This article is about the large gorilla-like boss from Kirby's Return to Dream Land, and should not be confused with Gorimondo.

Goriath is a yeti-like boss that appears in Kirby's Return to Dream Land. It appears as the boss of White Wafers and guards the Lor Starcutter's Emblem. Most of its attacks are direct melee attacks, such as punches and stomps, though it will also climb the walls and throw objects such as snowballs, or shoot beams from its hand (similar to Fighter Kirby).

Characteristics

Goriath's body is somewhat pear-shaped, its face taking up most of its area. This makes its physique similar to a Waddle Dee, though its feet and arms are more defined. Its fur covers his body, which is largely white in tone, though it has red accents near the hands. Its skin is tan, and its face resembles that of an ape, with baboon-like red marks on its cheeks. It also sports a long beard and a similarly long tuft of hair on its head, which is gray in color.

When Goriath is knocked down to half health, it charges up and its beard and hair tuft turn golden. It also begins to glow and its eyes turn red.

In Extra Mode, Goriath's skin is dark gray, its eyes are white, its face marks are of several colors (ranging from blue to lavender), its hair tuft and beard have a blue tint at first, and its wrist hair is brown. These changes make it resemble a mandrill more than a baboon.

Goriath's appearance in the second phase of the fight

In Kirby's Return to Dream Land, when Kirby enters the arena Goriath is fought in, the big ape jumps down from the sky. It beats down upon the ground, causing the stage to crumble beneath its mighty blows.

Goriath has a unique feature to its boss fight, in that, as the fight progresses, it will pound the stage to make it crumble, causing everyone to fall to a lower stage with a different layout. This is done up to four times before the fight is over.

The following lists all of Goriath's attacks in the Main Mode of Kirby's Return to Dream Land. Attacks in italics are used in the second phase of the fight only. Most attack names are derived from official Japanese strategy guides, while others are conjectural.

Attacks - Main Mode
Attack Description
Wall Jump[conjectural title]
Goriath climbs a wall, then jumps back and forth between them. It may jump off the wall to pound the ground, creating stars.
雪玉&氷塊
Snowballs & Ice
While on a wall, Goriath tosses snowballs at Kirby, which can be swallowed for the Ice Copy Ability. In the second phase, it may also throw spiked ice balls with a different trajectory.
グルグルパンチ
Spinning Punch
On the ground, Goriath charges up a punch, then extends its arm all the way across the stage in an impressive feat of flexibility aimed at Kirby. A star appears where the punch lands.
Ground Pound[conjectural title]
On the ground, Goriath jumps up, then slams the ground, creating stars.
ブリザードはどう
Force Blizzard
Goriath forms and fires a series of energy blasts, shooting three at different angles. Each one creates a star when it impacts the wall.
Super Ricochet[conjectural title]
Goriath charges up on a wall, then starts rapidly ricocheting all over the stage, creating stars where it lands.
ツララ落とし
Icicle Drop
Goriath pounds the ground, making icicles appear mysteriously from above to fall. These can also be swallowed for the Ice ability.

In Extra Mode, Goriath's attacks are generally more punishing, and it sports a couple new ones as well:

Attacks - Extra Mode
Attack Description
Wall Jump[conjectural title]
Goriath climbs a wall, then jumps back and forth between them. It may jump off the wall to pound the ground, creating spiked ice balls. Jumps faster than in the Main Mode.
雪玉&氷塊
Snowballs & Ice
While on a wall, Goriath tosses snowballs at Kirby, which can be swallowed for the Ice Copy Ability. These are larger than in the Main Mode. In the second phase, it may also throw spiked ice balls with a different trajectory that explode on impact.
グルグルパンチ
Spinning Punch
On the ground, Goriath charges up a punch, then extends its arm all the way across the stage in an impressive feat of flexibility aimed at Kirby. A star appears where the punch lands. Punches twice in a row.
Ground Pound[conjectural title]
On the ground, Goriath jumps up, then slams the ground, creating spiked ice balls that fly out on both sides.
エネルギー玉
Energy Ball
Goriath rises into the air, then charges a gigantic ball of energy, which passes through the center of the stage. After it goes down, it creates a shock wave that sends any grounded characters flying and creates two stars that bounce onto the stage.
ブリザードはどう
Force Blizzard
Goriath forms and fires a series of energy blasts, shooting several at different angles. Each one creates a star when it impacts the wall. More numerous and covers greater ground than in the Main Mode.
Super Ricochet[conjectural title]
Goriath charges up on a wall, then starts rapidly ricocheting all over the stage, creating stars where it lands. Even faster than in the Main Mode.
ツララ落とし
Icicle Drop
Goriath pounds the ground, making icicles appear from above to fall. These can also be swallowed for the Ice ability.

When Goriath is defeated, it reverts to its look before the second phase and gets knocked into the background, where it cartoonishly falls to its doom.

Cameo appearances

This hat is designed to look like a mighty ape who lives in icy heights.
— Goriath Hat description from Kirby Battle Royale

In Kirby Battle Royale, one of the pieces of Headgear for the Fighter ability is a hat that is based on Goriath, named the Goriath Hat, and costs 3000 Battle Coins. The same hat returns in Kirby Fighters 2, where it is unlocked at a Fighters Rank of 85.

Trivia

  • When Goriath's health drops below the half-way point, its hair turns golden and it begins to glow, and it is able to fire beams from its hand. This could be a vague nod to the Dragon Ball anime series.
  • The name "Goriath" is a portmanteau of the words "gorilla" and "Goliath". Despite this, it really isn't that large, especially compared to Kirby's height of only eight inches.
  • Goriath is the only boss in Kirby's Return to Dream Land (and one of the few bosses in the entire series) who can change their stage's layout. Goriath does so by smashing the ground with its fists.
  • In Kirby and the Forgotten Land, the boss Gorimondo reuses many of Goriath's sound effects in battle, in addition to their similar names.
