Gordo is a common enemy in the Kirby series, having appeared in every such game in the main series, along with most of the spin-offs. It typically takes the appearance of a floating blue or black ball with large eyes and spikes around their perimeter. It is completely immune in almost all cases to any attacks thrown at it. At best projectiles will not penetrate it, at worst the attacker will be damaged in return. As such, it is best avoided, not confronted. However, this is often easier said than done, as it tends to generally block Kirby's path by sitting in corridors, bouncing back and forth between two solid objects vertically or horizontally, circling around blocks, or bouncing along the ground affected by gravity.

While Gordo typically cannot be destroyed, it can sometimes be dealt with through other means. If one is bouncing around a hallway, destroying a specific block it bounces against will cause it to leave, or in some cases, leaving one or more will keep it trapped in a small unreachable space, allowing Kirby to move about safely. Many of Kirby's attacks leave him temporarily invincible (like those gained with Burning or Wheel), allowing him to dash through a row of Gordos. Additionately, Gordo can be part of the pool of available minions for bosses to produce. Whispy Woods and his relatives are the most common examples of enemies who will occasionally drop Gordos as hazards for Kirby to avoid. Gordos dropped in this way typically do not last for long, and will bounce off-screen after a little while.

Game appearances

Kirby's Dream Land

Kirby walking past some Gordos in Kirby's Dream Land.

Gordo first appeared in Kirby's Dream Land, where its role as an invincible hazard is established. It is usually seen either holding in place or moving in set patterns. Gordos deal a whopping three bars of damage to Kirby, which is more than any other enemy or hazard in the game, as they all deal only one or two bars.

In Extra Game, Whispy Woods now drops Gordos and Lololo & Lalala can push them. Unlike many other enemies, Gordo is not replaced by anything else in this mode.

Notably, if Kirby touches the Gordos blocking the doors to the boss rematches in Mt. Dedede, he will be immediately defeated, regardless of how much life he had at the time.

Kirby's Adventure / Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land

Gordo returns in Kirby's Adventure and its GBA remake, gaining a somewhat yellow coloration, though its behavior and properties are unchanged. However, it now consistently does only one bar of damage to Kirby, just like everything else.

This was the first game to establish the notion that certain Gordos could be made to leave the screen by removing Star Blocks on their path.

Locations

Gordo can be found in the following levels and stages:

Kirby's Pinball Land

In Kirby's Pinball Land, Gordo (known here as Gordow[1]) appears as a common bumper in all three Pinball Lands, though its purpose changes somewhat in each role. Generally, it is worth 240 points when collided with, cannot be removed, and only bumps Kirby mildly. It can bump Kirby more forcefully in certain situations, however.

In the battle with Whispy Woods, Gordows may occasionally be dropped. If they hit the flippers, the flipper hit will be disabled for a moment. Kirby can bump into them to deflect them.

Kirby's Dream Course

In Kirby's Dream Course, Gordo can be seen in various courses holding still in the air. Like its other appearances, Gordo cannot be attacked, and the player will take damage if they try to attack it.

In this game, Gordo has a different design. Its spherical body is bulkier, and its spikes poke in and out of visible holes.

One of the four courses in the 2P Game - the Gordo Course - features Gordos prominently.

Kirby's Block Ball

Gordo appears in Kirby's Block Ball exclusively as a projectile tossed by Whispy Woods. When it collides with Kirby, it will deflect him, and it will shrink any paddles it hits. Kirby can defeat Gordo in this game by striking it with a Power Bounce or a Copy Ability attack, but Gordo is worth no points when defeated and will not drop any items.

Kirby Super Star / Kirby Super Star Ultra

Gordos appear as common hazards in Kirby Super Star and its remake. In the original version, they share the pale brown coloration common to Gordos in older titles, but in the remake, they adopt the blue hue that has become the standard for Gordo's modern design. They appear when fighting Twin Woods, Lololo & Lalala (and their revenge form), Whispy's Revenge and Kabula.

Kirby's Dream Land 3

In addition to being regular enemies, Gordos play a role in the mini-games of Kirby's Dream Land 3.

Gordos return in Kirby's Dream Land 3 as standard hazards. In addition to this, Gordos also appear as part of all the minigames that Kirby and his Animal Friends can play on their adventure. In these minigames, Gordos are depicted in several different colors, along with several different faces, depending on the game.

Kirby: Squeak Squad

Gordos appear in Kirby: Squeak Squad, looking and acting much the way they did in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land. Since they are invulnerable enemies, they cannot be possessed by Ghost Kirby.

Oddly, there is one particular point in Stage 1 of Gamble Galaxy where Kirby is prompted to jump into a barrel to avoid a wall of passing Gordos. This is the only time in the game (and the series by extension) where Kirby is ever prompted to do such a thing.

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse

If you touch a Gordo, he'll definitely do damage. But I don't think he means to hurt anyone. I asked him once, and he just stared at me with those big eyes of his. Maybe he doesn't even know the answer...
— Figurine description of Gordo from Kirby and the Rainbow Curse

Gordo returns in Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, serving the same purpose as usual. Notably, unlike most other games, there are lots of Gordos that are affected by gravity, falling when the blocks above them (or balloons they are hanging from) are removed.

Locations

In Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, Gordo appears in the following locations:

In Team Kirby Clash Deluxe and Super Kirby Clash, Gordo does not appear as a regular enemy in these games. Instead, it appears as a hazard, occasionally dropped by Whispy Woods during his Tougher encounters.

Kirby's Blowout Blast

Gordos make an appearance in Kirby's Blowout Blast, acting as an indestructible hazard that must be avoided as per usual. Due to not being defeatable, Gordos do not count toward the "Enemies Defeated" bonus.

Kirby Star Allies

Gordo in Kirby Star Allies

Gordos reappear in Kirby Star Allies, now in HD. In this game, Gordos can be defeated if an obstacle crushes them.

In addition to appearing in regular stages, Parallel Woods can drop Gordos from his canopy and Parallel Dedede can throw Gordos using his hammer during the battles against them.

Kirby Fighters 2

Gordo plays a number of different roles in Kirby Fighters 2. It retains its previous role as an item in the form of the Gordo Ball. In addition, it is used as a stage hazard in the Gourmet Go Go and Dedede Arena stages, as well as being used in the boss fights against Twin Woods and the variants of King Dedede & Meta Knight.

In Story Mode: The Destined Rivals, there is a special item called the Anti-Gordo Charm, which Kirby can use to take less damage from Gordo Balls and other Gordo collisions.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land

Gordo appears as an enemy in Kirby and the Forgotten Land, along with a long, bar-shaped Gordo variant. The bar-shaped variant of Gordo rotates in certain areas.

Super Smash Bros. series

Gordos appear in several locations and settings in the Super Smash Bros. games, starting with [[Super Smash Bros. Brawl. King Dedede is able to use a special move involving Gordos in each game he appears in as a fighter. In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, he has a chance to throw a Gordo as part of his Waddle Dee Toss technique, which dealt major damage. In subsequent Smash Bros. games, this move was changed to Gordo Throw, which consistently involves Gordos, but with the added caveat of other fighters being able to knock them back using most attacks. In The Subspace Emissary, an enemy called Jyk can be found which operates exactly like a Gordo would, and looks similar. Gordo also appears as a sticker in this game and applies a +5 bonus to attack when used by any Kirby series fighter.

In Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, Gordos appear in Smash Run, acting as they always have, and serving as a hazard to be avoided. They can damage enemies in addition to the playable fighter, however.

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Gordo appears as a spirit. Specifically, Gordo is an Advanced-level Shield-type spirit with no additional effects. It cannot be paired with any support spirits but has somewhat higher stats to compensate for this. Its spirit battle involves fighting against three invisible King Dededes who continuously use the Gordo Throw move on the Green Greens stage.
