*Dark Matter is depicted with varying consistency over the number of balls he has. The most common is ten, as seen in most artwork and sprites for ''[[Kirby's Dream Land 2]]'' and ''[[Kirby's Dream Land 3]]'', along with artwork based on those sprites. Most of the time, not all of his balls can be seen at once, but Dark Matter is consistently shown to be horizontally symmetrical. Other numbers include:

**'''Twelve''' are seen on the Dark Matter seen in the [[Kirby of the Stars Pilot]]. '''Eight''' are seen on the model shown as the [[Dark Matter Clone]] is defeated in ''[[Kirby: Planet Robobot]]''. This same number is also shown for a brief moment as Dark Matter forms in the battle in Hyper Zone, as well as during attacks where he attempts to strike Kirby and/or Gooey with his balls. [[Gooey]]'s Mock Matter form has '''six or seven''' orange balls depending on the situation. ''Kirby's Dream Land 3'' features seven balls, and ''[[Kirby Star Allies]]'' and ''[[Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe]]'' feature six. While not a normal member of the Dark Matter species, [[Zero]] has '''no balls'''. Similarly, Dark Rimuru, Dark Rimura, and Dark Rimuro feature none, despite functioning identically to the Dark Matter specimen named Dark Matter. However, this is likely a simple graphical choice due to how the model was made.
