Hit the flag with the ball by any means necessary!
— Collection Lists description of Flagball.

Flagball (called Flag Shoot in Japan) is one of the ten Battle types in Kirby: Battle Royale. Contestants play in teams to toss the ball onto their team's flag to score points. The first team to reach 7 points wins.

Overview

Contestants play in a flat 2-D play area on the beach with decked platforms above. In the play area is a single ball and one or two flags representing each team. To score, a team must get the ball on the flag that matches their team colTemplate:Our. Meanwhile, the flags can also be picked up and carried by either team, to make reaching them either easier or harder depending on context. Occasionally, a double flag appears, which is worth 2 points if scored on. The teams' flags may also occasionally be combined into one.

If the ball is sitting still next to the flag, it will only count as a point if it is left there for long enough. To make it count immediately, the ball ha to be tossed or slammed into the flag. This can be seen when the ball has a red or blue streak trailing behind it. The ball can also be used to attack, by tossing it at opponents. The flags can also be used to batter opponents in a similar way, and can be tossed at or slammed into the ball to score. A ball and flag being held simultaneously do not count as a point. It is also possible for a team to score into the wrong flag, giving the point to the other team.

Like with most other battle modes, contestants have Vitality, and can be KO'd to temporarily remove them from the field.

Stages

There are four stages for Flagball. They are as follows:

Beginner's Beach

Several platforms adorn the arena, with the flags occupying small ledges in the upper left and right. As the game comes to a close, the uppermost platforms disappear, and the double flags occupy lower platforms on the left and right.

Flagger Beach

While similar to Beginner's Beach, the platforms are a bit wider, and the flags start on the lower ones.

As the round draw to a close, the flags combine into one, and are given to one team, while the other takes the ball.

Footfall Beach

This stage starts the contestants on the top deck of platforms. The lower decks constantly shift between being up and down, and are unusable when down. The flags are placed close to the teams, while the ball is placed on the sand.

Near the end, the flags combine into one, and are given to one team, while the ball is placed on the other side on the floor.

Lopsided Beach

This stage has an uneven arrangement of platforms, which makes the blue team's flag more difficult to reach.

This stage is available only in Dedede's Cake Royale.

Trivia

  • Flagball is the only one of the 10 battle modes that takes place in a traditional 2-D format.
  • Unlike in Crazy Theater, contestants' health is not restored after a point is scored.
