As pointed out in the pause quote, the only part of Coily Rattler that can be damaged is the head. This is not usually an issue, as many of Coily's attacks leave its head exposed, and often attacks that don't appear to hit the head still will.

A giant snake statue revered by the People of the Sky since the dawn of time. Its body lies sheathed in celestial golden armor, but the old texts say that its head lacks protection!
— Triple Deluxe Boss description. This reveals how it can be damaged.

Coily Rattler is a boss from Kirby: Triple Deluxe. It resembles a large rattlesnake, but is made entirely of rounded metal segments, and can be considered thus a robot or snake puppet. It attacks by using its body in various ways, including snaking around the stage, striking with its rattle, and biting, following up by carrying its victim across the stage. Coily Rattler can also split into several pieces and attack by raining itself down onto the stage. Coily Rattler is the boss of Triple Deluxe's fourth Level, Wild World, and it is also battled in The Arena and Stage 2 of Royal Road.

Battle[edit]

Kirby hovers above the coiling beast using his Spear.

The battle initiates when Kirby enters the temple in Wild World. After he makes his way through the boss door, he sees Taranza in front of a statue where Coily Rattler is depicted. Taranza then uses his magic to animate the statue, and Coily Rattler is brought back to life. The now sentient statue and Kirby then face off.

The following lists all of Coily Rattler's attacks in Story Mode and The Arena in Kirby: Triple Deluxe. Most attack names are taken from official Japanese strategy guides, while others are conjectural.

Coily Rattler's attacks
Attack Description
Rock Spit
Coily Rattler uses this move most often. It fires three burning rocks from its mouth aimed at Kirby. These can be swallowed for the Fire Ability. Coily Rattler may also do this move from the background after slithering off the stage. In the second phase, Coily Rattler will first dive under the stage, then stick its head up to spit the rocks, finishing by occupying the area where it stopped. It may also fire several rocks while in the background.
Slither
Coily Rattler snakes its way across the stage, covering much of the ground.
Spiral Attack
Coily Rattler flies into the air, then crashes down at Kirby's last position, creating stars when it lands. In the second phase, it may perform multiple slams.
Whip Tail
Coily Rattler approaches Kirby, shaking its tail as it does so. Then, Coily Rattler swipes its tail several times, leaving stars every time it hits the ground.
Rattler Wheel
Coily Rattler curls up into a tight ball and rolls across the stage, leaving small stars in a continuous trail. On the underside, it could either continue rolling in the direction it started in, or turn around and roll back in the opposite direction.
Second phase only
Coiled Slither
Coily Rattler moves across the stage by wrapping around it, making it more difficult to hit in the process.
Disassembled Body
After slithering off stage, Coily Rattler appears in the background, then flies apart into several segments, which then come raining down onto the stage. Its head comes down last, leaving stars when it impacts the ground.
Donut Attack
Coily Rattler starts spinning wildly in a loop on the stage, burning as it does so. It then moves toward Kirby in an attempt to hit him.
Bite Capture
Coily Rattler appears at the top of the screen after leaving the stage, only its head poking out. After a short time, it dashes at Kirby in an attempt to grab him in its mouth. It leaves stars on impact if it doesn't hit, and tries again. If successful, it drags Kirby across the background, dealing continuous damage as it does so, finishing off by violently spitting him out onto the stage. This is its strongest move.

As pointed out in the pause quote, the only part of Coily Rattler that can be damaged is the head. This is not usually an issue, as many of Coily's attacks leave its head exposed, and often attacks that don't appear to hit the head still will.

Upon defeat, Coily Rattler attempts to flee to the background, but then reverts to statue form and crumbles piece-by-piece, its head flying back onto the stage before shattering and revealing the Grand Sun Stone for Kirby to collect.

Kirby: Planet Robobot[edit]

Coily Rattler appears in hologram form in this title, conjured by the Holo Defense API. It fights in a largely similar manner, but it can leave conflagrations of sparks when it moves and splits apart.

Coily Rattler DX[edit]

This statuesque snake was once seen by the People of the Sky as a symbol of peace. However, it's since been corrupted by an evil magic and has become a scourge on the land.
— Triple Deluxe Boss description
Coily Rattler DX.
King Dedede battles Coily Rattler

Coily Rattler also possesses a DX version in Kirby: Triple Deluxe, which is more powerful. It has long red horns, a blue stone on its grayish face, and silver and yellow armor. It is encountered in Dededetour! and The True Arena.

In Dededetour!, instead of being brought to life by Taranza, Coily Rattler DX seems to bring itself to life without help.

The following lists all of Coily Rattler DX's attacks in Dededetour! and The True Arena.

Coily Rattler DX's attacks
Attack Description
Rock Spit
Coily Rattler DX uses this move most often. It fires five burning rocks from its mouth aimed at Kirby or Dedede. It first fires two, then fires three relatively fast.
Slither
Coily Rattler DX snakes its way across the stage, covering much of the ground. It can increase its speed while using this move.
Spiral Attack
Coily Rattler DX flies into the air, then crashes down at Kirby's or Dedede's last position, creating stars when it lands. It may perform multiple slams.
Whip Tail
Coily Rattler DX approaches Kirby, shaking its tail as it does so. Then, Coily Rattler DX swipes its tail several times, leaving stars every time it hits the ground.
Second phase only
Coiled Slither
Coily Rattler DX moves across the stage by wrapping around it, making it more difficult to hit in the process. It uses this move two times.
Disassembled Body
After slithering off stage, Coily Rattler DX appears in the background, then flies apart into several segments, which then come flying down over the stage. Its head comes down last, jumping upward in an attempt to catch Kirby or Dedede.
Donut Attack
Coily Rattler DX starts spinning wildly in a loop on the stage, burning as it does so. It then moves toward Kirby or Dedede in an attempt to hit them. It moves halfway forward, then back, before finishing with dashing forward.
Bite Capture
Coily Rattler DX appears at the top of the screen after leaving the stage, only its head poking out. After a short time, it backs out two times before dashing at Kirby or Dedede in an attempt to grab them in its mouth after its third try. It leaves stars on impact if it doesn't hit, and tries again two times. If successful, it drags Kirby or Dedede across the background, dealing continuous damage as it does so, finishing off by violently spitting them out onto the screen. This is its strongest move.
Rattler Wheel
Coily Rattler DX curls up into a tight ball and rolls across the stage, leaving small stars in a continuous trail. On the underside, it could either continue rolling in the direction it started in, or turn around and roll back in the opposite direction. After coming back up, it will jump over the stage and roll back to where it started.

Trivia[edit]

Concept art of Coily Rattler- (left) and Wham Bam Jewel-inspired (right) gear for Super Kirby Clash.
  • Coily Rattler is the only boss to start out on the left. However, its introduction cutscene shows it on the right. Then, after it is animated, its statue falls off and comes back on the left.
  • Coily Rattler's name is ironic, as its tail does not have a rattle. Its body does make a rattling noise during many of its attacks, however.
  • Coily Rattler-inspired gear for Doctor Healmore was considered to appear in Super Kirby Clash; however, it was scrapped.
