— Description of Scarfy from the Kirby: Triple Deluxe website

Scarfy is a common and reoccurring enemy in the Kirby series, being found in nearly every game. It resembles a usually orange, floating catlike head with pointed ears, two small, black eyes, bright cheeks and a mouth. It typically transforms into a brown, cycloptic version of itself with sharp teeth when angered, known as Angry Scarfy.[1] Throughout the series, Scarfy can take on a number of different behavior patterns, but its most common strategy is to hover in place, only chasing Kirby if he tries to inhale it or otherwise attacks it. Some may only transform when Kirby or another character is holding a carry item such as a key (these are called Hunter Scarfies), while others may turn hostile when Kirby passes by them. Others still may turn hostile immediately. When Scarfy turns angry, it will chase Kirby down for several moments before slowing down and detonating in an explosion. This explosive nature is likely the reason why Scarfy grants the Crash Copy Ability when scanned using Copy in Kirby Super Star and Kirby Super Star Ultra. Otherwise, Scarfy cannot provide an ability, because it cannot be inhaled.

Kirby's Dream Land

Scarfies debut in the first installment of the series, Kirby's Dream Land, where their official artwork shows them to be a pinkish hue and possess red cheeks. Here, they are encountered only in Bubbly Clouds and the section of Mt. Dedede devoted to it. Scarfies slowly float up and down in one place until Kirby attempts to inhale them, at which point they transform into their cycloptic form and begin to chase him and eventually explode. Defeating them likewise causes them to detonate, harming Kirby if he gets caught in their blast. Many Scarfies are initially hidden, but quickly fly into view once Kirby gets near them.

Kirby's Adventure / Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land

Scarfies reappear in Kirby's Adventure and its remake, Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. Although the original Nintendo Entertainment System game portrays them in the same way as the previous game, including using the same artwork, its Game Boy Advance remake makes use of the enemy's more recent, orange design.

Here, Scarfies act very similarly to their original appearance. Scarfies that are initially exposed are much more frequent in these games, while those that are hidden usually move onto the same height as Kirby when they reveal themselves. Due to the introduction of Copy Abilities, they can often be destroyed without being given the chance to transform. Unlike in the previous game, they do not create a harmful explosion when beaten, simply popping like most other enemies instead.

Kirby's Pinball Land

Scarfy appears in the lowermost board of Kracko Land. Here, it must be bumped into six times (for 450 points each bump) to result in it splitting into three smaller Scarfies. From here, if Kirby bumps into one of the small Scarfies, he will briefly take its place (and earn 120 points) before the other two push him away. If Kirby had taken the place of the top Scarfy, he will be pushed up into the middle board.

Kirby's Dream Land 2

Scarfies return in Kirby's Dream Land 2, using the same sprite as in the first game and lacking official artwork. They first appear in Big Forest and behave identically to their original incarnation, apart from the fact that they always appear in plain view. When Kirby destroys a Scarfy, he is awarded 1000 points, the third highest amount of points he can receive from any enemy in the game.

One particular Scarfy found in the first stage of Big Forest guards a bag containing Coo; once the Scarfy is destroyed, the owl is freed.

Kirby's Block Ball

Scarfy appears as a common enemy in this game, worth 600 points when defeated. It drops a Crash item.

Kirby Super Star / Kirby Super Star Ultra

In Kirby Super Star and its remake, Scarfies are found in various stages, retaining their behavior from before. Due to the introduction of a health point system for enemies, not every attack defeats them instantly anymore. Any attack that fails to destroy a Scarfy (including certain Copy Abilities, exhaling air at it and simply touching it) instead angers it, causing it to transform and chase Kirby.

These games also include a rarer variety of Scarfy, which assumes its alternate look and follows Kirby whenever he turns his back to it, but stops and turns back into its initial form when he faces it, in a similar manner as the Boo enemies of the Mario series.

In Milky Way Wishes, where many enemies receive different colorations, Scarfies can be either purple or yellow. Using Copy on any form of Scarfy grants Kirby the Crash ability. In Revenge of the King, Scarfy is replaced by a similar enemy called Mister Anglep.

Scarfies in these titles can be inhaled under a special condition - after being tossed by the Wing ability, and they yield the Crash ability in this way too.

Kirby's Dream Land 3

File:KDL3SprScarfy.png In Kirby's Dream Land 3, Scarfies bear a light pink coloration not unlike their original design, but retain the bright cheeks from Kirby Super Star. Their transformed form also possesses a more pinkish or red shape than in other appearances of the enemy. Scarfies usually behave the same in this game as in its predecessor, but a few specimens found mainly in later levels slowly follow Kirby instead of remaining in one place, even without being angered.

Apart from their immunity to be inhaled, Scarfies are vulnerable to any attack and do not create a harmful explosion upon their destruction. Although it is possible to harm a Scarfy without immediately beating it by jumping into it from below, this does not cause it to transform. Unlike Kirby, Rick is able to eat Scarfies without causing them to transform.

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards

In-game models

In Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Scarfies revert to their orange design, but still turn red rather than brown when angered. In this game, they are first encountered in the first stage of Rock Star and act differently from most of their other appearances; like certain Scarfies in Kirby Super Star, they remain still when Kirby is looking at them, but transform into their angry form and follow Kirby while his back is turned to them. After following the pink hero for a while, they explode, causing damage to him if he is in their blast radius.

As in their other appearances, Scarfies cannot be inhaled; trying to do so causes them to permanently become mad, no matter whether or not Kirby is facing them. Like other enemies in the game that do not yield a Copy Ability, Scarfies do not respawn once destroyed.

Kirby Air Ride

Scarfy makes an appearance in Kirby Air Ride as a common enemy on Air Ride courses. It hovers in place minding its own business unless Kirby tries to inhale it, at which point it will turn angry and chase him down. It can otherwise by defeated with any other attack.

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror & Kirby: Squeak Squad

As Kirby & The Amazing Mirror and Kirby: Squeak Squad take many of its graphics directly from Nightmare in Dream Land, Scarfies are likewise depicted in the same way in these games. Although they behave just like their appearance in Kirby's Adventure, the presence of a health system makes it possible to harm a Scarfy without defeating it; like in Kirby Super Star, doing so causes it to transform. As the Scarfies in these games have the same amount of health as a Waddle Dee, however, most attacks destroy them instantly.

When possessed by Ghost Kirby, Scarfy can be made to turn angry when B is pressed, though this only makes it move faster, and it reverts after a few seconds. It can attack only by collision. A notable detail in Kirby: Squeak Squad is that inhaling Scarfies with the Throw ability actually grabs them, which was not possible in previous games where the ability appears.

In Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, Scarfy can be found in every major area of the Mirror World.

Kirby's Epic Yarn / Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn

The face of an angel? Sure...as long as you don't get Scarfy mad!
— Patch Plaza description

Scarfy appears in yarn form in Kirby's Epic Yarn and Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn. Its behavior is largely the same as before, turning angry instead of being defeated when Kirby attempts to capture one with his Yarn Whip. Despite this, Scarfy can be easily defeated using a yarn ball or with the Weight transformation. In Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn, Scarfy can be found both in the main game and in Stage 2 of the Sub-Game Slash & Bead.

In addition, a Furniture piece resembling Scarfy can be purchased at Chaise Woole's shop.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land / Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe

In-game images of Hunter Scarfy in its docile (top) and angry (bottom) forms in Kirby's Return to Dream Land.

Scarfy once again appears in Kirby's Return to Dream Land. They come in two primary varieties, differentiated by their color. The regular orange ones behave as they have for the series up to this point. The red ones, however, are a new type known as Hunter Scarfies. These Scarfies lie in wait in various places that contain Keys, and are passive until Kirby or one of his friends picks the key up. They then turn hostile and chase that Key holder with surprising speed, giving up the chase only if the key is dropped or used. In this case, their actions resemble Phantos from the Mario series.

Similar enemies also exist throughout the game, to replace Scarfy and match the surroundings, that have similar behavior to Scarfies, such as Mumbies (who pursue Kirby when the latter is not looking) and Degouts (who behave the same but are more powerful).

 This box: view  talk  edit
Cute, 'uh? They're the best pets you can get. These cuddly critters are called Scarfies!
— N.M.E. Sales Guy describing the Scarfies in Dedede's Pet Threat

Scarfy makes an appearance as a monster in the Kirby: Right Back at Ya! episode Dedede's Pet Threat. Here, King Dedede orders four of them as pets from Night Mare Enterprises. He proceeds to spoil them rotten by feeding them absurd amounts of food, so much so that they cost him millions in expenses in a single day. Seeing this, King Dedede immediately rejects his pets and abandons them in Whispy Woods Forest. From here, the Scarfies proceed to eat Mayor Len's sheep, start multiplying in number, and then terrorize Kirby and chase him throughout Dream Land. Kirby eventually leads them back to Castle Dedede, where King Dedede is obliged to feed them the original food they came with. However, when the Scarfies eat these bone treats, they turn into their monstrous angry form and proceed to attack everyone in the castle. Kirby tries to inhale them to stop them but - true to the games - he cannot do so. Instead, he inhales King Dedede's hammer to gain the Hammer Copy Ability, and uses this to pacify the Scarfies after knocking the bone treats out of their mouths. King Dedede is then left to try and sell them back to N.M.E., but he is told that he cannot do so because they have multiplied, and must instead pay to get rid of them.

The Scarfies here are largely true to their physical appearance in the games, but their behavior is fairly different. Here, they are depicted as being cat-like creatures with voracious appetites, and can become rather picky about what they eat, particularly if spoiled beforehand. Despite this, they tend to like raw meat the most, and particularly like the way Kirby tastes, though they find Tokkori to be unpalatable. They are shown to be able to rapidly multiply, as an initial group of four quickly becomes a horde of three hundred over the course of a single day and night. Unlike the Scarfies from the games, the Scarfies in the anime appear to have three distinct forms; in addition to the two from the games, there is also an intermediate form which the Scarfies take on after they are abandoned. The Scarfies are also one of the few monsters that Kirby does not actually destroy, but merely pacifies.

Trivia

  • Since Scarfies are catlike creatures, they appear along with other catlike characters in the Japanese Cat Day illustration on the official Twitter.
  • In Kirby Star Allies, when a Scarfy is cooked with the Cook ability, it is turned into an orange, matching its orange color.
