"Squashini", named "Squashini's Theme" in the British English version, is a theme from Kirby's Epic Yarn and Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn associated with the boss with the same name. It was composed by Tomoya Tomita.[1]
Composition[edit]
"Squashini" is a somewhat comically dramatic theme in E minor and 4/4. The tension immediately builds up in the brass intro, where tonic triads grow into diminished ones. A trombone and piano ostinato then begins. After a harp glissando, the melody comes in as trills from the piano and a triangle tremolo, first in tonic, then subdominant. The second phrase, played by a clarinet with supporting violin, has a more distinct melody while not venturing beyond dominant and subdominant. The third climactic section features a brass arpeggiated chord similar to the intro's: inversions of the dominant seventh chord. A fourth section based on the second's intonations follows, beginning more quietly but eventually reaching its peak with a tutti. It ends loudly in the tonic, and the track then loops.
