"Butter Building" is a theme originating in Kirby's Adventure, and has since returned in many games in the Kirby series. It was composed by Hirokazu Ando.

Composition[edit]

Kirby visits Butter Building.

"Butter Building" is a jolly theme in E major and 4/4. A notable characteristic trait of this piece is the scarce usage of its tonic. It starts with a double dominant introductory segment. Its melody consists of short phrases with a repeated syncopated first note and movement down or up until stopping on the mediant or dominant, hinting at the key; this is followed by a high-pitched response. The melody repeats with a different ending, that leads into the second portion. This part has a more lyrical melody that contains some phrasing elements from "Vegetable Valley". This part emphasizes the minor harmonies associated with the mediant G-sharp. However, the minor does not stay long, as it gives way to dominant, and soon after the track loops.

Game appearances[edit]

Kirby's Adventure / Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land[edit]

In both Kirby's Adventure and its remake, Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, the theme is used in all stages of Butter Building, as well as Grape Garden - Stage 2 and Grape Garden - Stage 6. Exclusively in the original Kirby's Adventure, a faster paced and shorter arrangement of theme plays in the Crane Fever Sub-Game, while the crane is moving.

In the Sound Test of Kirby's Adventure, the normal version can be found as Music 32, a version of it without the intro can be found as Music 33, and the Crane Fever version can be found as Music 0A. In the Sound Test of Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, the theme can be found as Music 04.

Kirby's Avalanche[edit]

The "Butter Building" remix from Kirby's Avalanche.

An F-sharp/G-flat major remix of "Butter Building" plays during Easy difficulty stages of Competition Mode in Kirby's Avalanche.

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards[edit]

"Above the Clouds" from Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards by Jun Ishikawa.

A slow-paced remix of this theme plays in stage 2 of Shiver Star, though it plays in F major. It is named "Above the Clouds" in the Kirby: Planet Robobot Original Soundtrack, and is arranged by Jun Ishikawa.[1]

Kirby: Canvas Curse[edit]

"Silent Seabed" from Kirby: Canvas Curse.

In Kirby: Canvas Curse, a very faithful and upbeat arrangement of the theme titled "Silent Seabed" plays in the stage with the same name.

When the "Old School" sound mode is selected, the Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land arrangement (referred to as "Classic Song 1-3" in-game) plays in Machine Mansion and Mad Mechanism. Moreover, this version of "Butter Building" appears during the staff credits when playing as Waddle Dee.

Kirby: Squeak Squad[edit]

"Stage: Castle Dedede, etc." from Kirby: Squeak Squad.

In Kirby: Squeak Squad, an arrangement of "Butter Building" very similar to the Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land one, except with an updated soundfont, can be heard in stages 4, 5 and EX of Prism Plains, Cushy Cloud - Stage 7 EX, Ice Island - Stage 3 and Secret Sea - Stage 3. It is titled ステージ:デデデ城他 (Stage: Castle Dedede, etc.) on Nintendo Mobile.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, a track named "Butter Building" is one of the tracks available to be played as a default track in the Halberd stage. Despite being named after "Butter Building", it's actually a medley, although it predominantly features said theme.

In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, "Butter Building" receives another medley named after it, this time called "Butter Building Ver. 2". It's one of the default tracks of the The Great Cave Offensive stage. "Butter Building" from Super Smash Bros. Brawl also returns for the Halberd stage, but this time as an unlockable track.

The two remixes along with their stages reappear in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, now being playable in all Kirby series stages, like all other tracks. However, both are renamed: "Butter Building" to "Butter Building (Brawl)" and "Butter Building Ver. 2" to "Butter Building (for 3DS / Wii U)". Both are available from the start as default tracks.

Kirby's Epic Yarn / Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn[edit]

Kirby's Epic Yarn and Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn feature a piano centered arrangement of "Butter Building", which plays in Tempest Towers.

Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition[edit]

The Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land arrangement of the theme is reused in the map of Happiness Hall in the New Challenge Stages mode.

When selecting Kirby's Avalanche in the Kirby's History mode, its Butter Building remix plays.

Kirby Fighters Deluxe[edit]

In Kirby Fighters Deluxe, the original Kirby's Adventure version of the theme with a shortened intro is reused in the Butter Building stage.

Kirby and the Rainbow Curse[edit]

"Butter Building" from Kirby and the Rainbow Curse.

A remix of the theme can be unlocked by collecting one of the Treasure Chests found in the The Wild Red Yonder stage, to then be played at the Music Room.

Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]

In Kirby: Planet Robobot, "Above the Clouds" from Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards is reused in Resolution Road - Stage 6 EX.

Kirby Fighters 2[edit]

"Butter Building (Secret Song)" from Kirby Fighters 2.

Much like Kirby Fighters Deluxe, Kirby Fighters 2 reuses the original version of "Butter Building" with a shortened intro for the eponymous Battle Stage. In addition, an arrangement of the theme can be unlocked as the secret song for the same stage at Fighters Rank 74.

Other appearances[edit]

In the Kirby's Adventure soundtrack album, the "Butter Building" theme receives a vocal remix named カクテルを作つくろう! (Let's Make a Cocktail!).

In the bonus track Club Mix フィールドのなか (Club Mix: In the Fields) of the Kirby 64 Original Soundtrack, the "Above the Clouds" arrangement is mixed in with "Inside the Ruins" and "Planet Popstar: Stage Select", along with some of Kirby's voice clips.

In The Sound of Kirby Café, the theme receives an upbeat remix as Track 2: バターたっぷりビルディング/バタービルディング (Butter Brimming Building / Butter Building).
