Food refers to items in the Kirby series that restore the health of Kirby or one of his friends. Food has appeared in nearly every Kirby game, as well as the Super Smash Bros. games. It can be found lying on the ground or in Treasure Chests, drop from defeated enemies in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror and Kirby's Return to Dream Land onward, or produced by utilizing Copy Abilities such as Cook, Magic, Artist or the Ice-Spark Power Combo.

With each major iteration of the Kirby series, more varieties of food items are made available, though they all serve the same function, to restore varying amounts of Kirby's (or one of his friends') health. Additionally, in several multiplayer games since Kirby Super Star it is possible to share food items by performing what is officially called a Face-to-Face, wherein after one character eats a food item, if they quickly touch a friendly character, they will share the food with that character. This is an optimal strategy, as all participants are healed the full amount, as if each one obtained their own food item.

Game appearances[edit]

Kirby's Dream Land[edit]

Only two food items appear in Kirby's Dream Land. They are the Pep Brew, which restores two points of health, and the Bag of Magic Food, which restores all health. While the Superspicy Curry and the Mint Leaf are technically food, they do not recover any health, and instead serve a different function. In the storyline, the reasoning behind why there are scarce food items is because King Dedede stole all the food from Dream Land. Kirby's goal is to get it back, along with the Sparkling Stars.

Whispy Woods drops apples as part of his attack, but these also do not recover health.

Kirby's Adventure[edit]

Much like in Kirby's Dream Land, only the Pep Drink and Maxim Tomato appear as food items.

Kirby's Pinball Land[edit]

In Kirby's Pinball Land, food items do not restore health, as there is no health system in this game. Instead, Energy Drinks and Maxim Tomatoes can be seen at various places on the pinball boards, acting as temporary stopgaps to prevent Kirby from falling into the gutter below.

Kirby's Dream Course[edit]

In Kirby's Dream Course, the only food available are Energy Tomatoes, which are smaller variants of Maxim Tomatoes that are used to measure Kirby's stamina. He starts with 4 on each life, and will lose one each time he makes a shot or collides with a dangerous enemy or hazard. Defeating enemies restores one tomato each, as does entering the cup at the end of a hole.

Kirby's Dream Land 2[edit]

The only Food items which appear in this title are Health Drinks and Maxim Tomatoes. When found, touching Gooey will also restore health.

Kirby's Block Ball[edit]

Food items do not restore health in Kirby's Block Ball. Instead, they are merely worth points when collected.

Kirby Super Star[edit]

This game was the first Kirby game to have more food items than just the Maxim Tomato and the Energy Drink. These food items all heal the same amount of stamina, which is less than the Maxim Tomato.

Collecting food is given greater importance in Gourmet Race, where each piece of food obtained is worth one point.

Kirby's Dream Land 3[edit]

As in Kirby's Dream Land 2, there are only two types of food in this game: Energy Drinks and Maxim Tomatoes. Energy drinks restore two points (one bar) of health, while Maxim Tomatoes restore all of it.

Additionally, Kirby gains one point (half a bar) of health whenever he eats the enemy Apolo. Kirby also gains a bar of health when he inhales and swallows Gooey. Though this is normally offset by how calling Gooey takes a bar away, it can be useful for bringing Kirby back from the brink (especially if Kirby only has one bar of health, as he can call Gooey without losing any health, and then gain an extra bar by eating Gooey).

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards[edit]

In Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, there are relatively few varieties of food when compared to Kirby Super Star and later games in that style. Standard food items always restore 1 bar of Kirby's health, while Maxim Tomatoes restore all of it. Food can be found at various locations in stages and in the Bonus Game, and consist of the following varieties:

  • Tomato
  • Cake
  • Ice Cream Bar
  • Sandwich - This is an onigiri (rice ball) in the Japanese version.
  • Sparerib

Ice-Spark[edit]

The Ice-Spark Power Combo is capable of producing food as well, though the food produced by this ability is different from the items found in stages, as follows:

  • Cheese wedge

Unlike regular food, this projectile food will disappear after a short amount of time, and can be used to attack enemies.

Other[edit]

Aside from these interactable food items, there are a couple others seen in cutscenes or eaten by other characters:

  • Apples - painted by Adeleine and eaten by Kirby in a cutscene.
  • Strawberries - Ribbon resembles a strawberry in a cutscene where Kirby is hallucinating from hunger.
  • Onigiri - eaten by Waddle Dee in cutscenes and during the Bonus Game.

Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble[edit]

There are four different kinds of food in this game, as follows:

  • Power Drink - Restores 1 HP
  • Maxim Tomato - Restores all HP (up to 6 max)
  • Hamburger - Found in the time bonus treasure chest prior to a boss fight, gives Kirby 8 HP (replaced by an onigiri in the Japanese version)

Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land[edit]

All of the food items that can appear in Kirby Air Ride.

In Kirby Air Ride, food can be found in blue boxes or out in the open in the City Trial game mode. Each distinct food item heals Air Ride Machine durability by a slightly different amount, with ice cream and apples healing relatively little, and Maxim Tomatoes providing a complete refill.

While otherwise identical to Cherries, there are also five generic foods exclusively dropped from defeated enemies - either occasionally by chance or by using the Cook or Magic abilities.

In Kirby: Canvas Curse, the only food items that can be found in stages are Energy Drinks (which restore 2 HP) and Maxim Tomatoes (which restore all HP).

Kirby: Squeak Squad[edit]

In Kirby: Squeak Squad, a slice of Strawberry Shortcake is the main plot device of the game's Story Mode, where Kirby must chase the Squeaks in an adventure to get back his shortcake slice from them.

All food items from Kirby & The Amazing Mirror make a return in the game, with some of them found in bubbles that can be stored in the Copy Palette. Food stored in the Copy Palette can be mixed to create a food item that restores more health, like mixing two Cherries to create an Energy Drink.

Kirby Super Star Ultra[edit]

All food items from Kirby Super Star make a return in Kirby Super Star Ultra. In addition, many of these food items make an appearance in the Sub-Game Snack Tracks.

Kirby's Epic Yarn / Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn[edit]

Due to stamina not existing in Kirby's Epic Yarn, there are no food items in stages which restore health. However, food does feature in the game in other ways, as follows:

  • Several Furniture and Fabric items resemble food.
  • Food appears a couple times in cutscenes, mainly in the Treat Land scene.
  • After Kirby consumes the Metamato in the first cutscene, it gives him the ability to transform.

Kirby Star Allies[edit]

In Kirby Star Allies, food items can be obtained in stages by defeating enemies, by scanning amiibo, from Treasure Chests, Pop Flowers, and other containers, by scoring high in the Goal Game, and by countering certain boss attacks, including Whispy Woods' Burst Fruit, King Dedede's Dispose Food, and Francisca's Deadly Ice Candies, in addition to merely being found out in the open. Many food items from the previous Kirby games return in Kirby Star Allies, but like the other more recent Kirby games, more food items have been added. Some food items are even associated with specific characters, such as Daroach having the Strawberry Shortcake from Kirby: Squeak Squad. Outside of edible food items, food also plays a role in a more decorative sense in some parts of the game. In the opening cutscene for Story Mode, King Dedede is brought eclairs by the Waddle Dees before the Dark Hearts fall on him, which may tie into the game's code name "eclair" while it was in development. Additionally, Friendly Field and parts of Inside Islands have giant macarons in the background as part of their environments. Food also appears in several of the Celebration Pictures.

Kirby Fighters 2[edit]

Various pieces of food can appear in Kirby Fighters 2 which can be used to recover a small amount of HP. In standard battles, all food aside from Energy Drinks and Maxim Tomatoes restore 24 HP when consumed. Food can appear a variety of ways, as follows:

In Story Mode: The Destined Rivals, picking up Recovery Stones will allow the player's fighter and teammate to gain more HP back when eating food items during battle.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land[edit]

Kirby and the Forgotten Land features food in a similar fashion to previous games, referring to them as "Food Items". Notably, all Food Items have official names defined for use in dialogue such as receiving a Present at Kirby's House. This code also divides them into different categories of food such as "Dinner" and "Drink". Nearly every one is also a collectible figure. Food can also serve a more important purpose to gameplay than simply restoring health, since some mission objectives require finding and collecting certain types of food. Additionally, Vending Mouth shoots out soft drinks that act as projectiles and can be collected as regular food items afterward.

Kirby's Dream Buffet[edit]

By virtue of its dessert-themed setting, many types of food can be seen in Kirby's Dream Buffet, but not all of it is edible. The main variety of collectible food in Kirby's Dream Buffet is strawberries, which Kirby collects in vast numbers to grow in size and compete against his opponents. Strawberries also contribute to Kirby's Gourmet Rank, with each one being worth at least one Gourmet Point, and potentially more depending on the difficulty of the match or if Kirby was playing online. There are also blueberries, cherries, and raspberries which serve the same purpose, but may give Kirby special rewards when the results are being decided.

  • From Kirby's Return to Dream Land to Kirby: Planet Robobot, the Lemon Juice food item features an orange-colored juice and a green-colored citrus slice, making it resemble orange juice with a slice of lime rather than lemon juice. The texture file in Kirby's Return to Dream Land in the LemonJuice.brres.cmp file in fact refers to the juice as orange juice. As of Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, both the juice and the citrus slice are now colored yellow to look like lemon juice.
