The Kirby 30th Anniversary Music Festival (also written as Kirby 30th Anniversary Music Fest.) was a music festival that was held at the Tokyo Garden Theater on August 11th, 2022, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Kirby series. Initially only planned as a single performance at 18:00 JST, an extra performance at 12:30 JST was added due to high demand.[1] The evening performance was livestreamed for free worldwide, and an archive of the livestream was up until August 31st, 2022, 18:00 JST.[2]
Unlike the Kirby 25th Anniversary Orchestra Concert, which exclusively had orchestrated music, this event featured a large big band-style ensemble of 35 musicians, called the "Kirby 30th Anniversary Special Band Deluxe", that performed Kirby music in a variety of genres. There was also a large LED monitor that featured gameplay footage and a real-time animated Kirby. Kirby's voice actress Makiko Ohmoto and series director Shinya Kumazaki were present as special guests. Neichel also made a surprise appearance during Special Live Performance: WELCOME TO THE NEW WORLD!, although her identity remained anonymous due to her face being covered by a wide-brimmed hat.
Among the merchandise sold at the event were penlights — battery-powered LED glowsticks, unlike the chemical light sticks used for the 25th Anniversary Orchestra Concert — advertised as lighting up in twelve colors. Guests were encouraged to wave their penlights in specific ways at specific times during the event, with cues provided by Kirby through the LED monitor. A radio-frequency control system[3] automatically changed the color and brightness of the penlights at the venue in sync with each song, including colors beyond the manually selectable twelve shades.[4] The system accentuated different points of the concert with different colors, such as green and white during "Green Greens". The most striking use of this system not replicable outside of the Festival was rapid switching of colors through the available spectrum, used for some of the tracks assigned a "rainbow" penlight icon in the the Live Blu-ray product page's Music List.[5]
Blu-ray and CD release[edit]
On August 11th, 2023 (the one-year anniversary of the event), a Blu-ray and CD release of the music festival was announced. Titled the Kirby 30th Anniversary Music Festival Live Blu-ray and Live CD, the set is priced at ¥8,800 (roughly $60 USD) and was released on October 31st. As with the Kirby 25th Anniversary Orchestra Concert's release, the CD only includes the songs, while the Blu-ray features the entire performance including the interludes and commentary between songs; unlike that release, however, there is no option to buy them separately. Pre-ordering the set before the end of August 31st, 2023 included a replica of the ID card used by staff members during the concert.
The CD and Blu-ray's audio are completely remastered compared to the YouTube stream, with some parts re-recorded to address technical issues (most notably, removing an instance of guitar feedback during "Beyond the 25th Anniversary"). The Blu-ray footage includes the option to switch between two different cameras: one that focuses on the musicians and the live performance, another that focuses on the gameplay footage (often directly showcasing it in full) and the audience.
Track list[edit]
The following is a list of tracks that were performed at the concert. They were arranged by Megumi Ohara, Yuuta Ogasawara, Shogo Sakai and Yuki Shimooka.[6] Names of songs present in the tracks, as well as specific arranger credits for some tracks, are taken from the festival's official pamphlet unless indicated otherwise.

Megumi Ohara | Consists of "Green Greens", "Running Through the New World", and "Kirby Dance". The "Green Greens" portion of this track was one of the first arrangements for the Festival, created by Megumi Ohara as a demo during the Festival's initial planning. Its high level of completion and conviction persuaded the staff to keep as much of the original demo arrangement as possible.[7] |

The medley ends underscored heavily by synths, an intentional choice to recall the use of a Game Boy sample at the end of "Bye Bye Kirby, See You Tomorrow!" from the Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition staff roll.[7] |
Penlight usage[edit]
As outlined previously, glowsticks called penlights had their colors automatically changed to match the songs and gameplay present in the festival. The following is a complete documentation of every penlight use during the event, and what they represent in the songs. While most colors are taken from the official website, some changes and corrections are made based on the footage itself.

Trivia[edit]
Four of the five Sub-Games whose music featured in "Get Pumped Up! Sub-Game Medley" would also return in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe as part of Merry Magoland. | |
---|---|
Samurai Kirby |
Egg Catcher |
Checkerboard Chase |
Smash Ride |
- Apart from Tilt-and-Roll Kirby, every single Sub-Game whose music featured in the "Get Pumped Up! Sub-Game Medley" ("わいわい!サブゲームフェス" in Japanese) returns in Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe as part of Merry Magoland (わいわいマホロアランド in Japanese—note in particular the shared use of waiwai, an ideophone suggesting a noisy bustling atmosphere).
- Video footage accompanying the same medley towards the end shows results screens for Smash Ride, Crackity Hack, Kirby Card Swipe, and Kirby on the Draw; of these, all but Kirby Card Swipe return in Merry Magoland. This in turn means that Bomb Rally is the only Merry Magoland Sub-Game returning from a game prior to Kirby's Return to Dream Land that did not feature in the Kirby 30th Anniversary Music Festival.
- Megumi Ohara wrote "The Knights' Revenge Medley" to give the brass section a rest after the previous songs. Because the original themes in the medley were rock, very little brass was necessary for the arrangement; the only brass during the entire song is a short solo by the first trumpet during the "Morpho Knight" segment, which was specifically written to ensure that the first trumpet would have as much time as possible to rest and conserve energy for other songs. However, to her amusement, Ohara noted that the brass section still ended up being active because they were waving their penlights during the entire song.[8]
- In the gameplay footage of "Suite: The Star-Conquering Traveler", the three Friends who venture alongside Kirby change for each song. It features regular Friends (Poppy Bros. Jr., Burning Leo, and Chilly) for "Prelude: Into the Distant Sea of Stars" and the first movement, the Dream Friends from Wave 1 (Rick & Kine & Coo, Marx and Gooey) for the second movement, the ones from Wave 2 (Adeleine & Ribbon, Dark Meta Knight and Daroach) for the third movement, the ones from Wave 3 (Magolor, Taranza, Susie) for the fourth movement, each of The Three Mage-Sisters for the final movement, and the Dream Friends from the base game (Bandana Waddle Dee, King Dedede and Meta Knight) for "Last Friends".
- A key source of inspiration for the 30th Anniversary Music Festival was the big band arrangements featured on the 2017 Kirby Memorial Arrangements CD, "Big Band Kirby" and "I'll Never Forget You", and the rich possible variations on Kirby music in performance and genre that these arrangements suggested; many performers featured on these tracks returned to play in the Festival, including those on "Big Band Kirby" playing returning nostalgic phrases in "Kirby Endings".[9]
- The pamphlet sold at the time of the Festival does not list the "Kirby Endings" encore on the set list; the Live Blu-ray & Live CD set does so.
- The pamphlet included with the Live Blu-ray & Live CD set also includes lyrics for "Green Tree Memories with Kirby", which the Festival pamphlet does not.
