"Battle on the Horizon" is a theme from Kirby's Return to Dream Land that plays in boss stages prior to the fights in the game and its remake. It was composed by Jun Ishikawa.[1]

Composition[edit]

An enemy on the horizon.

"Battle on the Horizon" is suspenseful and tense. It's simple in composition, as it only has two primary elements: a low ostinato revolving around a C (C, D-flat, B-flat, C) with percussion, and a slowly rising and then descending F-minor dominant seventh chord (D7) in the winds and strings, with each note's attack delayed and gradually increasing volume. The low ostinato somewhat resembles "VS Sphere Doomer" (and "VS. Meta Knight" by extension), and later becomes the intro of "Welcome Your New Overlord"; the dominant and registers carry over to "Blazing! Boss Battle".

Game appearances[edit]

Kirby's Return to Dream Land / Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe[edit]

In Kirby's Return to Dream Land and its remake, "Battle on the Horizon" plays in every boss stage in Story Mode and Extra Modes (with the exception of Nutty Noon - Stage 6's second room, where "Goal Game" plays instead). It can be found as music 15 in the original Wii version's Sound Test and as track 20 in the remake's Jukebox.

Exclusively in Kirby's Return to Dream Land, "Battle on the Horizon" plays when calibrating the Wii remote sensors for the Scope Shot Sub-Game.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe[edit]

The theme returns in Kirby: Triple Deluxe, playing in The True Arena's copy ability selection area. It can also be found as track 119 in the game's Jukebox.
