Air Ride: Frozen Hillside is a theme that starts in D minor. It consists of instruments, such as bells, to give the theme a wintry feel. For a short time in the song, it goes to D major. This part has a beautiful and hopeful tone to it. After this portion, the key signature goes back to its minor counterpart, and has a descending call and response section (that repeats twice), and the song loops.

"Air Ride: Frozen Hillside" (capitalized as "Air Ride: FROZEN HILLSIDE" in the Sound Test, and occasionally simply called "Frozen Hillside") is a theme that originated from the Japanese version of Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, before appearing in the Kirby games starting with Kirby Air Ride. It can be heard in the race track of the same name, and was composed by Shogo Sakai.

Composition

Sliding on a frozen slope.

Game appearances

Kirby Air Ride

This theme originates from the frosty track of the same name. It can be unlocked by completing a race in this track under 58 seconds.

Kirby Mass Attack

In Kirby Mass Attack, two new remixes appear. The first remix, named "Ruins at Night", plays in Sandy Canyon - Stage 8, though it only arranges the second part. The other one, named "Icy Realm", is heard in the ninth stage of Dedede Resort when the Kirbys are being chased by Freezy Rex.

Super Smash Bros. series

This track appears in the Super Smash Bros. series from Super Smash Bros. Brawl and onward, known simply as "Frozen Hillside". In all its appearances, it is unchanged from its original arrangement in Kirby Air Ride.

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, "Frozen Hillside" plays in the Halberd stage, as well as in the Subspace Emissary level The Glacial Peak and its equivalent area in The Great Maze.

In order for this track to have a chance of playing on the Halberd stage and appear in the Sound Test, it needs to be unlocked by playing 10 matches on the stage. Once this is done, the CD item representing this track will appear and can be collected.

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U

In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, "Frozen Hillside" is an unlockable track that plays in The Great Cave Offensive stage, randomly obtained from a CD item.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, "Frozen Hillside" can play on any Kirby-themed stage or can be assigned to Battlefield, Big Battlefield, Small Battlefield and Final Destination.

Other appearances

Part of this theme can briefly be heard in the Japanese dub of Kirby: Right Back at Ya! in the episode "A Chow Challenge". Interestingly, this episode premiered a month before Kirby Air Ride came out, making this the first appearance of the theme.

This theme was included on the Kirby's Airride Business trip Sound Test and The Very Best of Kirby: 52 Hit Tracks.

"Air Ride: Frozen Hillside" was rearranged in Kirby Memorial Arrangements album as part of the "Driving Star" medley, alongside "Menu" and "Top Ride: Water". This remix was done by Megumi Ohara.

The theme also received a Christmas-themed remix in The Sound of Kirby Café 2, being present in the track 聖夜のシュガーホワイト (Sugar White Holy Night), with "Snowball Scuffle". It was arranged by the original composer, Shogo Sakai.
