Normal[1] refers to Kirby's regular state when he has no Copy Ability copied, and can either copy one or use his Inhale to inhale enemies and split them out as Star Bullets, although not every appearance of Normal allows Kirby to do both of these actions. It is not exactly a Copy Ability by definition, but it is categorized as one in Kirby Portal, and occasionally at least partly treated as one in some games.

Normal is Kirby's default state in all games it appears in, and as such is the state Kirby has whenever a game is started, and also when Kirby comes back after losing a life. In games where Normal allows Kirby to copy abilities, Normal is replaced with the ability copied, and when that ability is lost or dropped, Kirby reverts to Normal. Some games also have other means of applying the Normal state to Kirby.

Normal is only referred to as such in a small number of games, in which Kirby is the only playable character and he is able to use Copy Abilities (Kirby's Adventure, Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, Kirby: Squeak Squad, and New Challenge Stages). In other games, it is either referred to as Kirby or it simply does not have an in-game name.

Game appearances

Kirby's Dream Land

Normal debuts in Kirby's Dream Land only allowing Kirby to inhale and spit out enemies as stars.

Kirby's Adventure / Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land

In Kirby's Adventure, Normal first gains the property of allowing Kirby to copy abilities, and is also properly represented and named in-game as an icon. It also appears unchanged in its remake, Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, although this time not directly named.

Kirby's Dream Course

In Kirby's Dream Course, Normal makes its first appearance without the property of inhaling and spitting out Star Bullets, instead allowing Kirby and Keeby to copy abilities after defeating certain enemies. In this game alone, Normal is one of the obtainable abilities in the Mix roulette, and landing on it will remove any previous ability Kirby or Keeby had.

Kirby's Dream Land 2

Normal functions in Kirby's Dream Land 2 the same as it did in Kirby's Adventure, albeit now it also allows Kirby to use its abilities when riding an Animal Friend.

Kirby's Block Ball

In Kirby's Block Ball, Normal functions almost the same as it did in Kirby's Dream Course: Kirby can obtain copy abilities by defeating certain enemies, but cannot inhale.

Kirby Super Star / Kirby Super Star Ultra

In Kirby Super Star and its remake, Kirby Super Star Ultra, Normal functions the same as it did in previous mainline games except in Milky Way Wishes, where Normal Kirby can only copy limited-use abilities. In addition, uniquely to this game, Kirby can perform the Normal Beam only in his Normal state.

Kirby's Dream Land 3

In Kirby's Dream Land 3, Normal works similarly to Kirby's Dream Land 2. However, some Animal Friends have new unique interactions when inhaling (Rick can walk but has short range, and ChuChu uses her tentacle to grab and feed Kirby).

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards

In Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Normal works similarly to previous mainline games; however, enemies spit by Kirby aren't always spit as Star Bullets. In addition, much like all other Copy Abilities in the game, Normal's skills can be used underwater, including Kirby's inhale and spit. In the Japanese version, when the heads-up display is set to option 4, Normal displays as ("nothing").

Kirby Air Ride

Kirby Air Ride features Normal with the same properties as its appearances in mainline games, and is the only spin-off with this characteristic. However, Kirby can only effectively use Normal when riding an Air Ride Machine; when walking around without one in City Trial, Kirby cannot inhale or copy abilities from Copy Panels.

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror

In Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, Normal works pretty much the same as previous mainline games, and is named in-game in the main HUD when Kirby has no copy ability equipped.

Kirby: Canvas Curse

In Kirby: Canvas Curse, Normal functions almost the same as it did in Kirby's Dream Course and Kirby's Block Ball, where Kirby can copy abilities after defeating certain enemies.

Kirby: Squeak Squad

Normal's idle animation in Kirby: Squeak Squad.

In Kirby: Squeak Squad, Normal works pretty much the same as previous mainline games, and is named in-game in the main HUD when Kirby has no copy ability equipped. Normal Kirby also has a unique idle animation, where Kirby dreams about his lost Strawberry Shortcake.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land / Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe

In Kirby's Return to Dream Land and its remake, Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Normal functions the same as it did in previous mainline games. In addition, Normal is used for the Item Challenge, albeit the focus of said Challenge Stage is on items, not on Normal itself.

Kirby starts to suck up air directly in front of him, and any inhalable enemy and object in his range will go towards. Once that happens, Kirby's mouth will be full, and if the button is pressed again, Kirby will spit what he had in his mouth as a Star Bullet.
Super Inhale
1 + Shake Wii Remote or mash + Control Pad
Hold B/Y or B/Y + move L-stick rapidly
Same as Inhale, except the range is much larger and Kirby will remain inhaling for as long as the controller is shaken/button is held. In Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, Super Inhale can also be triggered by holding B/Y and shaking the controller if motion controls are turned on, or mashing + Control Pad. Swallow/Copy

After inhaling a foe, this makes Kirby swallow them. Nothing happens if the foe has no Copy Ability, but if it has, Kirby copies said ability.

Kirby spins and moves slightly to the direction pressed (or stays in place if up or down are pressed), dodging attacks.
Air Dodge N/A

Same as Dodge, but in midair, and Kirby always stays in place.

Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition

In Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition, Normal reappears in all of the games available as Classic Titles. Moreover, in New Challenge Stages, Normal gains a proper challenge in the form of Normal Challenge. It is not available in Magolor Race 3 and Magolor Race EX as it's not a proper Copy Ability.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe

In Kirby: Triple Deluxe, Normal works pretty much the same as previous mainline games. While Hypernova at first appears to be a stronger version of Normal, it does not allow Kirby to copy abilities, and in particular Hypernova cannot spit enemies or objects as Star Bullets like Normal can in most games.

Kirby: Planet Robobot

In Kirby: Planet Robobot, Normal works pretty much the same as previous mainline games. Normal is also the default mode of the Robobot Armor,[2] being able to copy abilities much like Kirby, albeit by scanning enemies other than inhaling them.

Kirby's Blowout Blast

In Kirby's Blowout Blast, Normal functions the same as it did in Kirby's Dream Land: Kirby can inhale and spit out enemies as stars, but cannot copy abilities.

Kirby Star Allies

In Kirby Star Allies, Normal works pretty much the same as previous mainline games, and similarly to in Kirby Super Star and its remake, Kirby can use the Unfriend move when on Normal state to remove Friends. Normal Kirby is also a selectable option for The Ultimate Choice. In Heroes in Another Dimension and The Ultimate Choice's Soul Melter EX difficulty, Normal Kirby's Star Bullets deal double damage compared to all other modes.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land

In Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Normal works pretty much the same as previous mainline games, although like in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, enemies spit by Kirby aren't always spit as pure Star Bullets, but they have the same properties as them. There are two Treasure Road stages based on Normal (and called "Normal Treasure" for short): Sweet Success! Invincible Rampage and Kirby's Inhale Showdown. In addition, while Normal isn't necessary for Kirby to obtain Mouthful Modes, the Normal state is always forced on Kirby whenever he enters a Treasure Road stage for one, similarly to the two Normal stages. Interestingly, when Kirby is set to Normal status after selecting these stages, the "Copy Ability obtained" sound effect plays, as if Normal was a proper copy ability.

If Kirby attempts to swallow a foe to gain an ability in any of the Normal Treasure Roads, he will not copy the ability: the ability will instead be automatically discarded in an expiring state.[3]

Kirby's Dream Buffet

In Kirby's Dream Buffet, Normal functions pretty much the same as it did in Kirby's Dream Course, Kirby's Block Ball and Kirby: Canvas Curse, although Kirby obtains Copy Food Abilities instead of regular Copy Abilities.
