The Kirby Quiz is the 64th episode of the Kirby: Right Back at Ya! series. In this episode, to commemorate the New Year, King Dedede and Escargoon set up a special quiz show based on Kirby and the events of previous episodes hosted by the N.M.E. Sales Guy. The quiz proceeds normally at first, but King Dedede and Escargoon attempt to sabotage it near the end. Despite initially appearing to win the event, Kirby and Tiff reveal their trick to the crowd, and the N.M.E. Sales Guy disqualifies them, allowing Tiff and Kirby to win the event instead. King Dedede and Escargoon then receive a "consolation prize" of being launched from a fireworks cone.
This episode serves as a way to recap the series up to this point, in a similar fashion to The Pillow Case. The way the episode proceeds makes it questionable whether or not it is part of the overall storyline of the show.

Plot
Plot synopsis
It's new year in Dream Land, so King Dedede decides to wake up Escargoon to watch the sunrise on New Year's Day (which Escargoon finds to his surprise). King Dedede then wakes up everyone with colors. He and Escargoon then decide to tell everyone about the Kirby Quiz, which the Enterprises Salesman hosts. Excited, Kirby, Tiff (who is at first suspicious), Tuff, and the others enter. Eventually, the five teams are set. Tiff and Kirby form the Star Team, Tuff and Tokkori form the Moon Team, Samo and Chef Kawasaki form the lightning team, fortune teller Mabel and Honey form the Flower Team, and King Dedede and Escargoon form the Treasure team, whose audience Waddle Dees make up. Tiff wonders why the Nightmare Enterprises Salesman is hosting the quiz, but her parents kindly ask that she lets go of her anger since it is the new year.

The episode begins at Castle Dedede, where King Dedede and Escargoon are riding the throne as it travels along its automated rail system and they are talking about greeting the sunrise on a new year. Once they reach a certain balcony, King Dedede greets that sunrise, and then commences a celebration by having his Waddle Dees fire the castle's cannons to wake everyone else up. From there, a new show broadcasts on Channel DDD called "The Kirby Quiz Challenge", and invites five teams of contestants to win a grand prize. A special stage is set up which everybody in Cappy Town attends and Escargoon announces the teams of contestants (details in section below) and finishes by introducing the N.M.E. Sales Guy as the host. Once everyone is set up in their podiums, the quiz begins.

The Star Team gets most of the questions correct (They fail to answer a question which involved what Kirby did when King Dedede converted his castle into an amusement park and another question which involved what King Dedede when an asteroid was bound on course for planet Popstar) and is in the lead with an amazing 140 points. However, the Treasure Team retaliates with a trap: Kirby goes off to find a watermelon, so Tiff goes after his trail to get him back, disabling their team for the penultimate question.
As the quiz progresses, the Star Team consisting of Tiff and Kirby gains a considerable lead over the other teams, with the Treasure Team of King Dedede and Escargoon falling steadily behind and getting frustrated. In order to boost their chances, they distract Kirby with a watermelon around Question 10 to force the Star Team to be absent for a moment. As the final question comes up, the N.M.E. Sales Guy reveals the grand prize to be a free trip to the tropical planet "Hawahu". For the last question, all contestants guess the right answer, but have their answers sabotaged excepting King Dedede and Escargoon, allowing the Treasure Team to claim the special 100 point question and win the event. As soon as Kirby returns from his snack, however, he accidentally bumps into the Waddle Dee who had done the sabotaging, revealing the trick to the crowd. Seeing this, the N.M.E. Sales Guy ends up disqualifying the Treasure Team, allowing the Star Team to take the win instead. For their efforts, the Treasure Team is given a "consolation prize" of being launched from the fireworks cannons that commemorate the end of the event and to celebrate the new year. The episode ends as the other characters watch the fireworks.

For the final question ("Which animals tried to take over Dream Land?"), as the Quiz's Grand Prize is a cruise to a faraway resort on planet Hawaii, everyone gets the correct answer (sheep, possibly referencing how a monster named Amon tried to take over Dream Land in his attempt to gain revenge after King Dedede attempted to eat him), but King Dedede changes everyone elses' answers to random errors, giving his team victory. However, Kirby (who just returned after his snack) then accidentally exposes King Dedede's plot. As a result of this, the Star Team is pronounced the winner instead as King Dedede and Escargoon are blown up by fireworks as punishment for their actions and everyone who does not get blown up laughs.

*In the Japanese version, Escargoon points out that New Year's Day was "four days ago".
Moon Team: 80 points
*In the Japanese version, Kirby repeats "Fire Kirby!" along with Tiff when answering Question 6.
Lightning Team: 80 points

Flower Team: 40 points (Erroneously depected as 20)
*After King Dedede answers Dedede instead of Knuckle Joe, in the English version, he says his hand must've slipped. In the Japanese version, he hated that his own name wasn't showing up.
Treasure Team: ????

*In the Japanese version, the N.M.E. Sales Guy explicitly names the grand prize destination as "Planet Hawaii".

Plot synopsis[edit]

Kirby accidentally bumps into a Waddle Dee who was responsible for rigging the quiz in favor of King Dedede and Escargoon.

Differences between versions[edit]

Japanese-exclusive scene where Meta Knight and his soldiers comment on the show as they watch.
  • In the Japanese version, there are a few extra minor shots of characters watching the Channel DDD broadcast.
  • In the Japanese version, Samo and Chef Kawasaki are appointed to the Snow Team, not the Lightning Team.
  • In the Japanese version, there is an extra scene where Meta Knight and his soldiers comment on the quiz show being run by Night Mare Enterprises.
  • In the Japanese version, an arrangement of A New Wind for Tomorrow plays during Question 8.
  • In the Japanese version, the small signs that the N.M.E. Sales Guy holds up during the true/false question have the letters "T" and "L" on them, for "Truth" and "Lie". In the international versions, the L sign is changed to an "F" for "False".
  • In the Japanese version, the banner in the party ball that opens up for the Treasure Team after the final question has English text which reads "CONGRATULATIONS". In the international versions, it is blank.

Dialogue differences[edit]

  • In the Japanese version, Escargoon points out that New Year's Day was "four days ago".
  • In the Japanese version, Kirby repeats "Fire Kirby!" along with Tiff when answering Question 6.
  • In the Japanese version, the N.M.E. Sales Guy explicitly breaks the fourth wall when he chides the teams for getting Question 6 wrong, saying (translated) "Now now, if you got up early every week to watch the show, you'd know these things!"
  • After King Dedede answers Dedede instead of Knuckle Joe, in the English version, he says his hand must've slipped. In the Japanese version, he hated that his own name wasn't showing up.
    • In the question after that (the name of Knuckle Joe's attack), Escargoon's and Dedede's answer in English is "who cares, anyway?". In the Japanese version, they say they don't know.
  • In the Japanese version, the N.M.E. Sales Guy explicitly names the grand prize destination as "Planet Hawaii".

Trivia[edit]

  • The symbol of the Treasure Team resembles a blue Rupee from The Legend of Zelda franchise.
  • The image of "Planet Hawahu" shown on the screen appears to be a representation of the coast of the real-world city Honolulu.
