In [[The True Arena]], dimensional rifts also appear to transport Kirby into the last five (six in ''Deluxe'') battles. Carryable items like the [[Maxim Tomato box]] cannot be carried into this rift due to the lack of a support platform below the rift, resulting in it being too high for Kirby and friends to jump into. These rifts do not remove Kirby's current ability.

The lost Energy Spheres have created dimensional rifts. The Grand Doomer has emerged from one such rift!
— VS Grand Doomer EX description from Kirby's Return to Dream Land

Various star-shaped rifts called "dimensional rifts" appear throughout the Kirby series, starting with Kirby's Return to Dream Land. Usually, these dimensional rifts connect to an eerie, alternate dimension known as Another Dimension, and they can be summoned by various means. In the games that they appear in, they typically play a role to some varying degree, allowing Kirby and allies access to interdimensional segments and summoning enemies or bosses to challenge them.

This article does not account for similar-looking portals which do not appear to have any confirmed link to Another Dimension. Because of this, they are listed under this section instead.

Game appearances[edit]

Kirby's Return to Dream Land / Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]

Dimensional rifts make their first appearance in Kirby's Return to Dream Land, and also appear in the remake. In gameplay, these rifts are typically opened up by using a Super Ability to destroy a very large object near the end of the current stage. By simply touching a dimensional rift, Kirby will be automatically warped through it into an interdimensional segment set within Another Dimension, losing his current Super Ability or Copy Ability in the process.

Eventually, after defeating a Sphere Doomer and collecting its Energy Spheres, another dimensional rift will open at the end of the interdimensional stretch which will take Kirby back to the stage he was in, and the rift will close up afterwards. These rifts are colored blue in Story Mode, but gain a more reddish purple hue in Extra Mode. It is explained in Grand Doomer EX's flavor text that dimensional rifts are created by Energy Spheres, including an unseen one created by a Part Sphere containing the Lor Starcutter's mast that draws forth Grand Doomer.

Dimensional rifts also appear throughout cutscenes, with much rounder ones being created by the Lor Starcutter to travel to Planet Popstar and Halcandra. During his betrayal of Kirby and friends, Magolor under the effects of the Master Crown also creates a dimensional rift to escape into Another Dimension while everyone also pursues through the same rift with Landia's help. They are also utilized by Magolor and his second form in various attacks, like summoning Para Doomers and ramming into Kirby while warping around the stage. A dimensional rift leading to Planet Popstar is also present throughout Magolor's boss battle, which draws near as the battle comes to a close.

In The True Arena, dimensional rifts also appear to transport Kirby into the last five (six in Deluxe) battles. Carryable items like the Maxim Tomato box cannot be carried into this rift, as they are knocked away from the holder even if the necessary height is achieved with a Step-'n-Jump. These rifts do not remove Kirby's current ability.

Magolor about to enter a dimensional rift leading to a boss stage in Magolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler.

In Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Super Ability-granting enemies are now summoned through smaller dimensional rifts instead of just appearing on screen. In Magolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler, dimensional rifts are used as means of accessing various stages in the mode, entered in a similar fashion to doors. Boss stages are represented by a sharper and larger rift, and bonus stages are represented with a similar rift modeled after a door with a round frame. Enemy ambushes at the end of most stages make use of smaller rifts to summon them into the stage. Lastly, all stages (with the exception of Ethereal Altar) also end with a bright-colored dimensional rift, and are still entered by touching them like in Story Mode.

The Crowned Doomer and the Master Crown bosses also make use of dimensional rifts for some of their attacks. At the end of this mode, Magolor jumps into a big dimensional rift which eventually leads him into the Dream Kingdom.

Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]

Galacta Knight is sent back into Another Dimension in Kirby: Planet Robobot.

In the Meta Knightmare Returns side mode in Kirby: Planet Robobot, Star Dream uses a dimensional rift to summon Galacta Knight. Eventually, after he is defeated by Meta Knight, Galacta Knight is resealed back into the crystal, and is sent back into another rift, concluding the adventure.

Galacta Knight has a very unique case of opening up an irregular-shaped rift to Another Dimension, by using the "Time-Border Great Slash Flash" attack. It creates a slash-shaped portal that blasts an interdimensional laser beam diagonally. Through this rift, one can rarely see the Lor Starcutter flying through.

Team Kirby Clash Deluxe[edit]

Dimensional rifts are used as part of the entrance animations for Greater Doomer and Parallel Susie in Team Kirby Clash Deluxe. These rifts appear much larger in scale to account for the size of these bosses, but otherwise they act the same. When Parallel Susie is defeated, she is also banished into another dimensional rift.

Kirby Star Allies[edit]

Two dimensional rifts await for Kirby to enter in Heroes in Another Dimension.

In Kirby Star Allies, the dimensional rifts in Heroes in Another Dimension connect to four different dimensions set within Another Dimension, however they are shown with a more particulate, void-like appearance. They mostly act the same as in Kirby's Return to Dream Land. Additionally, dimensional rifts are replicated in Guest Star Magolor Best Friends Forever in the form of doors, which lead to unique grayscale segments replicating the interdimensional stretches from their game of origin.

Super Kirby Clash[edit]

In Super Kirby Clash, Parallel Nightmare makes use of star-shaped rifts to summon King D-Mind and Aeon Hero in their respective battles. Notably, these share a similar appearance to the ones that appear in Heroes in Another Dimension and Guest Star ???? from Kirby Star Allies, while still described as "dimensional rifts".[1] Greater Doomer and Parallel Susie are still summoned via Kirby's Return to Dream Land-styled dimensional rifts, which are now given a more detailed, jagged-like appearance while retaining its shape. Pres. Parallel Susie is also summoned through such a rift as well.

Aeon Hero can also perform the "Time-Border Great Slash Flash" attack from Kirby: Planet Robobot, which once again summons a slash-shaped dimensional rift to blast a laser diagonally. Through this rift, the Jamba Heart can rarely be seen floating about.

Similar portals[edit]

Similar-looking star-shaped rifts are summoned by Fecto Elfilis in some of their attacks in Kirby and the Forgotten Land.

There are similar portals used throughout the series since Kirby's Return to Dream Land that have a similar or different shape but are either not confirmed to transport to Another Dimension, or just directly transport to and from completely different dimensions. This section does not account for tangible objects that also act as interdimensional gateways, such as the Black Mirror.

Trivia[edit]

  • A unique stage transition animation is used if Kirby enters a dimensional rift in Kirby's Return to Dream Land and its remake. In the former, everything around the rift turns white and swirls around, while in the latter, a purple swirl-shaped transition with stars is used.
