into a beast. With Dyna Blade still hot on his heels, Kirby flies to the castle, where Fololo & Falala and Meta Knight direct him to the throne room. Kirby soon flies in and Dyna Blade follows, landing in front of the culprits as Tokkori tells her the scoop. Dyna Blade proceeds to pin King Dedede and Escargoon down, knock the injecting device away, and retrieve her chick, flying off with it. As the episode ends, Dyna Blade drops King Dedede and Escargoon from a great height as punishment, and Kirby and friends watch the birds return home from the castle deck.

Dialogue differences between versions[edit]

  • In the Japanese version, Dr. Escargon threatens the Cappies with the death penalty if Dyna Blade's chick is not returned to its nest, though this is a misleading threat.
  • In the Japanese version, there is no mention of a waterfall on the river at any point, though a relatively minor fall is seen at one point.
  • In the Japanese version, Tokkori compliments himself at the end of the episode, instead of commenting on Kirby.

Trivia[edit]

  • The scene where Dyna Chick discovers Cappy Town somewhat mirrors Kirby's first impression of the town in Episode 1: Kirby Comes to Cappy Town.
  • During the scene where Dyna Blade's chick runs through Professor Curio's vase, the hair on the back of Curio's head briefly detaches while he is shocked. It is unclear if this is an animation error or a deliberate exaggeration.
