Ninja Dojo is a Sub-Game played in Kirby's Return to Dream Land and Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe. The object of Ninja Dojo is to throw ninja stars with good timing at moving targets by flicking the Wii Remote in the original version, or flicking the Joy-Con or pressing A/B in the Deluxe version. The game can be played by Kirby alone, or with up to three other players. who can play as a different colored Kirby, Meta Knight, Bandana Waddle Dee or King Dedede. As part of the theme, all the characters are dressed as Ninjas.

In Kirby's Return to Dream Land, Ninja Dojo is unlocked by obtaining 15 Energy Spheres, and is then accessible from the main menu or from within the Lor Starcutter. In Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Ninja Dojo is available in Merry Magoland instead.

Gameplay

Ninja Dojo has three difficulty levels, with lower difficulties featuring fewer rounds than higher ones, and higher levels being unlocked by clearing lower ones. Targets in the game generally simply move across the screen at earlier targets and levels, but as the game progresses, more difficult and tricky targets appear, such as targets that spin/bounce with dud targets, targets hanging off of a parasol, targets blocked by Gordos, disappearing/reappearing targets, different sized targets, among other tricks. The game is scored based on the distance away from the center of the target: the center of the target is awarded 100 base points, while the absolute edge of the target would be 1 base point. If the target goes in the yellow bull's-eye in the middle (usually requiring 80-85 base points on normal sized targets), 30 bonus points are awarded. Every consecutive bulls-eye yields 30 more bonus points on top: for instance, the second consecutive bulls-eye will yield 60 bonus points added to the base score, third will yield 90, etc. In multiplayer games, there is additional bonus if all other players miss entirely (50 points). If all players miss the target entirely, the game is over.

Rounds by difficulty

The following tables list each round of each difficulty in Ninja Dojo. Note that the types of patterns that can appear in each round are partially randomized.

Level ★ rounds
Round Description Notes
1 A large target flies in slowly from the left and stops briefly in the center before going off to the right.
2 A large target flies in slowly horizontally and keeps moving until it leaves. The target can come in from the left or the right.
3 A large target flies in at moderate speed horizontally and keeps moving until it leaves. The target can come in from the left or the right.
4 One of two patterns can happen in this round, as follows:
  • A large target flies in slowly from the top and keeps moving until it leaves to the bottom.
  • A medium-sized target bounces at moderate pace across the screen.
The bouncing target can come in from the left or the right.
5 One of two patterns can happen in this round, as follows:
  • A wheel made of five decoys and one target rolls across the screen.
  • A medium-sized target comes gently swaying downward from above attached to a parasol, swinging back and forth like a pendulum.
The wheel pattern has three variants:
  • It can come in from the left
  • It can come in from the right
  • It can pop up near the right and spin slowly for a moment while holding position before flying upward.

Level ★★

Level ★★
Bouncing targets and decoys will appear. See if you can hit all seven targets!
— In-game description of Level ★★

This level cannot be played until completing Level ★. There are seven rounds in Level ★★, as follows:

Level ★★ rounds
Round Description Notes
1 A large target flies in quickly from the left and stops briefly in the center before going off to the right.
2 A medium-sized target bounces across the screen. The target can bounce in from the left or the right.
3 One of two patterns can happen in this round, as follows:
  • A large target flies in slowly from the top and keeps moving until it leaves to the bottom.
  • A large target flies at moderate pace horizontally across the screen.
The horizontal target can fly in from the left or the right.
4 A crowd of decoys of various sizes bounce across the screen. One of the last ones is the target. These can bounce in from the left or the right, and may consist of a line of six or a cluttered larger amount. The target will be any one of the last three in the crowd.
5 A grid of large decoys flies across the screen in various ways. The target can be found in the grid near the end of the flight. Variants are as follows:
  • The grid may pass in a straight diagonal line from the upper-right or lower-left.
  • The grid may spin across the screen in clockwise or counterclockwise manner.
  • The grid may alternate between moving in a straight diagonal line and rotating clockwise or counterclockwise.
6 A medium-sized target bounces across the screen. Variants are as follows:
  • The target may bounce from the left or the right.
  • The target might travel quickly across the screen or bounce very high while traveling slowly.
  • There may be two wooden walls placed on the left and right sides of the screen to partially obscure the view.
7 A snake-like line of decoys flies across the screen in varying patterns, consisting of five small decoys in front followed by a medium-sized target at the end. Variants are as follows:
  • The line may sidewind across the screen, traveling in three horizontal lines or five vertical ones and either from the left or right.
  • The line may glide smoothly in a single looping pattern, traveling either leftward or rightward.
  • The line may travel in a corkscrew-like path from the bottom or the top.

Level ★★★

Level ★★★
A true test of ninja skill and concentration. Test your mettle against ten tough targets!
— In-game description of Level ★★★

This level cannot be played until completing Level ★★. There are ten rounds in Level ★★★, as follows:

Level ★★★ rounds
Round Description Notes
1 A large target flies slowly horizontally across the screen. The target can fly in from the left or the right.
2 One of two patterns can happen in this round, as follows:
  • A wheel made of five decoys and one target rolls across the screen.
  • A medium-sized target comes gently swaying downward from above attached to a parasol, swinging back and forth like a pendulum.
The wheel pattern has three variants:
  • It can come in from the left
  • It can come in from the right
  • It can pop up near the right and spin slowly for a moment while holding position before flying upward.
3 One of three patterns can happen in this round, as follows:
  • A medium-sized target comes gently swaying downward from above attached to a parasol, swinging back and forth like a pendulum.
  • A medium-sized target comes swaying diagonally downward attached to a parasol.
  • A target bounces across the screen.
Variants are as follows:
  • For the diagonally-falling parasol target, it can fly in from the upper-left, or upper-right.
  • For the bouncing target, it can come from the left or the right, and may fly across quickly, or move slowly as it bounces very high.

If the second round involved a Parasol, this round will not use one.

4 A large target flies in a straight path across the screen, along with a handful of Gordos that will block any ninja stars thrown at them. The target and Gordos will either travel from the left, the right, or the top.
5 A crowd of decoys of various sizes bounce across the screen. One of the last ones is the target. These can bounce in from the left or the right, and may consist of a line of six or a cluttered larger amount. The target will be any one of the last three in the crowd.
6 One of four patterns can happen in this round, as follows:
  • A medium-sized target blinks in and out as it travels across the screen in discrete distances, only popping in the center once.
  • A large target comes flying in and traveling along the bottom. It stops and bounces upward off-center a few times, and then bounces one more time in the center.
  • A large decoy comes flying in, slowly passing across the center, then stopping and traveling backwards, then flipping over to reveal a target after reversing direction again.
  • Five decoys come flying in, forming an x pattern on the screen. One flips over to reveal itself as a target before flipping back to swap positions with the decoys up to five times.
Variants are as follows:
  • For the blinking target, its path can vary in its starting position, but it sidewinds in the same sort of manner.
  • For the bouncing target, it can bounce off-center two or three times before bouncing in the center.
  • For the target moving back and forth, it may initially come in from the left or the right.
  • For the x-formation, any time after the first can place the target in the center.
7 A sequence of decoys travels across the screen, one at a time, stopping briefly in the middle as they move. One of these turns to reveal itself as the target. The targets can come flying in from the left, the right, or the top. The number of decoys that pass before the target can range from three to eight.
8 A snake-like line of decoys flies across the screen in varying patterns, consisting of four or five small decoys in front followed by a medium-sized target at the end. Variants are as follows:
  • The line may sidewind across the screen, traveling in three horizontal lines or five vertical ones and either from the left or right.
  • The line may come flying in from the bottom-right or bottom-left, traveling diagonally upward slowly, then making a sharp turn and flying quickly through the center before leaving.
  • The line may come flying in from the top-left or top-right, traveling in straight diagonal lines and bouncing off the edges of the screen before passing through the center.
  • The line may come flying in from the top-left or top-right, traveling along the center before flipping in the opposite corner and passing over again, revealing the target on this second pass before flying off-screen.
9 One of four patterns can happen in this round, as follows:
  • A very small target flies quickly horizontally across the screen.
  • A medium-size target bounces across the screen.
  • A large target flies very quickly into the center, where it stops for a brief moment before flying off again.
  • A giant target covering the whole screen flies quickly across the screen from above.
Variants are as follows:
  • The small target may come from the left or the right.
  • The bouncing target may come from the left or the right.
  • The bouncing target may travel very quickly with a lower bounce, or travel more slowly with much higher bounces.
  • The large target may come from the left or the right.
10 One of two patterns can happen in this round, as follows:
  • A large target flies in slowly across the screen in a straight line. As it travels, a shield of Gordos swoops in and out, which will block any ninja stars thrown at them.
  • A large target flies in, then opens up to reveal a smaller target behind it, which in turn opens up. This sequence happens five times in succession, leaving only a very small target passing through the center.
The target with the Gordo shield may approach from the left, the right, or the top.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe

This article or section is under construction. Therefore, please excuse its informal appearance while it's being worked on. We hope to have it completed as soon as possible.
Reason: Gonna need a new set of tables for this. --Samwell (talk) 21:56, 9 February 2023 (UTC)

Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe features a different set of difficulty levels, with some different target rounds than in the original game. The most notable addition is of Magolor in a ninja outfit, who occasionally appears along with the targets, though he is purely there for aesthetic purposes.

Apprentice (Level 1)

The Apprentice level has three rounds, as follows:

Apprentice rounds
Round Description Notes
1 A large target flies in slowly from the left and stops briefly in the center before going off to the right.
2 One of three patterns can happen in this round, as follows:
  • A large target flies in horizontally and keeps moving until it leaves. It can come in from the left or the right.
  • A wheel of targets appears and spins in place until the non-dud target passes by.
  • A target comes bouncing by from the right and moves across the screen.
3 One of two patterns can happen in this round, as follows:
  • A wheel of targets appears and rolls along the stage from right to left, with only one being the proper target.
  • A target comes bouncing by from the left and moves across the screen.
Ninja Magolor will appear during this round.

Warrior (Level 2)

The Warrior level has five rounds, as follows:

Warrior rounds
Round Description Notes
1 A large target flies in quickly from the left and stops briefly in the center before going off to the right.
2 One of 4 patterns can happen in this round, as follows:
  • A target bounces along from either the left or the right, doing a single large bounce.
  • A bunch of targets come bouncing in from the right, with the last one being the real target.
  • A target comes swinging down suspended on a Magolor-styled parachute, swaying back-and-forth a few times before being dropped at the center.
  • A target flies straight across the screen without stopping, coming from left, right, or above.
3 One of 4 patterns can happen in this round, as follows:
  • A bunch of targets come bouncing in from the right, with either the last or third-to-last one being the real target.
  • A target comes swinging down suspended on a Magolor-styled parachute, swaying back-and-forth a few times before being dropped at the center.
  • A target bounces along from either the left or the right.
  • A target comes in along the bottom, first bouncing straight up from the left, then doing it again at the right, then finally doing one in the middle before leaving.
Ninja Magolor may appear during any of these rounds.
4 One of 7 patterns can happen in this round, as follows:
  • A target bounces along from either the left or the right.
  • A bunch of targets come bouncing in from the right, with either the last or third-to-last one being the real target.
  • A target comes bouncing in from the left or right, bounding very high before falling quickly through the center.
  • A large field of targets comes flying in on a straight path, with the real target being among them near the end.
  • A large field of targets comes flying in. While they pass, they pivot four times before the real target is in hitting range, then they fly off.
  • Some walls appear on the left and right sides. After this, a target comes bouncing by from the left or right.
  • A target flies in very fast, and stops for just a moment before leaving again.
5 One of 3 patterns can happen in this round, as follows:
  • A line of four targets snakes along the screen, starting either at the top or the bottom and passing through the middle after turning, before turning again and leaving the screen. The target at the end is the real one.
  • Five targets come flying in from the left or right, doing a loop in the air before flying down the middle. The last and biggest target is the real one.
  • A line of six targets comes spiraling in, finishing by flying up through the middle. The last and biggest target is the real one.

Master (Level 3)

The Master level has ten rounds.

Missions

In Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, there are a number of Missions associated with Ninja Dojo. As of the demo, only three missions are known as of now. They are as follows:
