Apples serve many differing roles within the Kirby series, appearing either as hazards to be avoided, food to be eaten, or in some other capacity. Apples are most commonly associated with Whispy Woods who almost always drops them during fights, but they can be dropped by other entities as well.

When not trying to avoid having them dropped on his head, Kirby is quite fond of eating apples, either inhaling them whole or taking bites out of them in cutscenes. Despite this, apples do not normally appear as food in most games, particularly in those which feature apples as hazardous objects.

Apples are inanimate objects about the size of Kirby, usually dropped by Whispy Woods, that can damage playable characters on contact. They yield no Copy Ability when swallowed, nor do they restore health. As such, their main use is as ammunition against Whispy Woods or other enemies that use them, such as Poppy Bros. Jr., who can sometimes be seen balancing on them.
Apples are inanimate objects, usually dropped by Whispy Woods, that can damage Kirby or another playable character on contact. They yield no Copy Ability when swallowed, nor do they restore Vitality, so their only real use is to spit back at Whispy with.

Against common expectation, apples appear far more often as hazards to be avoided in the Kirby series than otherwise. This tradition started with Kirby's Dream Land and has persisted throughout the entire series, with only a few games assigning apples to other roles.

Game appearances
Kirby's Dream Land
Apples first appear in Kirby's Dream Land. They can mainly be seen in the Green Greens stage, either being balanced on by Poppy Bros. Jr. or being dropped from Whispy Woods' canopy. Apples are worth 400 points when destroyed.

Kirby's Adventure / Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land
Apples return Kirby's Adventure and its remake, serving the same purpose as before.

Kirby's Pinball Land
Apples appear as destructible bumpers in Kirby's Pinball Land, appearing in all three Pinball Lands. They are mainly seen during the fight with Whispy Woods and are worth 1600 points when collided with.

Kirby's Dream Land 2
Apples reappear in Kirby's Dream Land 2, once again associated with Whispy Woods and Poppy Bros. Jr.. They also appear as hazards in the Bonus Chance with Whispy.

Kirby Super Star / Kirby Super Star Ultra
Apples reprise their role in Kirby Super Star and its remake, once again being associated with Whispy Woods and his variants, along with Poppy Bros. Jr.. In Kirby Super Star Ultra, poison apples can also appear, which are not safe to inhale.

Kirby's Dream Land 3
Apples appear in Kirby's Dream Land 3 along with Whispy Woods, though this time, they are not the only produce that he drops.

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
Apples make their 3D debut in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, once again being dropped by Whispy Woods.

Kirby's Epic Yarn / Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn
Although not strictly treated as enemies in this game, Whispy Woods fires apples as projectiles in the Whispy's Forest stage.

Kirby's Return to Dream Land / Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe
Apples appear in Kirby's Return to Dream Land and its remake, again being dropped by Whispy Woods. They can also be summoned by Magolor's second form and Magolor Soul when using Calling Shot. Poison apples also make an appearance, being exclusively used by Whispy Woods EX in Extra Mode.

Team Kirby Clash Deluxe / Super Kirby Clash
Whispy Woods and his apples serve in both battles in Team Kirby Clash Deluxe and all three battles in Super Kirby Clash. In his Tougher-rank Quests, some of the apples can sprout leaves which lets them fly.

Kirby Star Allies
Apples return alongside Whispy Woods in Kirby Star Allies, and are also dropped by Parallel Woods. In addition, they can both drop special hot fruit on vines which grant the Fire ability when swallowed, or can be struck with an opposing element to produce goodies.

Kirby Fighters 2
In cut-scenes, such as those in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards, Kirby can be seen eating an apple and enjoying it, but counter-intuitively enough, in-game apples are not Food items, and will in fact harm Kirby if he touches them. Their main use is as ammunition against Whispy Woods or other enemies that use them, such as Poppy Bros. Jr., who can sometimes be seen balancing on one.
In Kirby Fighters 2, apples can once again be tossed by King Dedede as a hazard in Dedede Arena.

Apples, both regular and flying varieties, also appear when fighting Twin Woods in Story Mode: The Destined Rivals.
Kirby: Battle Royale
clear
In the Apple Scramble game, the objective is to grab as many Apples as possible from Mini Whispy Woods and deposit them in the collection area. Kirby can stack a great many apples over his head as he runs, but other Kirbys can attack him to get his apples. Red apples are each worth 1 point, but golden apples are worth 5. Additionally, apples can be tossed at rival Kirbys to knock them down.

As a non-hazardous object
There are a few instances in the series where apples do not appear as hazardous objects, appearing instead either as food, as usable objects, or as props in cutscenes.

Game appearances
Kirby's Dream Land
In the ending cutscene of Kirby's Dream Land, apples can be seen among the many types of food raining down onto Dream Land while Kirby says his bye-bye.

Kirby Super Star / Kirby Super Star Ultra
At the end of the Dyna Blade game, Kirby is seen using Whispy Woods' apples to feed Dyna Blade's chicks.

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
In the cutscene which plays after clearing Rock Star, Adeleine paints food for her companions. She paints an apple for Kirby to eat.

Kirby's Epic Yarn / Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn
A number of Furniture pieces in Kirby's Epic Yarn either include or are themed after apples. This includes the Apple Table, the Fruit Bowl and the Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn-exclusive Apple Juice Tower.

Kirby Mass Attack
Fruit
Apples appear as common collectable objects in Kirby Mass Attack. If a Kirby touches one, he will eat it, gaining a fruit point and 50 score points in the process. Gaining 100 fruit points results in a new Kirby being created. Some switches in the game spawn green apples which can be collected for a reward. If not collected in time they disappear and the Kirbys miss out on their reward. These still give the Kirbys fruit points and score.

Kirby: Triple Deluxe
In the opening cutscene of the game, Kirby can be seen having munched on some apples before taking a nap under a tree.

Team Kirby Clash Deluxe / Super Kirby Clash
Gem Apple
The primary currency in both Kirby Clash games comes in the form of Gem Apples, which can be obtained in various different ways, and are primarily spent at Magolor's Shoppe. Gem Apples also make minor appearances in various other games.

Kirby Battle Royale
In the Apple Scramble game, the objective is to grab as many Apples as possible from Mini Whispy Woods and deposit them in the collection area. Kirby can stack many apples over his head as he runs (up to 20, though this is rarely seen), but other Kirbys can attack him to get his apples. Red apples are each worth 1 point, but golden apples are worth 5. Additionally, apples can be tossed at rival Kirbys to knock them down.

Apples also appear in Crazy Theater, where the goal is sometimes to carry a specified amount of them before opponents do.

During the Magolor Soul fight in The True Arena of Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, the boss spits out a single apple before the start of the second phase, which can be eaten by the players to restore their health. Notably, this is the only instance of this food item being spawned in the entire game.
