Stone first appeared in ''[[Kirby's Adventure]]'', and is typically provided by [[Rocky]] or [[Blocky]]. Other rarer providers of the ability include [[Gansan]], [[Cairn]], [[Moundo]], [[Golem]], and [[Hack]]. Certain boss attacks, like those of [[Wham Bam Rock]], [[King Golem]], or [[Clanky Woods]], may also provide the ability.

Stone is among the simplest and most straightforward of Kirby's Copy Abilities, though it has a lot of variants and emergent uses. In its simplest form, Kirby transforms into a solid immobile object which is affected only by gravity. In this state, Kirby becomes immune to all but the strongest enemy attacks, though this is counterbalanced by the fact that his movement options become extremely limited if not completely absent. Due to the amount of time it often takes for Kirby to use his Stone Change, whether turning into the stone or transforming back to normal, it is often impractical to use Stone offensively, particularly during boss fights. When transformed, Stone Kirby falls extremely quickly, which is useful for certain vertical stage sections, but Kirby should be careful not to fall too far in many places, as he might be lost to a [[bottomless pit]] before he can change back. Falling into a hazardous area like a [[spike]] pit can also be problematic, as Kirby is basically guaranteed to take a hit as soon as he transforms back. One other notable aspect of Stone Kirby in most of his appearances is his ability to slide down slopes, which can be used in many cases to travel quickly and safely through tight tunnels packed with enemies. Stone Kirby's heavy weight also allows him to quickly sink in water, pound [[Stake]]s, and break [[metal block]]s.

Stone makes its debut along with the concept of [[Copy Ability|Copy Abilities]] themselves in ''[[Kirby's Adventure]]''. This game establishes Stone as an ability that causes Kirby to transform into a rock, and plummet downward, becoming all but invulnerable and dealing damage on impact. However, Stone Kirby's signature ability to slide down slopes is not present in this game, nor is it in the remake, ''[[Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land]]''. Kirby also only has one form here, that being a pink-ish rock with a level bottom and two closed eyes on it. The ability is provided solely by [[Rocky]] or via a [[Mix]].
