Water Kirby can surf on a form of water he creates, thus being able to easily traverse through lava. He can also neutralize lava blocks (though not lava itself) using the ability, making it a requirement to access some areas and [[Energy Sphere]]s. Kirby can also spit water downwards and hover, destroying enemies along the way, as well as shoot water upwards. In addition, Water Kirby has a more powerful [[Water Gun]], blowing out three water pulses rather than one.

Although previously appearing in ''[[Kirby: Right Back at Ya!]]'' and the canceled ''[[Kirby for Nintendo GameCube]]'', Water properly debuted as an ability in ''[[Kirby's Return to Dream Land]]'' and also appears in its remake, ''[[Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe]]''. Kirby can get this ability chiefly by swallowing [[Water Galbo]], [[Pluid]] or [[Water Galboros]], though a few other sources exist as well. The main strength of Water is allowing Kirby to surf quickly over his foes, traverse fiery areas more safely, and gain an enhanced [[Water Gun]] underwater.

One of the [[Challenge Stage]]s revolves around the Water Ability.

The main enemy who provides this ability is [[Driblee]], who also represents the ability as its [[Helper|Friend]]. It can be used in a number of [[Friend Ability|Friend Abilities]] including [[Curling|Splash Curling]] and [[Icicle Lance]]. Water actually first appeared as a Copy Ability in ''[[Kirby: Right Back at Ya!]]''. It makes a single appearance in the episode [[Air-Ride-in-Style - Part II]] as the result of it being one of the winners in the Japan-only ''[[Kirby of the Stars: New Ability Contest]]'' (being submitted by Takahiro Tonoe from Aichi prefecture). However, it is only used in a dream sequence, making its [[Continuity|canonicity]] questionable. Kirby gains this ability by inhaling large amounts of water from the ocean.

Water Kirby in the anime bears a somewhat different design to his later appearance in the games. He has a slightly different crown and his body has a blue, translucent, water-like texture. Despite this, the ability functions largely the same as it would later, as Kirby uses spouts of water from his mouth to attack. Notably, the ability allows him to use the [[Water Gun]] outside of water in this instance.
