“ | A new festival of battle is about to begin! Test your limits with…The Ultimate Choice! Kirby and friends will face off against a gaggle of super-spicy bosses in their unending quest to gobble up everything in sight! | ” | — Kirby Star Allies quote |
The Ultimate Choice is a Sub-Game present in Kirby Star Allies, unlocked once the Story Mode is completed. It is a Boss Endurance game similar to The Arena, though it has two key differences; having a scoring system and difficulty levels. As such, it can be seen as effectively nine different Arenas rolled into a single game. Completing this mode on the Soul Melter difficulty setting is required for 100% Completion of Kirby Star Allies.
Overview
The Ultimate Choice is split up into 9 difficulty levels (represented as spiciness levels). Only the first five are available at first, with the other four unlocked after meeting certain criteria. A high score is kept for this mode, with generally higher scores being awarded for higher difficulties.
Before starting the game, the unknown reader must choose how many human players will play:
- 1 human player is in Solo Rank category;
- 2-4 human players are in With Friends Rank category.
The more players in play (including CPU), the less damage they will deal to mid-bosses and bosses. The Ultimate Choice has a different set of multiplayer modifiers than Story Mode, Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go! or Heroes in Another Dimension.
Number of Players | Attack Modifier in The Ultimate Choice[1] |
---|---|
1 | ×1.0 |
2 | ×0.875 (7/8) |
3 | ×0.8 (4/5) |
4 | ×0.75 (3/4) |
Then, 1P chooses a Copy Ability for Kirby (or press X to choose the Friend Helper of that ability), and (if desired) chooses up to 3 Friend Helpers as the rest players to accompany 1P through the whole run. After completing The Ultimate Choice once, Dream Friends can also be chosen as any player.
After character select, the unknown reader chooses the difficulty level. Most bosses have a fixed health regardless of difficulty.
During the boss battles, 2P, 3P and 4P cannot be permanently defeated, Unfriended, or swallowed for their ability (if any). Fainted allies who are still in the stage will revive with minimal health if left unconscious at the end of a battle (or if thrown off the stage while the boss is shifting phases). If fainted allies are not revived in time and disappear midbattle, they will revive with half health in the rest area.
In-between battles, the unknown reader can use a limited supply of healing food if needed, and can also pick up Picture Pieces from chests. On higher difficulties, more pieces can be collected, but there will be less food. Before the final round, an additional food item can be found inside the last chest.
amiibo can be used to obtain extra food in this mode, but doing so will mark the score as having been achieved using amiibo.
Difficulty
The base game has 8 difficulty levels: the first five available at start and the last three unlockable.
Version 4.0.0 adds Soul Melter EX, which is unlocked by clearing both Soul Melter and Heroes in Another Dimension. To select Soul Melter EX, the unknown reader should press ↑ + A + - when Soul Melter is selected (the same command to enable Kirby's Dream Land - Extra Mode). Soul Melter EX incorporates the bosses from Heroes in Another Dimension.
The following lists every difficulty in The Ultimate Choice, with information on the boss battles, how many healing items are given, and other factors:
Player Health
The maximum health of all players varies between difficulty levels:
- 1-4 (Sweet Breeze - Spicy Adventure): 100%
- 5-7 (Sizzling Threat - Inferno Crisis): 80%
- Secret (Soul Melter): 60%
- Secret (Soul Melter EX): 100%
Friend Helpers have the same power as Kirby's respective Copy Abilities. In addition, they usually have better jumping/hovering ability than Kirby's hover. However, most of them have lower health than Kirby.

Scoring
In each difficulty mode, a score is kept. This score is based on the defeated boss phases (score varies in difficulty) and time bonuses (how quickly Kirby and his allies defeat bosses). The score decreases by 1000 every time 1P is KO'd in the multiplayer mode, however.

Time Bonus
Time bonus = base value1 - (defeat time2 × 10)
1 The base value is 3000, except for the following bosses:
- Void Termina (Inferno Crisis) - 5000
- Void Termina & Void Soul (Soul Melter) - 7000
- Void Termina - True Destroyer of Worlds & Void - Astral Birth (Soul Melter EX) - 70000
2 Unit: second; rounded down to one decimal place.
Differences from Main Modes
- Cook, Crash, Festival, Mike and Sleep abilities are unavailable for Kirby to choose on the menu. (Normal Kirby can still obtain the Festival ability from the golden cherries of Yggy Woods.)
- Chef Kawasaki is the only playable character of the Cook ability on the menu. (Normal Kirby can still obtain the ability from the Chef Kawasaki mid-boss.)
- Chef Kawasaki's cooldown time is increased from 60 seconds in main modes to 150 seconds in the Ultimate Choice.
- Artist Kirby cannot use Painbrush (unless Normal Kirby obtains the ability from the Vividria mid-boss).
- Fullscreen attacks like Chef Kawasaki's Souper Supper and The Three Mage-Sisters's Sister Circle do more damage with more allies. (In other modes, it does fixed damage regardless of the number of allies.)
- To prevent overuse, in the rest area, Chef Kawasaki's Cook Pot / Souper Supper, Artist's Still Life / Adeleine & Ribbon's Al Fresco, and The Three Mage-Sisters's Sister Circle do nothing, and their cooldown timer freezes.
- Hammer Kirby can use Hammer Throw unlimitedly without losing the ability.
- Grand Mam is not fought in any difficulty. This is due to the fact that Grand Mam must be defeated with at least two Copy Abilities - Fire and a slash-property ability (e.g. Cutter, Ninja, Sword).
- Bosses in The Ultimate Choice have lower health than their counterparts in Story Mode, Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go! and Heroes in Another Dimension, except for Void Termina in Soul Melter (EX).
- Kirby's Blaster Bullet (a Star Bullet formed by inhaling at least 2 objects) does increased damage in Soul Melter EX (and Heroes in Another Dimension) than other difficulty levels or modes.
- The Star Allies Sparkler can be piloted solo vs Void Termina.
Music
Title Track
The title track of The Ultimate Choice is composed by Yuuta Ogasawara and titled お好み究極チョイス味[2] (What-You-Like Ultimate Choice Flavor). It can be found as Track 198 in the Jukebox.
This track is a remix of "Green Greens" in a heavy metal and oriental fashion, to express the theme of spiciness (the difficulty levels).
Legacy Tracks
Several classic tunes from previous Kirby games appear in the Ultimate Choice, many of them only in Soul Melter (EX).

Trivia
- When Soul Melter is unlocked, the Ultimate Choice menu icon will turn dark red.
- On the title screen, red chilli peppers are falling down in the background. On occasion, a green chilli pepper may fall down as well.
- Chef Kawasaki is the only playable mid-boss who has lower health than Kirby. Interestingly, enemy Chef Kawasaki and Mr. Frosty have lower health than the rest three mid-bosses, too.
- Chef kawasaki is the only mid-boss who doesn't have a twin battle in the Ultimate Choice.
- The difficulty scale used in this game is similar to the Intensity meters present in Kid Icarus: Uprising and Classic Mode in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
- The face Kirby makes when Soul Melter is selected is a reference to Devil Kirby from Kirby: Right Back at Ya! Episode 95: "Devil Kirby" (JP) / "Frog Wild" (EN), which Kirby becomes after being possessed by a monster called the Demon Frog.
- The face Kirby makes when Soul Melter EX is selected is similar to that of Void Termina's Final Core / Void Soul. He also adds four bottles of hot sauce instead of one.
- The timer has slightly changed in Version 4.0.0. Now it doesn't run when the boss hasn't entered the battle, e.g. when King Dedede is eating, and when Meta Knight is on the cliff.
- In Soul Melter, King Dedede is fought at night instead of sunset. This is the opposite in Kirby's Dream Land 3's Boss Butch in which King Dedede is fought at sunset instead of night.
- Characters who have completed the sub-game are crowned on the character select menu (yellow crown for Difficulty 1-7; red crown for Soul Melter; green crown for Soul Melter EX). If every character has completed the sub-game (regardless of difficulty), a special message will pop up to congratulate the achievement.
- The lowest score is 11500 on Sweet Breeze difficulty in multiplayer mode: 1500 from defeating Meta Knight's second phase and 10000 from Sweet Breeze Clear Bonus; 1P has to be KO'd multiple times until the score is depleted to zero before defeating Meta Knight's first phase; at least 5 minutes must be spent before finishing off Meta Knight so that the time bonus runs out.
- Goldon & Silvox have increased health in Soul Melter EX than in the lower difficulty levels.
- Void Soul's attack order has changed in Version 4.0.0.
- Among the four parallel bosses from Heroes in Another Dimension, Parallel Dedede gives higher scores than the other three in Soul Melter EX.
- The score for defeating Void - Astral Birth, 86555, is a pun on "HAL GO GO GO" in Japanese. This score also appears as the highest score of the secret stage "C-R-O-W-N-E-D (Reprise)" in Dedede's Drum Dash Deluxe.
- Clearing Soul Melter EX once unlocks the 'classic' look for Kirby. However, the high score ranking doesn't remember whether the unknown reader cleared The Ultimate Choice as 'modern' or 'classic' Kirby as the icon will switch to the enabled one.
- Nintendo Switch Kirby Star Allies Channel Article #22 mentioned that the score can reach 700,000 if Soul Melter EX is cleared fast enough. To reach 700,000, Soul Melter EX has to be cleared under 20:55.40. Meanwhile, it's impossible to reach 710,000 because that requires Soul Melter EX to be cleared under 04:15.40.
