Magolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler is an Extra Mode that appears in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, which is unlocked after the Story Mode is complete. In it, the player plays as Magolor, who has been stranded deep within Another Dimension and has lost most of his magical powers, gaining a ragged monochrome look in the process. Throughout this adventure, Magolor can defeat enemies to gain Magic Points, which he can then use to upgrade his magical abilities. He can also find Fruit Fragments to unlock new skills and attacks. Along the way, Magolor travels through more than 20 stages and fights a series of powerful elemental bosses, most of which are different variants of bosses from the Main Mode, with the goal being to eventually open a portal to leave this dreary set of dimensions. Like with the Main Mode, Magolor Epilogue can be played with up to four players, though everyone plays as differently-colored Magolors.

As a result of his defeat at the hands of Kirby and friends, Magolor has been banished to the deepest depths of Another Dimension and stripped of most of his powers. Unbeknownst to him, the Master Crown's remnants have also followed him. When Magolor wakes up, he finds himself significantly weakened. After he scouts the new area for a bit and defeats an ambush of enemies, Magolor is able to recover a Fruit Fragment, which restores a bit of his magic.

The fragment teleports Magolor to an ominous place called the Ethereal Altar, where it lights one of five torches, thus setting Magolor's goal in action: to reclaim all of the Fruit Fragments and recover the full power of his magic. Magolor explores four distinct dimensions, where he finds more Fruit Fragments by defeating elemental bosses. After all five torches at the Ethereal Altar are lit, the fragments merge to form a familiar-looking red fruit — but before Magolor can retrieve it, the remnants of the Master Crown coalesce into Crowned Doomer, which consumes the fruit. Magolor destroys this Doomer, but with the Ethereal Altar in ruins, the Master Crown once again emerges and possesses the red fruit to form a demonic tree. After Magolor weakens the crown, he pulls out a sword from the rubble and transforms it into his own Ultra Sword, atoning for his misdeeds and seemingly destroying the crown for good.

With a small sapling left from the tree's defeat, Magolor comes across a dimensional rift that allows him to escape this dimension. The rift sends him and the sapling to a parallel universe, which also changes Magolor's outfit to a new one consisting of green and white. When Magolor comes across a castle town, he plants the sapling in the town square, allowing it to begin growing into a fruit-bearing tree. Finally, he sets up shop, happily starting a new life in this alternate world for a time. It is implied through some of Magolor's extra dialogue in Extra Mode that later, after the events of the Team Kirby Clash games, Magolor would use the capital he earned from the shop to return to Popstar and build Merry Magoland.

Overview

When starting out in Magolor Epilogue, Magolor is very weak, able to only hover a short distance off the ground and fire a short range magic pulse to defend himself with. By the end, he will be wielding seriously powerful magic again.

Magolor's goal throughout this mode is to recover his lost power and eventually find his way home. As such, all of the stages in Magolor Epilogue take place in disparate dimensions, similar to the stages in Heroes in Another Dimension from Kirby Star Allies.

There are 19 main stages across the four dimensions comprising the Magolor Epilogue, along with 12 Ordeal Door stages, each one testing one of Magolor's Magical Skills, plus two bonus ones, which must be unlocked. Most of the main stages keep score in the form of Magic Points, which are earned by defeating enemies or finding them in various places in stages. Additional Magic Points may be earned by scoring "combos" on enemies, with each additional hit adding one count to the combo. At the end of each stage, the game will present the total number of Magic Points earned. If applicable, the game awards a medal based on the result, similar to the scoring system for stages in Kirby's Epic Yarn and Kirby and the Rainbow Curse. Once Magolor gains enough Magic Points, he can spend them from the "Magolor's Magical Skills" menu to upgrade his abilities. If he wants to learn new skills and attacks, he needs to find the Fruit Fragments scattered around the realms, which are collected from bosses in a similar way to the ship parts of the Lor Starcutter in the Main Mode. Collecting the Fruit Fragments from all four dimensions unlocks the final stage, accessible from the Ethereal Altar.

In terms of enemies, Magolor fights the standard enemies from the Main Mode, with the notable addition of the Darpas, Dippas, Dupas, and Deppas from Another Dimension, and other enemies bearing their Halcandran designs. There are, however, a number of distinct bosses based on bosses from the main story, as well as a new final boss:

• Electricky Dooter - a version of Mr. Dooter dressed as a wizard who uses lightning attacks.
• Fiery Puffer - a version of Fatty Puffer with horns who uses fiery attacks.
• Hydriath - a version of Goriath with a fishtail and hair made of water who uses watery attacks.
• Rampaging Doomers - a group of four Sphere Doomers with horns made out of Energy Sphere gears.
• Crowned Doomer - a version of Grand Doomer powered up by the shards of the Master Crown and a red fruit.
• Master Crown - a manifestation of the Master Crown itself, taking the form of a large, gnarled tree by consuming the red fruit.

Areas and stages

The main hub of Magolor Epilogue is subdivided into five "areas", four of which are named dimensions and the last of which is the Ethereal Altar. These areas are analogous to levels in the Main Mode, though here a singular hub connects the entry points to stages from all levels. As Magolor clears each stage, he can progressively unlock more and more of the hub by dispelling obscuring clouds and gaining new skills that allow him to traverse certain barriers. Upgrading certain skills like Levitation is necessary to access certain stages, as well as obtain some hidden Magic Points in the hub itself. Each dimension has up to four numbered stages, a boss stage, and at least three extra stages. The stages are as follows:

• In the Japanese, English, Korean, and Chinese versions, the first letters of every area's unique name (with "Ethereal Altar" at the end) spell out "APPLE", referencing the Fruit Fragments becoming a Gem Apple sprout. Some liberties do need to be taken in the case of the Japanese, Korean, and Chinese versions in constructing this initialism:
  • The Japanese and Korean names for Aerogree Dimension technically have romanizations starting in E but start with transliterations of the English word "air" and therefore would be understood as "starting" with A.
  • The Chinese name of Poseiblu Dimension technically starts with B when romanized using pinyin, but nonetheless refers to Poseidon and would be understood as "starting" with P.
  • Due to the fact that "L" and "R" sounds do not occur in the same way in Japanese or Korean as in English, the Japanese and Korean equivalents to "Locandra" have romanizations starting with R but could easily be understood as "starting" with L.
• In the German version, the first letters of the areas spell out "APFEL", which translates to "apple" in German.
• In the Spanish and Brazilian Portuguese versions, the first letters of the areas spell out "FRUTA", which translates to "fruit" in both Spanish and Portuguese.
• In the French versions, the first letters of the areas spell out "POMME", which translates to "apple" in French.
• In the Italian version, the first letters of the areas spell out "FRUTTA", which translates to "fruit" in Italian. Both letters in "Dimensione Terra-Aere" (Ethereal Altar) are used to make this initialism work.
• In the Dutch version, the first letters of the areas spell out "APPEL", which translates to "apple" in Dutch.

Trivia

• In a Miiverse post about Dedede's Drum Dash Deluxe, series director Shinya Kumazaki appears to have hinted at the premise of this mode. When talking about Magolor's role in the game, he said, "Magolor’s whereabouts are uncertain after Kirby’s Return to Dream Land, but he seems pretty lively here. After roaming around the dimension beyond space and time, he might’ve found an exit."
  • Likewise, Kumazaki had previously stated in the July 2017 issue of Nintendo DREAM that Magolor from Team Kirby Clash Deluxe is the same person as Magolor from the main series, which is explicitly confirmed in the ending of this mode.
• The Japanese subtitle for Magolor Epilogue, 異空イクウをかける旅人タビビト (ikū wo kakeru tabibito, "The Traveler Across Another Dimension"), is the same as the Japanese name of Distant Traveler, the final stage of Dedede's Drum Dash, though the katakana and hiragana are flipped (異空いくうヲカケル旅人たびびと). Likewise, the Korean subtitle for the epilogue is also identical to the Distant Traveler stage name from Dedede's Drum Dash. Consequently, the song "Distant Traveler" had its name retranslated to "Interdimensional Traveler".
• Interestingly, the opening cutscene shows Magolor Soul when flashing back to Magolor's defeat rather than his Story Mode form, even though Magolor Epilogue can be played before clearing Extra Mode.
• This mode does not contain any water. Its absence is most notable in the Extra Stage, which modifies areas that originally had water in the main game to remove it.
