Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (known in Japan as 大乱闘スマッシュブラザーズ SPECIAL Great Fray Smash Bros. SPECIAL) is the fifth entry in the Super Smash Bros. series of platform fighting games, set to release on December 7th, 2018 for the Nintendo Switch. It was first announced under the pending title Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo Switch on March 8th, 2018 during a Nintendo Direct, then revealed on June 12th, 2018 during Nintendo's E3 presentation.
Fighters
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate features every fighter from all older games in the series, including those who appeared only in one title prior.
Currently, a total of 74 fighters have been confirmed for the base game (Pokémon Trainer counts as one; number includes Echo Fighters.) 11 newcomers have been revealed in the base game, and DLC fighters are also in making.
Despite the massive roster, a new game will start the unknown reader off with only the eight fighters from the original Super Smash Bros., with the rest being unlockable or downloadable. However, the unlocking conditions are going to be easier and faster compared to previous games.
Kirby series fighters
Kirby
Kirby returns as a series veteran. Being part of the 'Perfect Attendance Crew', Kirby will be among the starter characters. He appears to retain most of his standard moves, along with his Final Smash, Ultra Sword.
Howver, Kirby receives some changes in his moveset:
- He once again has his Burning dash attack from Melee.
- His neutral B, Inhale, can now inhale opponent's projectiles. Then, he can either spit it back as a Star Bullet or swallow it to restore his health. This is the first time Kirby can inhale non-item projectiles in the Super Smash Bros. series.
Meta Knight
Meta Knight returns in this title, as an unlockable fighter. His moveset appears relatively unchanged, but he receives a new Final Smash in which he obtains another pair of wings and performs a Great Aether-like aerial slash combo, similar to Upper Calibur from Kirby Star Allies.
Two of his alternate costumes give him Galacta Knight and Dark Meta Knight outfit.
King Dedede
King Dedede returns in this title, as an unlockable fighter. His moveset appears relatively unchanged, but he now has the ability to inhale his Gordos after tossing them, then spit them back out again. Like Kirby in Ultimate, Dedede can inhale and spit opponent's projectiles.
King Dedede's Final Smash has changed, now involving tossing his opponent into a boxing ring, then attacking them as Masked Dedede.
Stages
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has 103 confirmed stages so far, over 90 of which are returning ones from previous titles. See all stages on the official website list.
All stages are available from the beginning. In addition, all stages have Battlefield form (Battlefield-like layout) and Ω form (Final Destination-like layout).
New to the series is a stage option called Stage Morph. When this is enabled, two stages can be selected together, and they will automatically switch midbattle after a certain amount of time.
Kirby stages
All Kirby series stages from older titles have been returning. These include the following in chronological order:
Kirby music
The Kirby series has 39 confirmed stage music tracks so far, which can be played in any stage of the Kirby series too. (This also applies to other series. Stages of a series can now play all tracks from the same series.)
Currently revealed Kirby music includes:
Items
Kirby Items
A number of Kirby series items appear in this title. These are as follows:
Items
- Bomber (new): It walks around the stage and may fall off the ledge like what it does in the Kirby series. When picked up, it will explode in 1.5 seconds. It deals more damage to fighters at the center of the explosion, but won't damage the fighter who picked it up.
- Dragoon Parts A, B, C
- Maxim Tomato
- Star Rod
- Superspicy Curry
- Warp Star
Assist Trophies
- Chef Kawasaki (new): He grabs fighters with his ladle, and if succesful, puts them into his Cook Pot and cooks them. Then, the cooked fighters are launched off the pot along with several food items produced. This resembles Cook Kirby, Kirby's Final Smash in Brawl.
- Knuckle Joe
- Nightmare
Game Modes
Smash

- Squad Strike (3 vs. 3 or 5 vs. 5)

Spirits
Spirits is the new mode in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. In this mode, the unknown reader can collect Spirits in the form of their official illustrations and use them in Spirits battles.
Spirits can be equipped to a fighter, which function like Stickers in Brawl. Spirits also replace the collectible Trophies in previous titles. Spirits can be obtained in various ways, including the Adventure Mode, the Spirits Board, summoning, and the Shop.
Types of Spirits
There are three kinds of Spirits: Primary, Support and Fighter. Their strength and rarity are ranked by Classes, from low to high: Novice (1 star), Advanced (2 stars; known as Hope in the Japanese version), Ace (3 Stars) and Legend (4 Stars).
Primary Spirits enhance the fighter's strength. They are divided into four types: Attack, Grab, Shield and Neutral. Types have advantage against one another (except Neutral): Attack>Grab>Shield>Attack. Primary Spirits have 0-3 slots to equip Support Spirits and gain additional skills. Some Primary Spirits have their own skills as well. Primary Spirits can gain experience and level up. Some of them can be enhanced into new forms when reaching Lv.99 the maximum level. Enhanced forms have increased strength and new skills (if any), but their level will be reset to 1.
Support Spirits give additional skills to the Primary Spirit. They cost 1 or more slots.
Fighter Spirits feature the main fighters. They cannot be used in the Spirits Mode. Thus, they serve only as collections.
Adventure Mode
The Adventure Mode of this title is called World of Light. In this mode, all characters in the Super Smash Bros. universe, except Kirby, have been turned into Spirits by Galeem the ultimate enemy. the unknown reader starts the game with Kirby and saves the Spirits and the world.
Spirits Board
Spirits Board[conjectual] is a mode to obtain Spirits outside of the Adventure Mode. It is a bulletin board with 10 random quests. Each quest requires the unknown reader to defeat a fighter possessed by a Spirit, with special rules like the Event matches in previous titles.
After defeating the possessed fighter, the unknown reader has to play a minigame to shoot the the possessed fighter with a special gun. The possessed fighter has a rotating shield. If the gun hits the fighter, the unknown reader can obtain the Spirit; if it hits the shield, the unknown reader loses the minigame. However, broken shields will remain in rematches so the unknown reader will have a better chance to win next time. In addition, there are items that can destroy part of the shield or slow down its rotation.
Each quest has a time limit to accept (rarer Spirits have longer time limits), and when the time limit is over, they will be replaced by new random quests. When a quest is finished, there will be a timer for respawn as well. There are items that can shuffle the quests or skip the respawn cooldown.

Trivia
- This is the second Super Smash Bros. title with official Chinese support. The first one is the original Super Smash Bros., localized and released on iQue Player in 2005.
- In Challenger Approaching Intro Video, Meta Knight appears together with Mewtwo. This could be a reference to the similar Japanese titles of Revenge of Meta Knight (メタナイトの逆襲) and Pokemon: The First Movie - Mewtwo Strikes Back (ミュウツーの逆襲), both depicting them as the main antagonist.
- In the Japanese and Chinese versions, Echo Fighters are called Dash Fighters and are labeled with the dash punctuation mark in their number (e.g. 13 Peach and 13' Daisy). In the English version, they are labeled ɛ, which stands for echo (e.g. 13 Peach and 13ɛ Daisy).
- Pit's new Final Smash, the Lightning Chariot, is similar to how the Dragoon is used in the Super Smash Bros. series. The Lightning Chariot strikes from the back while the Dragoon strikes from the front.
- Several Super Smash Bros. Ultimate accessories will also be released:
- Nintendo Switch Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Set (Nintendo Switch system + Super Smash Bros. Ultimate branded Joy-Con controllers and dock + a download code for the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate game)
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Special Edition Nintendo Switch Pro Controller
- Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Edition GameCube Controller
