Another Dimension (sometimes formatted as "another dimension") is the name given to a strange eerie alternate dimension featured many times in the Kirby series, first appearing in Kirby's Return to Dream Land. It is the home of the Sphere Doomers, as well as several very powerful parallel versions of bosses from Kirby's native dimension. Whenever Kirby and his friends are tasked to enter this dimension, it is usually in order to stop some powerful villains from wreaking havoc in Kirby's home dimension.

Another Dimension is characterized by large empty spaces filled with strange swirling patterns and energy. It can be seen as closely linked to Kirby's native dimension in that several images and impressions of places from said dimension will appear in the background of Another Dimension. Where there is solid ground, it is usually depicted as glowing yellow blocky formations which often shift and can easily crush when doing so. Large spiky star-shaped hazards also float freely in this area, making it generally hostile to navigate through. It is stated several times, particularly in the Japanese versions, that Another Dimension is beyond both time and space.

Some areas in Another Dimension take place in those that resemble parts of Kirby's home dimension, depicted with monochromatic or washed-out colors. In Kirby's Return to Dream Land and its remake, these areas usually have purple walls that serve as a crushing hazard for Kirby and friends should they not move fast, in addition to a battle with a Sphere Doomer at the end. In Kirby Star Allies, battles with parallel bosses take place in a version of their boss arena with alternate colors.

Kirby and other characters are capable of opening rifts to Another Dimension from their home dimension using sufficiently powerful attacks or advanced ancient technology. More information on what can exactly open these rifts are located in the "Dimensional rift" subsection under #Related terms.

Naming discrepancies

Another Dimension has been referred to with several varying terms throughout the series since Kirby's Return to Dream Land, and this characteristic is even more prominent in the Japanese versions of said games. For reference, the term used to refer to Another Dimension in Japanese is "異空間" (ikuukan), and localized versions tend to refer to Another Dimension as such or in completely lowercase letters ("another dimension"). However, Japanese texts throughout the series also refer to Another Dimension with different terms like "異空" (ikuu, "another sky"), "別次元" (betsu jigen, "another dimension" or "different dimension") and "異界" or "異世界" (ikai or isekai, "another world"), among others. In some cases, this leads to discrepancies when various sources of text referencing Another Dimension (including pause screen flavor text and dialogue) and even similar texts that aren't directly related to Another Dimension are localized, especially in English versions of various games.

Another World (別の世界/異世界/異界)

In the Japanese version of Kirby's Return to Dream Land, Magolor refers to Halcandra as being located in "another world" (別の世界, betsu no sekai). This is translated as being located in "another dimension" in the English version. HR-D3's original flavor text in the same game refers to it originating from "another dimension" in English, but the Japanese version refers to it as being from "a different dimension that is not this one". The English version of Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe refers to HR-D3 as having "crossed time and space through an interdimensional tunnel" instead. A similar case is used for Galacta Knight's flavor text as well.

Most parallel bosses in Kirby Star Allies use "異世界" or "異界" (isekai or ikai, "another world") in their splash screen titles and their collective term in Japanese, the "Four Otherworldly Kings" (異界四天王いかいしてんのう). The only exceptions are Parallel Twin Kracko and Parallel Big Kracko, who are described as being from "異空" (another sky).

This term also is used to refer to Parallel Landia's origin in the description of the Parallel Landion from Super Kirby Clash.. The English version refers to this as "another world", a more direct translation. A similar case is used for the description of the Magoloran Garb, which describes Magolor as being from "another world".

Another Sky (異空)

Another related term used prominently in Japanese to refer to Another Dimension is 異空 (ikuu), which can be translated as either "another sky", "another world" or "another dimension". It is simply a one-character shortening of the commonly-used Japanese name for Another Dimension, "異空間". This is the term first used in the Japanese name of the song "Interdimensional Traveler" from Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition, which is "異空いくうヲカケル旅人たびびと" (The Traveler Across Another Dimension). It is also shared with the subtitle of Magolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler (マホロアエピローグ 異空イクウをかける旅人タビビト).

The Japanese version of Kirby Star Allies uses this term to refer to Another Dimension in the pause screen flavor text for Heroes in Another Dimension.. As mentioned in the previous section, Parallel Twin Kracko and Parallel Big Kracko are described in their boss splash screen text to be from "another sky" in the Japanese version of the game. Various Japanese names for some tracks in Kirby Star Allies: The Original Soundtrack also use the term, including "Another World to Win" (異空いくうをかけた戦たたかい) and "Dimensional Silence" (originally from Kirby's Return to Dream Land, "異空いくうの静寂せいじゃく").

Magolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler makes prominent use of this term when referring to several texts, such as explicitly referring to Magolor falling into "the depths of another dimension" in Japanese.. Various titles for the Japanese flavor text of various bosses in this mode incorporate this term, with one example being "Otherworldly Elevangelist" (異空いくうの電導師でんどうし) for Electricky Dooter.

Game appearances

Kirby's Return to Dream Land / Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe

Throughout Kirby's Return to Dream Land and its remake, star-shaped rifts leading to Another Dimension can be opened by using Super Abilities, usually when a very large object has been destroyed with said ability. These interdimensional stretches appear monochrome (or slightly washed-out in the case of Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe). When Kirby enters a rift to Another Dimension, he automatically loses his current Super Ability and/or Copy Ability, forcing him to make use of his Inhale and other normal moves throughout these sections. These stretches also have moving purple walls that threaten to crush Kirby, and can be pushed back using Star Bullets.

At the end of an interdimensional segment, Kirby usually battles a Sphere Doomer that drops a pair of Energy Spheres upon defeat. This results in color being restored to the area, and Kirby and friends can exit back to the regular stage by entering another dimensional rift. If Kirby is defeated while inside an interdimensional segment, he is forced out of the rift and has to start from the beginning if it is entered again. The music for these sections is also appropriately named "Another Dimension".

Level 8: Another Dimension

Later in the adventure, after Magolor betrays Kirby and his friends, he exits through a rift to Another Dimension with the intent of befalling Planet Popstar to his rule, supposedly stranding Kirby and friends in Halcandra. However, Landia offers to let them ride on his back and pursue Magolor through the portal. Throughout the entirety of the Another Dimension level, Kirby and friends ride fly through several side-scrolling shooter segments, while also dealing with moving walls, Sphere Doomer-like creatures, and pulsating crystals. Eventually, Kirby and friends do battle with Magolor in an eerie, glowing area with Popstar visible through a distant rift. After the friends defeat Magolor's second form, the surrounding dimension begins to collapse, and Landia comes to the rescue to bring them home, with the Lor Starcutter also following and ensuring stability of the rift ahead.

Magolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler

In Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, most of Magolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler takes place deep within Another Dimension, with its surrounding dimensions featuring some degree of color tint corresponding to the theming of its many stages. Many of the mode's stages also feature Darpas, Dippas, Dupas, and Deppas, which were originally exclusive to the Another Dimension level. These dimensions are also home to different elemental bosses and the Rampaging Doomers, although their relation to parallel bosses is unknown. Eventually, Magolor escapes through a dimensional rift at the end of the mode, which takes him to the Dream Kingdom.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe

Kirby and Shadow Kirby duke it out in Another Dimension.

In the Kirby Fighters Sub-Game, the last fight against Shadow Kirby takes place in Another Dimension, even using the same music as in Kirby's Return to Dream Land. This Battle Stage can also be selected for play in Training.

Kirby: Planet Robobot

The pause screen text for Holo-Doomers 2.0 makes mention of Another Dimension when referring to the Sphere Doomers, however it is unknown where and when did Susie encounter them during her travels. Star Dream also appears to be capable of opening rifts to this dimension, which is how it summoned Galacta Knight in Meta Knightmare Returns. During the battle with Galacta Knight, he will occasionally open a rift to Another Dimension as an attack, with the Lor Starcutter occasionally making an appearance in this rift.

Team Kirby Clash Deluxe & Super Kirby Clash

A few of the bosses, specifically Greater Doomer, Parallel Landia and Parallel Susie, hail from what is presumed to be Another Dimension. In Team Kirby Clash Deluxe, the Black Mirror is used as a gateway between dimensions. In Super Kirby Clash, the main villain Parallel Nightmare also hails from Another Dimension. Just like in Kirby: Planet Robobot, Aeon Hero can open up a rift to Another Dimension as an attack, with the Jamba Heart also appearing in the background.

Kirby Star Allies

The final major update to Kirby Star Allies adds a new mode to the game, Heroes in Another Dimension. In this mode, Kirby and friends travel through different dimensions taking place within Another Dimension, collecting Friend Hearts and battling parallel bosses as they go. The rift here is opened by Hyness' continuous praying at the altar in The Divine Terminus, and more of these rifts are opened as the player progresses throughout this mode.

In the same update, The Divine Terminus in Guest Star ???? Star Allies Go! has a pool in the floor that features the background of Another Dimension. Defeating Hyness in this mode will cause him to sink into the pool, a subtle hint towards the events of Heroes in Another Dimension.

The Japanese pause screen text for Morpho Knight EX states that it comes from Another Dimension.

Dimensional rifts

Various star-shaped rifts called "dimensional rifts" appear throughout the series, starting with Kirby's Return to Dream Land. The many dimensional rifts that are encountered by Kirby throughout the game are said to have been created by Energy Spheres, and lead to stretches within Another Dimension which usually culminate in a battle with a Sphere Doomer. These rifts are colored blue in Story Mode, but gain a slightly reddish purple hue in Extra Mode.

Generally speaking, these dimensional rifts are usually the main mode of transport to Another Dimension, oftentimes manifesting with the power of magical spells or ancient technology. The following is a list of every entity/technique which have been confirmed to open rifts connecting to Another Dimension:

Some entities like Greater Doomer, Parallel Susie, and enemies that grant Super Abilities in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe also emerge from dimensional rifts, but how they were opened is unclear.

Another Dimension Road

A related term used in Japanese versions of Kirby's Return to Dream Land and in Kirby: Planet Robobot is "Another Dimension Road" (異空間ロード, ikuukan rōdo), translated as "interdimensional tunnel" in English. It is used in the former game to refer to the space where Planet Popstar and Halcandra are connected, and is also where the entirety of the Another Dimension level takes place in the Japanese version. Star Dream also refers to "Another Dimension Road" during the process of summoning Galacta Knight in the Japanese version of Kirby: Planet Robobot, but is interestingly translated as "Extra-dimensional road" instead of "interdimensional tunnel" in the English version.

Similar realms

• In the New Challenge Stages, the last couple Magolor Races take place in an area which greatly resembles Another Dimension.
• Some of the backgrounds in the rest areas for The True Arena in Kirby's Return to Dream Land, Kirby: Triple Deluxe and Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe feature backgrounds resembling Another Dimension, usually in the final stretches of the mode.
• In Team Kirby Clash Deluxe and Super Kirby Clash, various backgrounds in Decisive Battlefield and the Dreamscape feature elements from Another Dimension, including its warped grid background and pulsating crystals.
• The space within the massive vortex of rifts between the New World and Popstar seen at the beginning of the game greatly resembles Another Dimension. Additionally this rift and the ones later created by Fecto Elfilis and Elfilin, the rifts into Treasure Roads, and the rift into the isolated isles of Forgo Dreams externally resemble rifts into Another Dimension, though more ragged and sharp in appearance.
• Treasure Roads exist within a different reality, and like Another Dimension, they can only be visited for a short time and contain a specific challenge.
• The isolated isles of Forgo Dreams also resemble Another Dimension, though as the name implies, they are stated to be some form of psychic projection of Fecto Forgo's dreams. Interestingly, the final stage's theme, "Scattered Souls across Isolated Isles", is a remix of "Another Dimension", and the new updated look of Another Dimension stretches in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe appears to borrow inspiration from the mode.
