An Area Patch is a special item in Kirby's Epic Yarn and Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn which is used to open all stages beyond the first in each land. The majority of patches are earned simply by completing stages, though the patches to extra levels can only be obtained by collecting enough bead points in the appropriate prior stages (usually Boss stages). There are six area patches in each land, except for Quilty Square, which has none.
Each patch, when used, causes a unique animation to play on the level map in order to unlock its respective stage. | Each patch, when used, causes a unique animation to play on the level map in order to unlock its respective stage.

“ | Clearing a stage will earn you a new Area Patch. While holding this patch, press 1 on the Area screen to open a new stage! These patches must be used in the same area in which they were earned. You can also earn a bonus Area patch by clearing a boss stage with a certain number of beads. | ” | — Kirby's Epic Yarn Instruction Manual, page 16 |
