''Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe'' features the same story as the original game in its Main Mode. In it, [[Kirby]], [[King Dedede]], [[Meta Knight]], and [[Bandana Waddle Dee]] have their merry peaceful day in [[Dream Land]] interrupted when [[Magolor]] comes crashing in from [[Another Dimension]] on his ship - the [[Lor Starcutter]] - which flies into pieces that scatter all around the world of [[Popstar]]. Kirby, kind soul that he is, agrees to help the stranger Magolor get his ship parts back, so he and his friends go adventuring across the land to recover them, having to fight off certain [[boss|powerful opponents]] to get the larger pieces. Once the Lor is back together again, its grateful captain thanks Kirby and his friends by taking them on a cruise to his "homeworld" [[Halcandra]], where they are subsequently attacked by a ferocious four-headed dragon named [[Landia]]. 

Magolor urges Kirby to go and defeat the dragon for him, so he does so, knocking the dragon's [[Master Crown|crown]] off his highest head in the process. Magolor then shows up and takes this crown, placing it on his head and transforming into a big menacing apparition. Magolor reveals that he had actually tricked Kirby into defeating Landia so he could take this artifact for his own, and declares that he will now use its power to take over the universe, starting with Popstar. To stop him, Landia teams up with Kirby and his friends to chase Magolor into Another Dimension and they defeat him in the end, shattering the crown and banishing Magolor to parts unknown. Kirby and friends are subsequently taken home by Landia and the Lor before the dimension collapses in on them, resolving the conflict.

New to this game, an [[Extra Mode]] called [[Magolor Epilogue: The Interdimensional Traveler]] features Magolor as the main playable character. In it, after he is defeated in the main story, Magolor is cast adrift through Another Dimension and loses most of his magical power. He has to traverse various otherworldly realms and slowly build his magic back so that he can find a way back home. He does this by finding various magical artifacts known as [[Fruit Fragment]]s which congregate at an old abandoned [[Ethereal Altar]]. Once all the fragments are found, they coalesce into a magical crystal fruit which is then stolen by [[Crowned Doomer|a ghostly being]] possessed by the shards of the broken Master Crown. When Magolor defeats this beast, the shards then fuse directly with the fruit to form a giant tree-like apparition which Magolor has to defeat using his own version of the Ultra Sword. After presumably destroying the Master Crown for good, Magolor is able to leave through a [[dimensional rift]] into the [[Dream Kingdom]], where he takes on a new role as the owner of [[Magolor's Shoppe|a shop]].

This Extra Mode features new stages and souped-up versions of bosses from the main game. It can also be played with up to four players, though all of them play as different colored Magolors. While significantly shorter than the main adventure, Magolor Epilogue features a fresh take on the ''Kirby'' formula, using its progression system for Magolor as well as an emphasis on scoring combos on enemies.

*Several bits of flavor text from the original game have been rewritten in the remake's Japanese script, although most changes are minor (for example, adding a first person pronoun in Bandana Waddle Dee's description). In English and most translations, a good part of the text was retranslated, causing some changes compared to the original, some bigger than others. As a result of having more room for text compared to the original, the new text is longer and generally more accurate to the original Japanese script on the whole.
*The player can choose to enter Main Mode or Merry Magoland directly after choosing a file.

On February 8th, 2023, a demo version of ''Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe'' was released to the public via [[wikipedia:Nintendo eShop|Nintendo eShop]]. This demo features the opening [[cutscene]] for the game, as well as limited access to the Main Mode and to Merry Magoland. In the Main Mode, the player has access to the [[Lor Starcutter]], as well as a few stages in [[Cookie Country]]. The first two of these stages are compilations of areas from Cookie Country and early [[Raisin Ruins]] stages, while the third and last is the boss stage against [[Whispy Woods]]. Merry Magoland is unlocked after clearing the first stage. After clearing Whispy Woods, a few more Copy Abilities are made available inside the Testing Area in the Lor Starcutter, and Whispy Woods EX is unlocked. In addition, defeating Whispy Woods or Whispy Woods EX triggers a movie that showcases features from the full game, including the Magolor Epilogue.

Notably, a [[HAL Room]] is accessible from the second stage in the demo, though it has a different set of [[Copy Essence]]s than it does in the main game.
