Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (known in Japan as 大乱闘スマッシュブラザーズ SPECIAL Great Fray Smash Bros. SPECIAL) is the fifth entry in the Super Smash Bros. series of platform fighting games, set to release on December 7th, 2018 for the Nintendo Switch. It was first announced under the pending title Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo Switch on March 8th, 2018 during a Nintendo Direct, then revealed on June 12th, 2018 during Nintendo's E3 presentation.
Characters
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate features every fighter from all older games in the series, including those who appeared only in one title prior.
Currently, a total of 67 fighters have been confirmed for the game, not counting Echo Fighters such as Lucina and Dark Pit. Currently, four non-echo newcomers have been revealed, with more expected to be shown before the release. Unlike previous titles, every new character and echo will be revealed before launch day.
Despite the massive roster, a new game will start the unknown reader off with only the fighters from the original Super Smash Bros., with the rest being unlockable.
Kirby series fighters
Kirby
Kirby returns as a series veteran. Being part of the 'Perfect Attendance Crew', Kirby will be among the starter characters.
He appears to retain most of his standard moves, along with his Final Smash, Ultra Sword. He appears to once again have his Burning dash attack from Melee.
Meta Knight
Meta Knight returns in this title, as an unlockable fighter. His move-set appears relatively unchanged.
One of his alternate costumes gives him Galacta Knight's mask.
King Dedede
King Dedede returns in this title, as an unlockable fighter. His move-set appears relatively unchanged, but he now has the ability to inhale his Gordos after tossing them, then spit them back out again.
His Final Smash has changed, now involving tossing his opponent into a boxing ring, then attacking them as Masked Dedede.
Stages
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has 103 confirmed stages so far, over 90 of which are returning ones from previous titles. All stages are available from the beginning and available for 8-Player Smash. In addition, all stages have Battlefield form (one flat platform & three aerial platforms) and Ω form (one flat platform only). New to the series is a stage option called Stage Morph. When this is enabled, two stages can be selected together, and one stage changes to the other one mid-battle at either a random time or a set time, depending on the option chosen.
Kirby stages
All Kirby series stages from older titles have been returning. These include the following in chronological order:
Kirby music
The Kirby series has 39 confirmed stage music tracks so far, which can be played in any stage of the Kirby series too. (This also applies to other series. Stages of a series can now play all tracks from the same series.)
Currently revealed Kirby music includes:
Track | From | Type |
---|---|---|
Green Greens | Kirby's Dream Land | Arrangement (Melee) |
Meta Knight's Revenge | Kirby Super Star | Arrangement (Brawl) |
King Dedede's Theme | Kirby's Dream Land | Arrangement (Brawl) |
City Trial | Kirby Air Ride | Arrangement (Ultimate) |
Items
Kirby Items
A number of Kirby series items appear in this title. These are as follows:
Items
- Bomber (new): It walks around the stage and may fall off the ledge like what it does in the Kirby series. After being picked up, it will explodes in 1.5 seconds. It deals more damage to fighters at the center of the explosion, but won't damage the fighter who picked it up.
- Dragoon
- Maxim Tomato
- Star Rod
- Warp Star
Assist Trophies
- Chef Kawasaki (new): He grabs fighters with his ladle, and if succesful, puts them into his Cook Pot and cooks them. Then, the cooked fighters are launched off the pot along with several food items produced. This resembles Kirby's Final Smash in Brawl, Cook Kirby.
- Knuckle Joe
Trophies
No information is known yet about trophies in this title.
Trivia
- This is the second Super Smash Bros. title with official Chinese support. The first one is the original Super Smash Bros., localized and released on iQue Player in 2005.
- When introducing every fighter in the E3 2018 presentation, Meta Knight appears together with Mewtwo. This could be a reference to the similar Japanese titles of Revenge of Meta Knight (メタナイトの逆襲) and Pokemon: The First Movie - Mewtwo Strikes Back (ミュウツーの逆襲), both depicting them as the main antagonist.
- In the Japanese and Chinese versions, Echo Fighters are called Dash Fighters and are labeled with the dash punctuation mark in their number (e.g. 13 Peach and 13' Daisy). In the English version, they are labeled ɛ, which stands for echo (e.g. 13 Peach and 13ɛ Daisy).
- Pit's new Final Smash, the Lightning Chariot, is similar to how the Dragoon is used in the Super Smash Bros. series. The Lightning Chariot strikes from the back while the Dragoon strikes from the front.
