Curio's Curious Discovery is the eighth episode of the Kirby: Right Back at Ya! series. In this episode, King Dedede aims to bolster his ailing royal legitimacy to the people of Cappy Town by bribing Professor Curio to forge archaeological discoveries of relics from Dedede's family line. After the cover-up is exposed by Tiff, Curio's good conscience as a seeker of truth gets the better of him, and he reveals the ploy to the town during what was supposed to be a rehearsed speech. Enraged at this betrayal, Dedede calls forth a monster from one of the relics; a towering stone replica of the king called the Dedede Stone to destroy Cappy Town. With Curio's help, Kirby gains the Stone ability and uses it to destroy the monster.

This episode marks the first time a Cappy has been a primary character of an episode (namely Professor Curio).

Plot synopsis

Tiff gathers a crowd of Cappies to exhibit an unearthed casket.

The episode begins at Castle Dedede, where a formal ceremony is being held in honor of King Dedede's coronation anniversary. The King comes out to make his speech to the assembly only to realize that nobody from Cappy Town showed up. Enraged at this, along with teasing remarks from his cabinet, Dedede vows to assert himself as the one true ruler of Dream Land. Some time later, Professor Curio and Tiff are digging at an archaeology site while Kirby and Tuff play in the dirt. After falling into a couple pranks from her brother, Tiff becomes notably frustrated, when she discovers something in one of the holes. She asks Curio about it, who nervously denies any knowledge of it. Tiff and Tuff dig up the object, revealing it to be a massive stone coffin. They run off to tell Cappy Town about their discovery as Curio stays behind, still acting strangely.

Later, Tiff has assembled a sizable group of Cappies to witness the opening of the coffin, convinced that it contains an ancient Cappy king. Just before opening it, King Dedede and Escargoon come driving in on their Armored Vehicle, berating the Cappies for not showing up at his ceremony. Tiff tells him off, insisting the coffin is evidence that he is not their real ruler, but plays right into Dedede's hands when he opens the coffin, revealing what appears to be the remains of a former king who resembles Dedede. After gloating a bit, King Dedede invites the people of Cappy Town to go digging for more treasures that verify his standing as the real King of Dream Land while Tiff is in utter disbelief. While he dances with the skeleton from the coffin, Curio walks away in a sullen state as the kids look on.

Curio reveals the con to the Cappies.

Tiff meets up with Curio at his museum later that night and consoles him over the incident. Curio still appears downtrodden at first, but then reasons that perhaps the ordeal would at least make the Cappies more interested in archaeology. He thanks Tiff and then excuses himself to some private business. Later, Tiff's family is having dinner and discussing the situation while Tiff herself is still pondering what happened. Filled with a new determination, she sets off as Kirby claims her uneaten dinner. Tiff ventures into Cappy Town in the dead of night and finds Curio hauling a large sarcophagus from his museum. Tiff follows covertly and discovers the professor burying Dedede-themed relics at the excavation site. Using her camera, she snaps photos of Curio in the act of planting the fake artifacts.

The Dedede Stone crumbles into bricks.

The next day, a bunch of Cappies come to the site to find the sarcophagus as Curio presents it to them. At that moment, Tiff pulls the professor aside and reveals the photos to him. She threatens to turn him in if he doesn't come clean, and leaves him to think about it. As she leaves, Escargoon and King Dedede corner her, Tuff, and Kirby in order to prevent the truth from getting out. They then prompt Curio to make a big rehearsed speech to the assembled crowd regarding the relics as the kids are gagged and tied up in the back. As the whole town is assembled, Curio begins his speech as instructed, but just as he is about to tell the lie, he remembers Tiff's words, which force him to give up the act. He declares all the artifacts fake and reveals the reason for his forgery, throwing the photos Tiff gave him into the crowd as proof. As Dedede loses his temper, Tiff, Tuff and Kirby appear before the crowd to confirm his wrongdoings, having been freed by Meta Knight. Out of options, King Dedede reveals his last resort, as the sarcophagus is shown to be a monster called the Dedede Stone. The stone starts growing in size as everyone flees the excavation site.

The Dedede Stone busts out into the open air and starts rampaging as Dedede and Escargoon ride on top. Curio runs after it with his pickaxe, but is distracted as the kids run in as well. Tiff trips and nearly gets stomped by the monster, but Meta Knight steps in and holds its foot up with his sword. Kirby attempts to inhale the Dedede Stone, but to little effect. As he tries again, Curio runs forward and strikes the monster's foot with his pickaxe. The small pieces that fly off enter Kirby's mouth and he transforms into Stone Kirby. Using his power, Kirby knocks over the Dedede Stone, but then gets caught by the monster as it tries to squish him. Tiff calls the Warp Star to come to Kirby's aid. Using the Warp Star, Kirby transforms into his stone form and drops directly onto the Dedede Stone's head, boring a hole through the center of the beast and emerging down below. This causes the monster to shatter into pieces and crumble, burying King Dedede and Escargoon in the rubble. As the episode ends, Curio swears to the kids that he will never forge his findings again, as Meta Knight comments on how Kirby has improved as a fighter.

Differences between versions

  • During Curio's speech, the flashback cuts are slightly different between versions.

Dialogue differences

  • In the Japanese version, Doctor Escargon states that King Dedede has been on the throne for 300 years in addition to being the 17,052nd King of Pupupu Land.
  • In the Japanese version, Fumu reassures Curio by telling him that it's great that the town is more interested in archaeology, rather than telling him that it is better to dig to the truth than prove theories right.
  • In the Japanese version, Stone Kirby shouts "Stone Kirby!" when using his transformation.
  • In the Japanese version, Escargon promises Kirby all the candy he wants if he frees him and Dedede from the mountain of bricks, rather than promising not to attack until after they are free.

Trivia

  • This is the first episode to not feature Mayor Len Blustergas or Tokkori.
  • The overall plot of this episode is likely a reference to the Japanese Paleolithic hoax, in which an archaeologist made famous for stone age tool discoveries was eventually ousted as a fraud when he was caught planting artifacts at dig sites.
