The Ultimate Choice is a Boss Endurance Sub-Game present in Kirby Star Allies, where selected characters defeat a series of bosses, similar to The Arena. It is unlocked after Story Mode along with Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go! and Heroes in Another Dimension. It has two major differences compared to The Arena which are having a scoring system and difficulty levels. As such, it can be seen as effectively nine different Arenas rolled into a single game. Completing this mode on the Soul Melter difficulty setting is required for 100% completion of Kirby Star Allies. Completing Soul Melter EX is required to 'crown' the save file.

Much like its counterparts in previous titles, The Ultimate Choice is a boss endurance mode with rest areas in-between each fight. Bosses and enemy ambushes are encountered in a set order depending on the difficulty chosen. The Ultimate Choice also features a character select screen much like Helper to Hero in Kirby Super Star Ultra, and keeps separate scores for each one. The player can choose between Kirby and most of his Copy Abilities, any of the recruitable allies, or any of the currently available Dream Friends to play as. CPU or human-controlled allies can also join the player for a team of up to four, with their individual damage output reduced to prevent bosses from going down too quickly.

Gameplay[edit]

The Ultimate Choice is split up into 9 difficulty levels (represented as spiciness levels). Only the first five are available at first, with the other four unlocked after meeting certain criteria. A high score is kept for this mode, with higher scores being awarded for higher difficulties.

Before starting the game, the player must choose how many human players will play:

  • 1 human player is in Solo Rank category;
  • 2-4 human players are in With Friends Rank category.

The more players in play (including CPU), the less damage they will deal to mid-bosses and bosses. The Ultimate Choice has a different set of multiplayer modifiers from main modes (Story Mode, Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go!, and Heroes in Another Dimension).

Attack Modifiers
Number of Players The Ultimate Choice Main Modes
1 ×1.0 ×1.0
2 ×0.875 ×0.75
3 ×0.8 ×0.6
4 ×0.75 ×0.5

Then, 1P chooses a Copy Ability for Kirby, or presses X (or the up button when the Joy-Con is held sideways) to choose the Friend of that ability, and (if desired) chooses up to 3 Friends to accompany 1P's character through the whole run. After completing The Ultimate Choice once, Dream Friends are available for any player to choose from, along with regular helpers and Kirby for 1P only.

After character select, 1P chooses the difficulty level. Most bosses have fixed stamina regardless of difficulty.

During boss battles, 2P, 3P 4P, and CPUs (if any) cannot be permanently defeated, Unfriended, or swallowed for their ability (if any). Fainted allies who are still in the stage will revive with minimal health if left unconscious at the end of a battle (or if thrown off the stage while the boss is shifting phases). If fainted allies are not revived in time and disappear midbattle, they will revive with half health in the rest area. In a multiplayer run, if 1P is KO'd, other players must revive 1P before the given time runs out; otherwise, the game is over when 1P is done in.

In-between battles, characters can use a limited supply of food for healing if needed, and can also pick up Picture Pieces from chests. On higher difficulties, more pieces can be collected, but there will be less food for healing. Before the final round, an additional food item can be found inside the last chest.

amiibo can be used to obtain extra food in this mode (up to 7 times in a single playthrough), but doing so will mark the score as having been achieved using amiibo. Characters who have completed the sub-game are crowned on the character select menu (yellow crown for Difficulty 1-7; red crown for Soul Melter; green crown for Soul Melter EX). If every character has completed the sub-game (regardless of difficulty), a special message will pop up to congratulate the achievement.

Difficulty[edit]

As of Version 4.0.0, the game has nine difficulty levels: the first five available at start and the last four unlockable. Difficulty levels are represented visually using a plate of Superspicy Curry at varying levels of spiciness.

Version 4.0.0 adds Soul Melter EX, which is unlocked by clearing both Soul Melter and Heroes in Another Dimension. To select Soul Melter EX, the player should select Soul Melter and press ↑, A, and - together (the same command for Kirby's Dream Land - Extra Game). Soul Melter EX incorporates the bosses from Heroes in Another Dimension. Completing Soul Melter EX unlocks the Dream Button which the player can switch Kirby's look between the starting current modern look or the classic look in the game Kirby first appeared in.

The following lists every difficulty in The Ultimate Choice, with information on the boss battles, how many healing items are given, and other factors:

The Ultimate Choice's icon from the main menu turns red when Fiery Showdown and Infernal Crisis are unlocked, and then turns dark red when Soul Melter is unlocked.

Player Health[edit]

The maximum health of all players varies between difficulty levels:

  • 1-4 (Sweet Breeze - Spicy Adventure): 100%
  • 5-7 (Sizzling Threat - Infernal Crisis): 80%
  • Secret (Soul Melter): 60%
  • Secret (Soul Melter EX): 100%

Friends have the same power as Kirby's respective Copy Abilities. In addition, they usually have better jumping/hovering ability than Kirby's hover. However, most of them have lower health than Kirby.

Scoring[edit]

In each difficulty mode, a score is kept. This score is based on the defeated boss phases (score varies in difficulty) and time bonuses (how quickly Kirby and his allies defeat bosses). The score decreases by 1000 every time 1P is KO'd in the multiplayer mode, however.

The lowest attainable score is 11500 on Sweet Breeze difficulty in multiplayer mode: 1500 from defeating Meta Knight's second phase and 10000 from Sweet Breeze Clear Bonus; 1P has to be KO'd multiple times until the score is depleted to zero before defeating Meta Knight's first phase; at least 5 minutes must be spent before finishing off Meta Knight so that the time bonus runs out.

Time Bonus[edit]

Time bonus = base value1 - (defeat time2 × 10)

1 The base value is 3000, except for the following bosses:

  • Void Termina (Infernal Crisis) - 5000
  • Void Termina & Void Soul (Soul Melter) - 7000
  • Void Termina - True Destroyer of Worlds & Void (Soul Melter EX) - 70000

2 Unit: second; rounded down to one decimal place.

For most bosses, the boss defeated points are awarded before the time bonus points are. However, whenever King Dedede and Parallel Dedede are defeated, the time bonus points are awarded first before the boss defeated points are.

Differences from Main Modes[edit]

  • If a specific copy ability is selected for Kirby to use at the start of the game, he will be locked into that ability, and be unable to lose it for the duration of the game. This does not apply if Normal Kirby is chosen.
    • Because of this, Hammer Kirby can use Hammer Throw infinitely without losing the ability, and Artist Kirby cannot use Painbrush, unless Normal Kirby gains either ability by inhaling the respective Bonkers or Vividria mid-bosses.
    • The Cook, Crash, Festival, Mike and Sleep abilities are unavailable for Kirby to choose on the menu, and subsequently Chef Kawasaki is the only playable character of the Cook ability. Normal Kirby can still obtain the Festival ability from the golden cherries of Yggy Woods, and the Cook ability from the Chef Kawasaki mid-boss.
  • Normal Kirby's Blaster Bullet (a Star Bullet formed by inhaling at least 2 objects) does increased damage in Soul Melter EX (and Heroes in Another Dimension) compared to regular modes.
  • To prevent overuse, in the rest area, Chef Kawasaki's Cook Pot / Souper Supper, Artist's Still Life / Adeleine & Ribbon's Al Fresco, and The Three Mage-Sisters's Sister Circle do nothing, and their cooldown timer freezes.
    • Chef Kawasaki's cooldown time is increased from 60 seconds in main modes to 150 seconds in The Ultimate Choice.
    • The Three Mage-Sisters' Sister Circle does more damage with more allies. (In other modes, it does fixed damage regardless of the number of allies.)
  • Bosses in The Ultimate Choice have 75% health compared to their appearances in Story Mode, Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go! and Heroes in Another Dimension.
  • Grand Mam is not fought in any difficulty. This is due to the fact that Grand Mam must be defeated with at least two Copy Abilities: Fire and a slash-property ability (e.g. Cutter, Ninja, Sword).
  • The Star Allies Sparkler can be piloted by any number of players.

Music[edit]

Title Track[edit]

The title track of The Ultimate Choice is composed by Yuuta Ogasawara and titled お好み究極チョイス味[1] (What-You-Like Ultimate Choice Flavor). It can be found and listened to as Track 198 in the Jukebox.

This track is a remix of "Green Greens" in a heavy metal and oriental fashion, to express the theme of spiciness (the difficulty levels).

Legacy Tracks[edit]

Several classic tunes from previous Kirby games appear in the Ultimate Choice, many of them only in Soul Melter (EX).

In Soul Melter (EX), Morpho Knight's theme will be replaced by new music arrangements when 1P is a Dream Friend that has completed Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go! at least once. The background of The Divine Terminus will always change depending on which Dream Friend is used in Soul Melter.

Version changelog[edit]

The following are small changes made to the game in newer versions:

4.0.0[edit]

  • The timer has slightly changed. Now it doesn't run when the boss hasn't entered the battle, e.g. when King Dedede is eating, and when Meta Knight is on the cliff.
  • Void Soul's attack order has changed.

Trivia[edit]

  • On the title screen, red chilli peppers are falling down in the background. On occasion, a green chilli pepper may fall down as well.
  • The difficulty scale used in this game is similar to the Intensity meters present in Kid Icarus: Uprising and Classic Mode in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
  • The face Kirby makes when Soul Melter is selected is a reference to Devil Kirby from Kirby: Right Back at Ya! episode Frog Wild, which he becomes after being possessed by a monster called the Demon Frog.
  • The face Kirby makes when Soul Melter EX is selected is similar to that of Void Termina's Final Core / Void Soul. He also adds four bottles of hot sauce instead of one.
    • It also resembles a numb expression, meaning Kirby is stunned by the difficulty.
  • Nintendo Switch Kirby Star Allies Channel Article #22 mentions that the score can reach 700,000 if Soul Melter EX is cleared fast enough. To reach 700,000, Soul Melter EX has to be cleared under 20:55.40. Meanwhile, it's impossible to reach 710,000 because that requires Soul Melter EX to be cleared under 04:15.40.
