Cutter is an ability primarily obtained by absorbing a boomerang-throwing enemy. This power allows Kirby to perform one of several boomerang-like attacks, the actual variations of which vary between games. It was introduced with a yellow color in Kirby's Adventure, while in Template:KSS KFP it was changed to blue, then yellow again in Kirby's Dream Land 3 and all subsequent games (including Kirby Super Star Ultra, Template:KRtDL KAW and onward).
Characteristics
Cutter is among the oldest and most ubiquitous Copy Abilities in the Kirby series, first appearing in Kirby's Adventure and reappearing in every subsequent main-series title, along with several spin-offs. In its most basic form, it gives Kirby the ability to throw bladed boomerang projectiles that travel a short distance in front of him before flying back. While the range forward is rather limited, if Kirby gets out of the way of his boomerang as it returns, it will fly past him and keep traveling until it leaves the screen or hits something. As such, it is often useful for Kirby to use this ability while facing away from his target in order to keep a safer distance.
Various subsequent Kirby games give the Cutter ability more utility. There are several stage devices such as Ropes and tall grass which can be sliced using Cutter, giving the ability utility outside of simply battling foes. Most games also allow Kirby to steer his boomerang after throwing it, allowing him to reach otherwise difficult spots with his attacks. Games that follow Template:KSS KFP's example add a large number of melee attacks to Cutter, allowing Kirby to fight up close with rapid swings of his cutter blade, finishing with the iconic Final Cutter technique. Main-series titles starting with Template:KSqS KMoA allow Kirby to throw more powerful Cutter blades that pass through their targets (usually after charging up the attack). Lastly, Cutter is readily fused with other elements, producing powerful combinations such as those seen in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards and Kirby Star Allies.
The Cutter Ability's most recognizable provider is the yellow suit of armor called Sir Kibble, who appears in nearly every game that Cutter is featured in. Besides him, there are many more enemies that provide the ability, and it can also be absorbed from the attacks of certain bosses, with the most notable example being Shooter Cutter's projectiles.
Game appearances
Kirby's Adventure / Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land
Cutter Kirby first appearance is Kirby's Adventure, which marks the debut of Copy Abilities. The player can make Kirby throw up to 3 cutters that return like boomerangs by pressing the B button. If Kirby jumps out of the way of his returning cutter, it will fly past him and off the screen, making this ability useful as a long-range attack from behind. Kirby uses the default sprite for this ability.
Kirby's Dream Land 2
Cutter appears as an ability in Kirby's Dream Land 2. When by himself, Cutter Kirby functions identically to how he does in Kirby's Adventure. However, the attack changes character when paired up with Rick, Kine, or Coo. The attack changes as follows:
Animal Friend | Appearance | Description |
---|---|---|
Coo | Coo throws three feathers ahead which spread out. | |
Kine | Lets Kine spit a crescent-shaped laser from his mouth, which grows as it travels further. | |
Rick | Rick throws Kirby like a boomerang into the direction he is facing. |
Throughout Kirby's Dream Land 2, there are specific blocks which can be broken only with the Cutter ability. They are marked with a straight line across them.
Kirby's Dream Land 3
Cutter appears as an ability in Kirby's Dream Land 3. When by himself, Cutter Kirby functions identically to how he does in Kirby's Adventure. However, the attack changes character when paired up with one of the six Animal Friends. The attack changes as follows:
Animal Friend | Appearance | Description |
---|---|---|
ChuChu | Kirby swings ChuChu around himself like an axe blade, defeating enemies around him. He cannot throw ChuChu, however. | |
Coo | Coo throws out a single feather straight ahead. | |
Kine | Lets Kine spit a crescent-shaped laser from his mouth, which destroys Star Blocks without stopping and shrinks as it travels further until it has fully disappeared. | |
Nago | Nago swings Kirby upwards very quickly, creating a crescent-shaped blast of energy that flies diagonally into the sky, defeating enemies in it path. | |
Pitch | Pitch is thrown like a boomerang, harming enemies he touches and returning to Kirby. Moving just right can cause Pitch to circle around Kirby indefinitely. Kirby cannot enter doors until he catches the bird again. | |
Rick | Rick throws Kirby like a boomerang, making him slowly fly through the air and attempt to return to the hamster. If Rick moves just right, it is possible to prevent Kirby from returning to his back, causing him to repeatedly orbit his friend instead. |
Throughout Kirby's Dream Land 3, there are specific blocks which can be broken only with the Cutter ability. They are marked with the Cutter icon on them.
Template:KSS KFP / Kirby Super Star Ultra
In Template:KSS KFP and its remake, Kirby Super Star Ultra, Kirby can also obtain the cutter ability through Copy Essence Deluxes. With the cutter ability equipped, Kirby can create Sir Kibble as a helper. Kirby's visual appearance only changes by the addition of a yellow helmet.

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
The Cutter copy ability undergoes a redesign in the third dimension, in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, though the method used to obtain it is identical to previous versions. Instead of throwing some sort of sharp projectile, Kirby uses his own flesh to produce a boomerang-like weapon that can be used in the same fashion. New to Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards is the process of copy ability upgrading and intermixing - the Cutter ability can be upgraded simply by swallowing two boomerang-like or boomerang-throwing enemies; the new power will be a large, curvaceous projectile that is created from a great percentage of Kirby's small body, not to mention the spikes the boomerang boasts on its outer edge.
Like all copy abilities in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, the Cutter ability can be mixed with other abilities to produce different effects. For example, mixing the Fire and Cutter copy abilities will yield a flaming sword, a power that takes both attributes into account, while intertwining the Bomb and Cutter abilities will yield a explosive throwing-star projectile.
Kirby & The Amazing Mirror / Template:KSqS KMoA
Cutter returns in these games, acting much as it did in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land and once again provided by Sir Kibble. Unlike its predecessor, the cutter blade can be thrown farther by holding B, and the angle of the cutter blade can be curved vertically with the + Control Pad. Notably, the Final Cutter technique appears in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, but it is not performable using Cutter, instead being attached to Smash, Sword, and Master.
In Template:KSqS KMoA, an Ability Scroll can be obtained which increases the size of the cutter blade and allows it to pass through multiple targets.
Template:KRtDL KAW
The Cutter copy ability is also existent in Template:KRtDL KAW. Kirby's Cutter Ability is fairly similar in appearance and functionality to the Cutter Kirby in Template:KSS KFP. The Cutter ability is used often to cut ropes, notably, one Energy Sphere in the game requires use of Cutter Boomerang to access, and cannot be accessed with any other ability.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe
Cutter returns in this game, largely unchanged from its appearance in Template:KRtDL KAW. Like in most titles, it is most easily obtained by swallowing Sir Kibble. However, it can also be obtained by swallowing Flowery Woods's spinning flowers. It also features as one of the abilities in Kirby Fighters.
Cutter also appears as two collectible Keychains, one using a sprite from Kirby's Dream Land 2, and another with a sprite from Kirby Super Star Ultra.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land
Cutter returns in Kirby and the Forgotten Land. Here, Kirby can use the blade to pick up items from afar and return them to him, similar to Whip's ability to grab items. Unlike in other games in the series, Cutter's boomerangs are oriented laterally rather than vertically.
Super Smash Bros. Series
- Main article: Final Cutter
In the Super Smash Bros series, Final Cutter is Kirby's Up Special Move in all installments. It's useful for recovering, but causes Kirby to plummet off-stage if he misses the ledge. It also shoots out a projectile if Kirby lands on the ground which can lightly knock back opponents. If opponents are hit during the downswing of the blade, they will be sent flying downward at a fixed velocity.

“ | Kirby has transformed! He is now Cutter Kirby! Cutter Kirby can battle his opponents with the cutter on his cap! | ” | — Meta Knight describing Cutter Kirby in The Fofa Factor |
In the anime series Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, the Cutter ability makes its first appearance in The Fofa Factor, when Kirby obtains it from the monster Slice n' Splice. The ability functions largely the same in the anime as it does in the games, though its ability to cleave through objects is highly exaggerated.
Unlike many of the other abilities, Cutter has a limited amount of air time. In The Flower Plot, Kirby uses the blade to quickly fell Lovely in a slice done off-camera. In War of the Woods, Kirby throws a quick Hyper Cutter boomerang to split the Royal Racecar in half, thus temporarily foiling King Dedede and Escargoon.
