"Air Ride: Magma Flows" (capitalized as "Air Ride: MAGMA FLOWS" in the Sound Test, and occasionally simply called "Magma Flows") is a theme that originated from the Japanese version of Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, before appearing in the Kirby games starting with Kirby Air Ride. It can be heard in the race track of the same name, and was composed by Shogo Sakai.
Composition
"Air Ride: Magma Flows" is an energetic theme in A minor, 4/4. The intro section features a descending octave topped with a gong crash, then followed by a rapid xylophone passage. The first section begins with a descending glissando played by woodwinds and a xylophone and a piano bassline ascending by thirds. Its melody, played octaves apart by a clarinet and bassoon, begins with an ascending scale, and its second phrase consists of broken chords, which are interrupted by brass and a reiteration of the xylophone passage. This melody plays four times with different instruments and makes way for the second section, played by strings and consisting of dominant-tonic chords in A minor, C major and E minor (the triad's tonalities), and suspends on the dominant to B minor. The third section stays in this key and bears many similarities with the "Fountain of Dreams" theme, maintaining most of its instrumentation, melodic patterns, and rhythm. A high-pitched suspenseful final section ties it back to the first section, at which point the track loops.
