Before collection, Keychains resemble silver, floating baubles with a blue core, having question marks on said cores. Connecting the main body and a star-shaped key ring is a metal ball chain (gold for the rarer counterpart). Keychains represent various sprites from earlier sprite-based 2D Kirby adventures (as well as original artwork representing characters from non-sprite-based games Kirby's Epic Yarn, KRDL KAW, and Kirby: Triple Deluxe). Keychains can be viewed and looked at in closer detail in the Keychain Collection menu, accessible from the File Menu or the Story Mode World Map.

There are 256 Keychains in total, and they come in two types: Normal and Rare (which are golden-colored, with a rainbow core, and have golden wings in addition). Normal Keychains are randomly obtained. Rare Keychains are unique, however, and can be found only in particular places in Story Mode, one in each stage (excluding Boss stages). Once the stage or mode is complete, any collected Keychains will be uncovered and added to the collection. It is possible to obtain the same type of Normal Keychain more than once.

Once the stage or mode is complete, any collected Keychains will be uncovered and added to the collection. Normal Keychains are randomly obtained. Generally, the selection will favor new kinds of Keychains, but it is possible to obtain the same type of Keychain more than once. Rare Keychains are unique, however, and can be found only in particular places in Story Mode, one in each stage (excluding Boss stages). After a Rare Keychain is collected, subsequent visits to that stage will have a normal Keychain in its spot; therefore, only one of each Rare Keychain can typically be collected.

After a Rare Keychain is collected, subsequent visits will only yield a Normal Keychain.
Additionally, Keychains can be shared with other players via StreetPass, as one of the items thrown out by Bandanna Waddle Dee. Doing so will occasionally allow players to obtain a Rare Keychain, in addition to normal Keychains. Once 10 of the same Keychain have been collected, no more duplicates of that Keychain will appear; this is indicated in the Keychain Collection by its standard green pin being replaced by an orange star-shaped pin. It is very rare to see a Gold Keychain with the star-shaped pin, but it is possible, as duplicates can be obtained through dedicated StreetPassing.

Keychains can also be seen on the main menu, with a selection of Keychains unique to each file appearing on the top screen. They start out randomly selected, but starting at around 70% completion, they will appear in a formation following a pre-set theme (for example, characters from the same game, or different varieties of a particular character). In both the main menu and the Keychain Collecting menu, Keychains are affected by the 3DS gyroscope and will tilt and jingle with proper respect to gravity.

Kracko and King Dedede both utilize Keychains as part of their movesets in Kirby Fighters Deluxe, tossing them against the screen to obscure the player's view. In Dedede's case, he will always throw out keychains that depict himself; in Very Hard mode, he will throw out Rare Keychains that do not appear in Triple Deluxe.
In Dedede's Drum Dash Deluxe, a hidden Keychain appears in each stage. The normal stages all have a Keychain that depicts Kirby's sprite from Kirby's Adventure, while the extra stages have wider variety of characters.
