Kirby's 1-Up

The 1-Up (also referred to as 1 Up) is a popular video game item made famous by the original Super Mario Bros. that rewards the player with an extra life, or another chance to complete a level, stage, or game that they would not be able to after exhausting all previous lives. In the Kirby series especially, this item is a rare find, and it is in Kirby's best interest to obtain the 1-Up wherever it is found, regardless of the circumstances. Unique to the Kirby franchise is in the collection of Stars towards achieving a 1-Up; the ratio of stars to 1-Up varies throughout Kirby's journeys, however, one of the largest amounts needed to garner the 1-Up are in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards and Canvas Curse, where a total of 100 standard yellow Stars is required. Kirby can also gain 1-Ups by playing various mini-games. For example, in Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, in the three Sub-Games Kirby can play during the regular storyline, when played in the storyline, give 3 1-Ups if Kirby got first, 2 if he got second, 1 if he got third, and none if he got last. 1-Ups have different appearances, depending on who the player is playing as. For example, in the Meta Knightmare Sub-Game of Nightmare in Dream Land, instead of Kirby being in the 1-Up, Meta Knight appears.
