 This box: view  talk  edit

Cutter is a Copy Ability that grants Kirby the ability to throw blade boomerangs as projectiles, or strike enemies up close with them. Typically, this ability gives Kirby a yellow cap with the blade embedded in the top, though other appearances of the ability may leave Kirby largely unchanged until he uses it, with the most noteworthy outlier example being in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards (where Kirby throws a piece of himself as the boomerang). Using this ability, Kirby can slice ropes and foliage from a distance by steering his projectiles, or get up close and defeat foes with the devastating Final Cutter attack.

Cutter first appeared in Kirby's Adventure, making it among the oldest Copy Abilities in the entire series. Since then, it has appeared as an ability in 16 subsequent games, tying Parasol as the most ubiquitous ability in the whole series. Its primary provider is the yellow suit of armor known as Sir Kibble, but many other creatures provide this ability, including Poppy Bros. Jr. with boomerangs, Kapar, the Mid-Boss Kibble Blade, and the projectiles thrown out by Soul-form bosses that use Shooter Cutter as an attack.

Characteristics

Kirby using the Cutter ability to slice a nut off a vine in Kirby Star Allies.

Cutter is among the oldest and most ubiquitous Copy Abilities in the Kirby series, first appearing in Kirby's Adventure and reappearing in every subsequent main-series title, along with several spin-offs. In its most basic form, it gives Kirby the ability to throw bladed boomerang projectiles that travel a short distance in front of him before flying back. While the range forward is rather limited, if Kirby gets out of the way of his boomerang as it returns, it will fly past him and keep traveling until it leaves the screen or hits something. As such, it is often useful for Kirby to use this ability while facing away from his target in order to keep a safer distance.

Various subsequent Kirby games give the Cutter ability more utility. There are several stage devices such as ropes and foliage which can be sliced using Cutter, giving the ability utility outside of simply battling foes. Most games also allow Kirby to steer his boomerang after throwing it, allowing him to reach otherwise difficult spots with his attacks. Games that follow Kirby Super Star's example add a large number of melee attacks to Cutter, allowing Kirby to fight up close with rapid swings of his cutter blade, finishing with the iconic Final Cutter technique. Main-series titles starting with Kirby: Squeak Squad allow Kirby to throw more powerful Cutter blades that pass through their targets (usually after charging up the attack). Lastly, Cutter is readily fused with other elements, producing powerful combinations such as those seen in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards and Kirby Star Allies.

The Cutter Ability's most recognizable provider is the yellow suit of armor called Sir Kibble, who appears in nearly every game that Cutter is featured in. Besides him, there are many more enemies that provide the ability, and it can also be absorbed from the attacks of certain bosses, with the most notable example being Shooter Cutter's projectiles.

Game appearances

Kirby's Adventure / Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land

Cutter Kirby first appearance is Kirby's Adventure, which marks the debut of Copy Abilities. The player can make Kirby throw up to 3 cutters that return like boomerangs by pressing the B button. If Kirby jumps out of the way of his returning cutter, it will fly past him and off the screen, making this ability useful as a long-range attack from behind. Kirby uses the default sprite for this ability.

Kirby's Dream Land 2

Cutter appears as an ability in Kirby's Dream Land 2. When by himself, Cutter Kirby functions identically to how he does in Kirby's Adventure. However, the attack changes character when paired up with Rick, Kine, or Coo. The attack changes as follows:

Animal Friend Appearance Description
Coo
KDL2 Coo Cutter sprite.png
Coo throws three feathers ahead which spread out.
Kine
KDL2 Kine Cutter sprite.png
Lets Kine spit a crescent-shaped laser from his mouth, which grows as it travels further.
Rick
KDL2 Rick Cutter sprite.png
Rick throws Kirby like a boomerang into the direction he is facing.

Throughout Kirby's Dream Land 2, there are specific blocks which can be broken only with the Cutter ability. They are marked with a straight line across them.

Kirby's Dream Land 3

Cutter appears as an ability in Kirby's Dream Land 3. When by himself, Cutter Kirby functions identically to how he does in Kirby's Adventure. However, the attack changes character when paired up with one of the six Animal Friends. The attack changes as follows:

Animal Friend Appearance Description
ChuChu KDL3 Chuchu Cutter sprite.png Kirby swings ChuChu around himself like an axe blade, defeating enemies around him. He cannot throw ChuChu, however.
Coo
KDL3 Coo Cutter sprite.png
Coo throws out a single feather straight ahead.
Kine

Lets Kine spit a crescent-shaped laser from his mouth, which destroys Star Blocks without stopping and shrinks as it travels further until it has fully disappeared.
Nago KDL3 Nago Cutter sprite.png Nago swings Kirby upwards very quickly, creating a crescent-shaped blast of energy that flies diagonally into the sky, defeating enemies in it path.
Pitch
KDL3 Pitch Cutter sprite.png
Pitch is thrown like a boomerang, harming enemies he touches and returning to Kirby. Moving just right can cause Pitch to circle around Kirby indefinitely. Kirby cannot enter doors until he catches the bird again.
Rick
KDL3 Rick Cutter sprite.png
Rick throws Kirby like a boomerang, making him slowly fly through the air and attempt to return to the hamster. If Rick moves just right, it is possible to prevent Kirby from returning to his back, causing him to repeatedly orbit his friend instead.

Throughout Kirby's Dream Land 3, there are specific blocks which can be broken only with the Cutter ability. They are marked with the Cutter icon on them.

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards

The Cutter copy ability undergoes a redesign in the third dimension, in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, though the method used to obtain it is identical to previous versions. Instead of throwing some sort of sharp projectile, Kirby uses his own flesh to produce a boomerang-like weapon that can be used in the same fashion. New to Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards is the process of copy ability upgrading and intermixing - the Cutter ability can be upgraded simply by swallowing two boomerang-like or boomerang-throwing enemies; the new power will be a large, curvaceous projectile that is created from a great percentage of Kirby's small body, not to mention the spikes the boomerang boasts on its outer edge.

Like all copy abilities in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, the Cutter ability can be mixed with other abilities to produce different effects. For example, mixing the Fire and Cutter copy abilities will yield a flaming sword, a power that takes both attributes into account, while intertwining the Bomb and Cutter abilities will yield a explosive throwing-star projectile.

Kirby & The Amazing Mirror / Kirby: Squeak Squad

Cutter returns in these games, acting much as it did in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land and once again provided by Sir Kibble. Unlike its predecessor, the cutter blade can be thrown farther by holding B, and the angle of the cutter blade can be curved vertically with the + Control Pad. Notably, the Final Cutter technique appears in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, but it is not performable using Cutter, instead being attached to Smash, Sword, and Master.

In Kirby: Squeak Squad, an Ability Scroll can be obtained which increases the size of the cutter blade and allows it to pass through multiple targets.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land

The Cutter copy ability is also existent in Kirby's Return to Dream Land. Kirby's Cutter Ability is fairly similar in appearance and functionality to the Cutter Kirby in Kirby Super Star. The Cutter ability is used often to cut ropes, notably, one Energy Sphere in the game requires use of Cutter Boomerang to access, and cannot be accessed with any other ability.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe

Cutter returns in this game, largely unchanged from its appearance in Kirby's Return to Dream Land. Like in most titles, it is most easily obtained by swallowing Sir Kibble. However, it can also be obtained by swallowing Flowery Woods's spinning flowers. It also features as one of the abilities in Kirby Fighters.

Cutter also appears as two collectible Keychains, one using a sprite from Kirby's Dream Land 2, and another with a sprite from Kirby Super Star Ultra.

Kirby Fighters Deluxe

Cutter is one of the selectable Copy Abilities which can be used in this game. Its move-set is largely unchanged from its appearance in Kirby: Triple Deluxe. Upon clearing Single Player mode with the ability once, a Rare Hat that resembles Sir Kibble's helmet is unlocked.

Kirby: Planet Robobot

Cutter returns in this game, largely unchanged from its appearance in Kirby: Triple Deluxe. It can now be used in tandem with the Robobot Armor to form the potent Cutter Mode, which can slice giant wooden beams and chains, and deals massive damage to enemies.

Kirby Battle Royale

Ah, the Cutter ability. Those slashes sure are satisfying. There's nothing like a good charge session...and a Hyper Cutter!
— Knuckle Joe's comment in Kirby Battle Royale

Cutter is one of the first abilities available in Kirby Battle Royale, and is also available along with Sword and Beetle in the Demo version. It is distinguished from the other abilities by its blade projectiles being able to bounce off of walls and other barriers.

There are three alternate pieces of Headgear for the Cutter ability. These are the "Sir Kibble Helmet", the "Mohawk", and the "Knight Helmet".

Kirby and the Forgotten Land

Cutter returns in Kirby and the Forgotten Land. Here, Kirby can use the blade to pick up items from afar as usual and return them to him. Unlike in other games in the series, Cutter's boomerangs are oriented laterally rather than vertically. During his adventures, Kirby can find Blueprints, which can be taken to Waddle Dee's Weapons Shop to evolve the Copy Ability into a new form. Cutter can firstly be evolved into Chakram Cutter, allowing Kirby to wield a pair of chakrams which deal more damage and tend to curve in a direction when returning, and then Buzz-Saw Cutter, allowing Kirby to do this in addition to now throwing large buzzsaws that ricochet off walls.

This ability is one of four accessible in the game's demo. It automatically becomes its evolved form once the three available stages are complete, but this can be reverted back to the original ability if the player so desires.

Moveset

The following is Cutter's moveset in Kirby and the Forgotten Land. All attack names are conjectural:

Cutter moveset in Kirby and the Forgotten Land
Move Button execution Description
Cutter Boomerang B Kirby tosses a bladed boomerang forwards. After a short distance the blade accelerates backwards and returns to Kirby; if Kirby does not catch it, it will travel an indefinite distance horizontally. Unlike in previous titles, this basic Cutter Boomerang can pierce through enemies, potentially hitting them more than once.
Hyper Boomerang Hold B and release By holding B, Kirby freezes the tossed Cutter Boomerang in midair and charges it, and Kirby can move freely while charging. There are 3 levels of charge:
  • Lv 1: The Hyper Boomerang turns yellow, and has the same power as the uncharged Cutter Boomerang when released.
  • Lv 2: The Hyper Boomerang turns red and bigger, and has increased power when released.
  • Lv 3: The Hyper Boomerang turns flashing colors and even bigger, and has further increased power when released.

After releasing B (or over a certain time period at Lv 3), the Hyper Boomerang accelerates backwards and returns to Kirby, and its power is increased as it travels further.

Cleaving Cutter B near an enemy Kirby takes a blade and swipes it forwards.
Final Cutter B + B after Cleaving Cutter After a series of swipes, Kirby leaps upwards and drops downwards, dragging the nearby enemy alongside and shooting out a Beam and a Cutter Boomerang on landing (which can be charged into a Hyper Boomerang by holding B).

Kirby's Dream Buffet

Cutter does not appear as an ability in Kirby's Dream Buffet. However, Cutter Kirby's likeness can be seen on a Character Treat, depicting his sprite from Kirby's Dream Land 2.

Super Smash Bros. Series

Main article: Final Cutter

In the Super Smash Bros series, Final Cutter is Kirby's Up Special Move in all installments. It's useful for recovering, but causes Kirby to plummet off-stage if he misses the ledge. It also shoots out a projectile if Kirby lands on the ground which can lightly knock back opponents. If opponents are hit during the downswing of the blade, they will be sent flying downward at a fixed velocity.

Kirby has transformed! He is now Cutter Kirby! Cutter Kirby can battle his opponents with the cutter on his cap!
— Meta Knight describing Cutter Kirby in The Fofa Factor

In the anime series Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, the Cutter ability makes its first appearance in The Fofa Factor, when Kirby obtains it from the monster Slice n' Splice. The ability functions largely the same in the anime as it does in the games, though its ability to cleave through objects is highly exaggerated.

Unlike many of the other abilities, Cutter has a limited amount of air time. In The Flower Plot, Kirby uses the blade to quickly fell Lovely in a slice done off-camera. In War of the Woods, Kirby throws a quick Hyper Cutter boomerang to split the Royal Racecar in half, thus temporarily foiling King Dedede and Escargoon.

In the Kirby novel series

Kirby gains the Cutter ability in Kirby and the Dangerous Gourmet Mansion?!

In the Kirby novel series, the Cutter ability appears in Kirby and the Dangerous Gourmet Mansion?!, where Kirby obtains it from Sir Kibble. With this Copy Ability, Kirby only uses the Cutter Boomerang move to cut down a large tree.

In Kirby and the Dangerous Gourmet Mansion?!, when Kirby, King Dedede, and Meta Knight are on their quest to save the kidnapped Mrs. Parfaitski, they come across a small ravine. The three notice a bridge, and attempt to cross it. Before they can, a sharp blade suddenly flies out, and cuts the rope holding the suspension bridge, causing it to fall into the ravine. Sir Kibble reveals himself, and attempts to attack the group with more of his boomerang-like blades. Kirby drops the Wheel ability he previously had, which releases Wheelie. Kirby then inhales Sir Kibble to get the Cutter ability. Kirby throws the blade on his head at the tallest, thickest tree he could find to cut it down. The tree falls down and reaches the other side of the ravine, allowing the group to use it as a bridge. Wheelie is forced to lead the way. When the group reaches a cave, Wheelie requests that Kirby releases Sir Kibble so they can explain why they had kidnapped Mrs. Parfaitski. Kirby complies, and drops his Cutter ability to release a dazed and angered Sir Kibble.
