0² (also spelled O²,[1] 02,[2] and Zero Two[3]) is the true final boss of Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, who inhabits the center of the final world of Dark Star and whose defeat causes the star to explode. It bears some similarities to Zero from Kirby's Dream Land 3, but it is not known if they are meant to be the same character.
0² also makes cameo appearances in both Kirby Star Allies and Kirby's Dream Buffet. In addition, it appears as a boss in Kirby Air Riders, with a digital design.
Physical appearance[edit]
On 0²'s egg-like body is a halo, a pair of wings (which are dark red at the tips), and a dark red eye. It also has a bandage under its halo and a spike on its underside, which transforms into a spiky cactus-like protrusion when its halo is removed (this protrusion is also its weak point). 0² releases blood (confirmed to be such by the credits illustration of 0² and the game's ESRB rating in Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition) when its eye is hit, though this does not actually damage it. Its halo and wings, together with the bandage, may suggest that 0² is a reincarnation or angelic form of Zero (who previously tore its own eye out while fighting Kirby).
Game appearances[edit]
Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards[edit]

In order to battle 0² and obtain the true ending of the game, all of the Crystal Shards from each previous star must be collected and then Miracle Matter must be defeated. 0² is also faced as the last opponent in the Boss Battles mode.
0² has only two forms of attack: firing explosive orbs from its eye, and releasing green gas when its tail is exposed. Both of these projectiles will damage Kirby on contact, though they can be easily avoided with continuous movement.
Kirby uses Ribbon's Crystal as a weapon during the battle, and Ribbon uses her wings to guide Kirby around. 0² starts off impervious to direct damage. In order to reveal its weak point, Kirby can stun it by striking its eye 30 times. While 0² is stunned, Kirby and Ribbon can attack its wings to disable them or fly to its halo and shoot it 10 times, after which it vanishes and leaves its band-aid unprotected which, when hit, causes 0² to flip over revealing its spiky green tail. Kirby must deal enough damage to the tail before it retracts, repeating the battle cycle. If both of 0²'s wings are disabled, it will move much more slowly, allowing Kirby to get hits in on its halo without having to shoot the eye first. After enough damage is done to it, 0² is defeated, and it explodes with the Dark Star.
The player can also rotate the camera during the fight if they press the L or R buttons.
Kirby Star Allies[edit]
In Kirby Star Allies, 0² appears in the "Chasing Our Dreams" and "Bad Boss Brothers" Celebration Pictures alongside other characters from Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards and other bosses across the series, respectively.
Kirby's Dream Buffet[edit]
While 0² doesn't appear in Kirby's Dream Buffet, one of the randomly selected names for a CPU Kirby during online matches is "Zero2sOwie", referencing the bandage on its head.
Kirby Air Riders[edit]
Zero Two appears as a boss of the VS. Boss Stadium in Kirby Air Riders, fought in an area resembling Cyberion Highway. It also appears at the end of Digital Superhighway and in Journey's End in Road Trip. Zero Two sports a new design in this game, with its body, halo, and wings now being made up of paper-like fragments and its eye being considerably larger. New artwork of Zero Two also appears as an unlockable sticker for the player's License Card, using a design closer to its original appearance.
Music[edit]
- Main article: 0² Battle
The boss battle theme of 0² is composed by Jun Ishikawa and titled "0² Battle". The track can be found as Music 31 in the Sound Check mode of Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards.
This theme has been rearranged for Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and the Brawl arrangement has later been reused in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. This theme has also been rearranged for both Kirby Star Allies and the Kirby Café.
Trivia[edit]

- If the player pauses the game in Dark Star, the "Try Again" option (which functions the same as "Quit" in other games) will be replaced by "Tough It Out!" (がんばる, "do your best", in Japanese), which functions the same as selecting the "Continue" button, so the player cannot quit the battle or leave the star in question.
- While this does not happen throughout the rest of the level if the player has already completed the star, the pause menu for 0² will always display "Tough It Out!", with the exception of the game's Boss Battles mode, where pausing the game even when battling 0² will display an "Accept Defeat" option, which lets the player get out of the battle as if Kirby ran out of health.
- Before the fight with 0² begins, the boss briefly shows a strange less-threatening face, with two black dots for eyes and the closed main eye resembling a smile. The reason why it briefly looks like this before changing to its look during the fight is unknown, though it may be a feint based on 0²'s sketch in the bad ending credits of the game or to catch the player off-guard before the fight.
- This same face would be referenced much later by Void Termina and Void Soul during their final phases. As Void, he also makes this face in his pause screen.
- Additionally, the winged angel form of Void Termina's wings somewhat resemble those of 0², though much more substantial in nature, especially in Soul Melter.
- The background for this boss fight is actually part of 0²'s model. The background itself is later referenced by the pool on the ground of The Divine Terminus in Heroes in Another Dimension once three dimensions are cleared and when fighting Morpho Knight in either Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go! (version 3.0.0. only) or Soul Melter of The Ultimate Choice as Adeleine & Ribbon, Dark Meta Knight and Daroach.
- The official guide for Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards by Prima Games mentions that 0² is "a benevolent creature who rarely presents trouble in the cloud levels of Shiver Star", which is false. It is likely that its description was mistakenly swapped with Mopoo's.
