"Toy Rhythm"[1] is a piece of music created for Kirby: Triple Deluxe, appearing exclusively in the second stage of Lollipop Land. It was composed by Hirokazu Ando.

Composition[edit]

Kirby in the process of disrupting the assembly line's rhythm.

"Toy Rhythm" is a chipper theme starting in E minor (with later modulation to G minor and B-flat major) which plays at roughly 110 BPM. Though it is set in 4/4, it makes heavy use of triplet rhythm throughout, both lending the theme a bouncier feel in the A section and a slower, waltz-like feel in the B section.

In a Miiverse post from Satoshi Ishida, composer Hirokazu Ando stated that "Toy Rhythm" was deliberately written with old game background music in mind: to achieve this, waveforms were sampled from an old system and used in the final mix.[2] Though this is vaguely referred to as "a real console [...] [which] is unfortunately broken" in the English version of the post, the original Japanese version of the post specifically talks about a Twin Famicom system (a combination of both a Famicom and Famicom Disk System) that has a broken disk drive.[3]

Game appearances[edit]

Kirby: Triple Deluxe[edit]

In Kirby: Triple Deluxe, "Toy Rhythm" debuts as the primary music of Lollipop Land's second stage. It can be found as track 22 in the Jukebox.

Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]

"Toy Box" from Kirby: Planet Robobot.

In Kirby: Planet Robobot, "Toy Box", a much slower arrangement of "Toy Rhythm" with comparatively-modern synths, plays in the Sticker Room before all 200 stickers are obtained. This arrangement was handled by Hirokazu Ando, the theme's original composer, and can be found in the Jukebox as track 54.

Other appearances[edit]

Both "Toy Rhythm" and "Toy Box" make appearances on soundtrack releases: the former appears as track 15 on Kirby: Triple Deluxe Soundtrack, while the latter appears on the first disc of Kirby: Planet Robobot Original Soundtrack as track 37.
