Kirby Takes the Cake is the 51st (49th in the 4Kids broadcast) episode of the Kirby: Right Back at Ya! series. In this episode, Tiff and the people of Dream Land prepare to throw Kirby a surprise party to commemorate the first anniversary of his arrival, but a series of misunderstandings leads Kirby to believe that everyone is shunning him, and he packs up to leave Dream Land. Meanwhile, King Dedede believes the party to initially be a plan to topple him from power, and only learns the real intent of the people after he ruins their decorations. Before Kirby gets too far away, he is recalled after the misunderstanding is cleared up, and the party is thrown. King Dedede shows up to give Kirby a present as well, but it turns out to be a trap, and Kirby is attacked by the bomb-throwing monster Danger. After a brief struggle, Kirby defeats this monster using the Bomb Copy Ability, and celebrates the rest of his night in peace while King Dedede and Escargoon are punished by their own soldiers for their treachery.

The episode begins at Kirby's house, where Kirby wakes up from his nest and goes running into Cappy Town. There, he tries to find Tiff in a crowd of Cappies, and upon spotting her, he runs toward her. Seeing him, however, Tiff and everyone else scatter and flee mysteriously, leaving Kirby alone in the Cappy Town plaza to wonder what is going on. Just outside of Kirby's perimeter, Tiff, Tuff and the Cappy kids talk about their secret plans to throw Kirby a surprise party, having apparently run from him to keep him from finding out too soon. Later on, Kirby heads over to Mayor Len's villa and sees the Cappies there woodworking. When Kirby tries to get close, Mayor Len spots him and blows his whistle to call the sheep in, using them to block view of what the Cappies are doing. Mayor Len then tells Kirby that this is no place for him to be, and sends him off. Next, Kirby heads over to Kawasaki's to greet the chef who is preparing a large number of dishes, but Chef Kawasaki immediately tosses Kirby out upon seeing him. As Kirby then wanders down the Cappy Town streets, Chief Bookem spots him and blows his whistle, causing all the Cappies to rush inside their houses and shut their doors. Chief Bookem then offers a quick excuse to Kirby and shuts his door as well.

Meanwhile, at Castle Dedede, Escargoon delivers a warning to King Dedede that the Cappies may be plotting some kind of rebellion behind his back. They head out and spy on Iro and Spikehead as they deliver what look like gunpowder kegs to a wooden shack and assume the Cappies are working on explosives. After spying on the Cappies working in town, King Dedede comes to the conclusion that they are planning to celebrate an upcoming revolution, and he and Escargoon quickly return to the castle to formulate a counter-plan. Dedede calls up Night Mare Enterprises and asks them to send him their most powerful monster. The N.M.E. Sales Guy warns Dedede that the monster in question has trouble distinguishing friend from foe and may be a handful, but Dedede insists they send him anyway. At that moment, elsewhere in the castle, Tiff forces Kirby out of the room where she and the other kids were working on decorations. She explains to Kirby that she is super busy and closes the door on him. Kirby lingers at the door for a while and overhears Tiff talking to the other kids, saying that Kirby will ruin everything if he goes in there.

After getting brushed off yet again - this time by King Dedede and Escargoon - Kirby heads home dejected, and tells Tokkori about what happened. Tokkori rubs salt in the wound by insisting to Kirby that nobody likes him and that he should leave, but Tokkori did not count on Kirby taking him at his word and actually packing up and heading out, and the bird is left alone in the house during his sarcastic diatribe. Kirby looks back at Cappy Town one last time from the hill he first saw it from in episode 1, and then turns and heads toward Kabu Canyon to collect his Warp Star. Meanwhile, down in town, Tiff and the Cappies are hard at work preparing for Kirby's surprise party, unaware of what has just happened. King Dedede rushes in to the plaza with his retinue of Waddle Dees in order to put an end to what he believes to be an insurrection and wrecks the decorations in the process. After Dedede apprehends the townsfolk, Tiff explains to him that they were planning to throw a party for Kirby to commemorate the first anniversary of his arrival in Dream Land. On this, King Dedede changes his tune, and insists that he will bring a present to Kirby for his party and drives off.

After looking over the damage Dedede did to the Cappies' preparations, Tiff wonders where Kirby went off to. She then learns what Tokkori did and scolds the bird harshly, then orders Tokkori to go find Kirby before it is too late. At Kabu Canyon, the great sage urges Kirby not to leave, and reminds him that he has been in Dream Land for a year. Kirby remembers all the happy moments he had over the course of his time in Dream Land, but is still saddened when he remembers how he was rejected, and starts to tear up. At that moment, Meta Knight finds him and asks Kirby what he is doing there. From there, Tokkori finds Kirby and urges him to return to Cappy Town, telling him that everybody is waiting for him. At this news, Kirby cheers up and heads back out of the canyon, as Meta Knight ponders the time that has passed. Meanwhile, at the castle, King Dedede receives a shipment through N.M.E. of a giant cake meant for Kirby. As the pink Star Warrior reaches his house again, he grows dismayed seeing it dark and quiet. He gently opens the door and sets his knapsack down inside, when he is greeted by Tiff and his friends with lights and confetti poppers, wishing him a happy anniversary. They then take him out to see lights and tables set up, where the whole town greets and cheers for him. After apologizing to Kirby for the misunderstanding, Tiff directs him to pull the cord on a party ball. He does so, revealing a commemorative banner and more confetti.

The celebration is interrupted, however, when King Dedede and Escargoon pull up in the Royal Racecar. They deliver the massive cake they ordered earlier, which eases the tension of everyone present. Kirby jumps onto the cake to get a taste, and falls off again satisfied. At that moment, the cake rocks and bursts open, revealing the monster Danger, who immediately attacks Kirby and company with bombs. Tiff is outraged at Dedede for his betrayal, but after taking a few bombs themselves, Dedede and Escargoon decide to leave early. Kirby then inhales one of Danger's bombs to gain the Bomb Copy Ability. After a brief duel, Bomb Kirby manages to return one of Danger's giant bombs to him, causing the monster to explode and be defeated. After Meta Knight admires Kirby's growth in skill, Tiff gives Kirby one more heartfelt word and embraces him, as the rest of the Dream Landers applaud. Captain Waddle Doo then launches King Dedede and Escargoon out of a cannon and they explode in the air causing fireworks to shower the night sky. Seeing this, Kirby then hops into the cannon and fires himself up, creating a massive Kirby-shaped firework explosion. The episode ends as Kirby poses in the sky.

King Dedede shows up to give Kirby a present as well, but it turns out to be a trap, and Kirby is attacked by the bomb-throwing monster Dangerous Bomb. After a brief struggle, Kirby defeats this monster using the Bomb Copy Ability, and celebrates the rest of his night in peace while King Dedede and Escargoon are punished by their own soldiers for their treachery.

This is the final episode of Season 2, and marks the first year anniversary of the show's debut in Japan. This episode also marks the first appearance of the Bomb Copy Ability in the anime series.

Plot synopsis

Kirby prepares to leave Dream Land, believing that he is no longer wanted there.

Kirby is given a surprise welcome after returning to his house.

Tiff gives Kirby a warm embrace after he defeats Dangerous Bomb.

At that moment, the cake rocks and bursts open, revealing the monster Dangerous Bomb, who immediately attacks Kirby and company with bombs. Tiff is outraged at Dedede for his betrayal, but after taking a few bombs themselves, Dedede and Escargoon decide to leave early. Kirby then inhales one of Dangerous Bomb's bombs to gain the Bomb Copy Ability. After a brief duel, Bomb Kirby manages to return one of Dangerous Bomb's giant bombs to him, causing the monster to explode and be defeated.

Differences between versions

  • The flashback montage that Kirby has when remembering moments from earlier episodes is longer in the Japanese version, containing more clips.

Dialogue differences

  • In the Japanese version, the dialogue is such that the audience watching is not explicitly told what the party is for until King Dedede learns about it from Fumu directly.
    • Additionally, each time Kirby is brushed away, he is asked to "go somewhere else", which reinforces the notion that he is being asked to leave Pupupu Land.
  • In the Japanese version, it is implied that King Dedede did not know that a monster would come out of the cake, having apparently forgotten about his earlier order when he believed a revolution was coming.

Trivia

The artists for the episode envisioned that in preparing to leave Cappy Town, Kirby packed two slices of watermelon.
  • When Escargoon is informing King Dedede about the Cappies' strange behavior, he trips and falls on his face, claiming to have bruised his nose. This is an odd statement, given that Escargoon appears to have no nose to bruise. In the Japanese version, he makes no such claim.
  • It remains unclear how Kirby managed to communicate to Tokkori that everyone was avoiding him.
  • Concept art for the episode suggests that what Kirby packed in his furoshiki or bindle was nothing more than two slices of watermelon.[1]
  • This episode marks the first time that Captain Waddle Doo and the Waddle Dees turned on their King and punished him for something he did to Kirby.
  • Since the previous episode ended with King Dedede being trapped in another dimension as a result of Kirby inhaling the last Dedede doll, it's unknown how he was able to escape prior to the events of this episode.
