- This article is about the large gorilla-like boss from Kirby's Return to Dream Land, and should not be confused with Gorimondo.
“ | The snowy mountains are Goriath's home. When this powerful brawler gets mad, he won't calm down...but you'll have to battle him anyway, because a ship part is hiding in his lair! Go get it! | ” | — VS Goriath Special Page in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe |
Goriath is a yeti-like boss that appears in Kirby's Return to Dream Land and its remake—Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe. He appears as the boss of White Wafers and guards the Lor Starcutter's Emblem. Most of his attacks are direct melee attacks, such as punches and stomps, though he will also climb the walls and throw objects such as snowballs, or shoot beams from his hand (similar to Fighter Kirby).
The name "Goriath" is a portmanteau of the words "gorilla" and "Goliath". Despite this, he really isn't that large, especially compared to Kirby's height of only eight inches.
Characteristics
Goriath's body is somewhat pear-shaped, his face taking up most of it. This makes his physique similar to a Waddle Dee, though his feet and arms are more defined. His fur covers his body, which is largely white in tone (much like the Japanese snow monkey), though it has red, spiky accents near the hands. His skin is tan, and his face resembles that of an ape, with baboon-like red marks on his cheeks. He also sports a long beard and a similarly long tuft of hair on his head, which is gray in color.
When Goriath is knocked down to half health, he charges up and his beard and hair tuft turn golden. He also begins to glow and his eyes turn red.
In Extra Mode, Goriath's skin is dark gray, his eyes are white, his face marks are of several colors (ranging from blue to lavender), his hair tuft and beard have a blue tint at first, and his wrist hair is brown. These changes cause him to more closely resemble a mandrill.
Game appearances
Kirby's Return to Dream Land / Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe
In Kirby's Return to Dream Land and Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, when Kirby enters the arena Goriath is fought in, the big ape jumps down from the sky. He beats down upon the ground, causing the stage to crumble beneath his mighty blows.
Goriath has a unique feature to his boss fight, in that, as the fight progresses, he will pound the stage with his fists to make it crumble, causing everyone to fall to a lower stage with a different layout. This is done up to four times before the fight is over.
The following lists all of Goriath's attacks in the Main Mode of Kirby's Return to Dream Land and Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe. Attacks in italics are used in the second phase of the fight only. Most attack names are derived from official Japanese strategy guides, while others are conjectural.
Attacks - Main Mode | |
---|---|
Attack | Description |
Wall Jump[conjectural title] | Goriath climbs a wall, then jumps back and forth between them. He may jump off the wall to pound the ground, creating stars.
|
雪玉&氷塊 Snowballs & Ice |
While on a wall, Goriath tosses snowballs at Kirby, which can be swallowed for the Ice Copy Ability. In the second phase, he may also throw spiked ice balls with a different trajectory.
|
グルグルパンチ Spinning Punch |
On the ground, Goriath charges up a punch, then extends his arm all the way across the stage in an impressive feat of flexibility aimed at Kirby. A star appears where the punch lands.
|
ヒップアタック Hip Attack |
While on a wall, Goriath may charge up and then jump off the wall to pound the ground, leaving behind stars.
|
ブリザードはどう Force Blizzard |
Goriath forms and fires a series of energy blasts, shooting three at different angles. Each one creates a star when it impacts the wall.
|
連続バウンドロケット Consecutive Bound Rocket |
Goriath charges up on a wall, then starts rapidly ricocheting between the two walls. After a few collisons, he will then ricochet towards Kirby's current position, creating stars wherever he lands.
|
ツララ落とし Icicle Drop |
Goriath pounds the ground, making icicles appear mysteriously from above to fall. These can also be swallowed for the Ice ability.
|
“ | Goriath EX is the king of the forever-frosty mountains. His strong arms can create a Force Blizzard, and his fists attack with winding punches! Where did he learn such fierce fighting moves?! | ” | — VS Goriath EX Special Page in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe |
In Extra Mode, Goriath's attacks are generally more punishing, and he sports a couple new ones as well:

|
When Goriath is defeated, he reverts to his look before the second phase and gets knocked into the background, where he cartoonishly falls to his doom.
Role in Merry Magoland
Exclusively in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, after Goriath is defeated in Story Mode, he will appear in Merry Magoland the next time Kirby visits it, hanging off the side of the main castle toward the left, and chatting with some nearby Waddle Dees. Two Dress-Up Masks based on Goriath's regular and EX forms can be worn, provided the player has defeated him in both Story Mode and Extra Mode, respectively.
Cameo appearances
“ | This hat is designed to look like a mighty ape who lives in icy heights. | ” | — Goriath Hat description from Kirby Battle Royale |
In Kirby Battle Royale, one of the pieces of Headgear for the Fighter ability is a hat that is based on Goriath, named the Goriath Hat, and costs 3000 Battle Coins. The same hat returns in Kirby Fighters 2, where it is unlocked at a Fighters Rank of 85. The hat itself resembles Goriath's appearance during the second phase of his boss battle in Kirby's Return to Dream Land.
Trivia
- When Goriath's health drops below the half-way point, his hair turns golden and he begins to glow, and he's able to fire beams from his hand. This could be a vague nod to the Dragon Ball anime series.
- In Kirby and the Forgotten Land, the boss Gorimondo reuses many of Goriath's sound effects in battle, in addition to their similar names.
