Clanky Woods is a mechanized version of Whispy Woods that appears in Kirby: Planet Robobot, appearing primarily as the boss of Patched Plains; the first level of the game. Among other things, the Haltmann Works Company outfitted Clanky Woods with spider-like legs with drills for tips, which greatly increases its mobility and attack power, along with parts that allow it to shoot missiles and modify the environment using a giant screw. Kirby first encounters this mechanical monstrosity in Stage 1 of the level, where he has to outrun it, but later fights the boss in proper fashion in a circular arena. Much later on, Clanky Woods appears again in Stage 8 EX of Access Ark, where Kirby dispatches it much more quickly using the Robobot ArmTemplate:Or. In Meta Knightmare Returns and The True Arena, Clanky Woods is upgraded into Clanky Woods 2.0 instead.

Game appearances

Kirby: Planet Robobot

In its debut appearance, Clanky Woods is encountered three times during the story. Its first appearance is toward the end of Stage 1 of Patched Plains. After Kirby enters the area, a bunch of fleeing Waddle Dees pass him by. From there, Clanky enters the scene using its four drill legs, roars upon noticing Kirby, and starts to chase him down. During this phase, Clanky can be attacked and defeated, but it is only necessary to escape it by continuing to the left. Defeating Clanky here however, will reward Kirby with the stage's rare sticker.

Boss Fight

Clanky uses a Drill Drop in Phase 1 of the fight.

The second time it is encountered is in the Boss stage itself. It first appears on a platform resembling half a ring, roars at Kirby once again, then the fight begins.

The following lists all of Clanky Woods' attacks in Kirby: Planet Robobot.

Clanky Woods attacks in a fixed order on loop in Story Mode and The Arena as follows:

Attacks - Phase 1
Attack Description
Missiles
Clanky shoots two missiles out of its mouth cannon, which weakly home in on Kirby. These can be inhaled for the Bomb ability or spat back.
Drill Attack
Clanky drills into the ground with its front legs, causing boulders to fly out of the ground. These can be inhaled for the Stone ability or spat back.
Canopy Barrage
Clanky jumps into the air, then hangs up-side down above Kirby, shaking its canopy until pieces fall off to hit him. These pieces explode, but can be disabled by destroying or inhaling them.
Slam
When returning to the stage, Clanky can hurt Kirby by falling on top of him.
Drill Slam
Clanky hops into the air, then lands with legs extended onto the ground, drilling that spot, causing inhalable boulders to fling out on both sides.
Clanky Woods attempts a Dash Charge in Phase 2 of the fight.

When Clanky is knocked down to half of its stamina, it falls off the stage. Then the platform is extended to include an extra semi-circle ring half to make the full ring. Clanky then emerges from a large screw platform in the middle, jumps on the back-side of the ring and roars again. The fight then continues, with Kirby and Clanky battling around the ring, as opposed to the flat area earlier.

Attacks - Phase 2
Attack Description
Dash Charge
Clanky halts, then begins dashing around the ring very quickly, leaving three stars behind it as it does so. Covers nearly a full lap of the ring. When Clanky performs its dash around the ring arena, it will slow down when it is sufficiently close to Kirby.
Drill Attack
Clanky drills into the ground with its front legs, causing boulders to fly out of the ground. These can be inhaled and spat back.
Drill Slam
Clanky hops into the air, then lands with legs extended onto the ground, drilling that spot, causing inhalable boulders to fling out on both sides.
Missiles
Clanky shoots two missiles out if its mouth cannon, which weakly home in on Kirby. These can be inhaled and spat back.

In this phase, Clanky Woods will always start with the Dash Charge and Drill Attack moves. After that, its attacks are primarily based on Kirby's positioning.

Drills enter Kirby's space while Clanky sits in the background in Phase 3 of the fight.

When Clanky's stamina is nearly depleted, it causes all the sections of the ring that Kirby is not standing on to rise up, forming walls and trapping Kirby in a narrow space. Clanky then occupies the central area, where it cannot be directly hit, much like HR-D3's first phase in Template:KRtDL KAW. It can still be hit when performing certain attacks, however.

Attacks - Phase 3
Attack Description
Drill Cannons
Clanky jumps, then drill bits fire out of the tubes on the walls. These fly across the screen in a horizontal lines, then explode when they hit the other side. They can be swallowed for the Bomb ability.
Canopy Barrage
Clanky shakes about, causing pieces of its canopy to fall off and bounce into Kirby's space, then bounce off-screen. If Kirby hits these pieces hard enough, they will bounce back and hit Clanky instead.
Drill Poke
Clanky jumps into Kirby's space, occupying the upper portion. There, it uses its drills to attempt to prod Kirby. Its last attack leaves its drill stuck in the ground for a moment, creating two stars and leaving it open to retaliation.
Missiles
Clanky fires four inhalable missiles, two on each side, that home in on Kirby.

In Story Mode and The Arena, Clanky Woods attacks in a fixed order on loop as follows:

 1. Drill Cannons
 2. Canopy Barrage
 3. Drill Poke
 4. Missiles
 5. Canopy Barrage
 6. Drill Poke
 7. Drill Cannons
 8. Missiles
 9. Drill Poke

Once Clanky is defeated, it is ruptured by small internal explosions, and rendered inoperable. Unable to move, it sits in the middle of the arena and cries tears of oil as Kirby does his dance and finishes the level.

After the boss fight, Clanky is encountered one more time in Access Ark, Stage 8-EX. Here, Kirby can use the Robobot ArmTemplate:Or to defeat it during another chase-down sequence.

Like most other main bosses in the game, Clanky Woods has an upgraded variant, Clanky Woods 2.0, which is fought in both Meta Knightmare Returns and The True Arena. It bears a black canopy, a single wide eye, and is in general darker compared to its normal form.

The following lists all of Clanky Woods 2.0's attacks in Meta Knightmare Returns and The True Arena. Attacks that are used in multiple of the fights phases are summed up.

Attacks - 2.0
Attack Description
Missiles 2.0
Clanky 2.0 shoots two missiles out if its mouth cannon, which weakly home in on Kirby or Meta Knight. These can be inhaled for the Bomb ability or spat back. Clanky 2.0 shoots two waves of these in phase 1.
In phase 2, the missiles will travel around the ring. Clanky 2.0 shoots two waves of these. Those may vary in direction. It can also rapid fire eight missiles in one direction.
In phase 3, Clanky 2.0 fires four inhalable missiles, two on each side, that home in on Kirby or Meta Knight. This attack often precedes "Drill Poke 2.0" in the third phase.
Canopy Barrage 2.0
Clanky 2.0 jumps into the air, then hangs up-side down above Kirby or Meta Knight, shaking its canopy until pieces fall off to hit them. These pieces explode, but can be disabled by destroying or inhaling them. As a finisher, Clanky 2.0 drops multiple pieces at once which lay on the ground for a bit before exploding and leaving flames on the ground. These pieces are harder to disable.
In phase 3, Clanky 2.0 shakes about, causing pieces of its canopy to fall off and bounce into Kirby's or Meta Knight's space, then bounce off-screen. If Kirby or Meta Knight hit these pieces hard enough, they will bounce back and hit Clanky 2.0 instead.
Drill Slam 2.0
Clanky 2.0 hops into the air, then lands with legs extended onto the ground, drilling that spot, causing multiple inhalable boulders to fling out on both sides.
Drill Attack 2.0
Clanky 2.0 drills into the ground with its front legs, causing boulders to fly out of the ground.
In phase 2, this attack works mostly the same as in phase 1, except that Clanky 2.0's boulders now home in on Kirby or Meta Knight.
In phase 3, Clanky 2.0 drills into the ground with its front legs, causing boulders to fly out of the ground, then jumps and performs another in a different location. Across all phases, he boulders can be inhaled for the Stone ability or spat back, or just destroyed.
Slam 2.0
When returning to the stage, Clanky 2.0 can hurt Kirby or Meta Knight by falling on top of them.
Dash Charge 2.0
Clanky 2.0 halts, then begins dashing around the ring very quickly, leaving three stars behind it as it does so. It covers more than one full lap around the ring. When Clanky 2.0 performs its dash around the ring arena, it will slow down when it is sufficiently close to Kirby or Meta Knight.
Circular Stomp
Attack exclusive to Clanky Woods 2.0. Clanky 2.0 jumps around the ring in a circular pattern in an attempt to stomp Kirby or Meta Knight. It leaves one star after each jump.
Drill Cannons 2.0
Clanky 2.0 jumps, then drill bits fire out of the tubes on the walls. These fly across the screen in a horizontal lines, then explode when they hit the other side. They can be swallowed for the Bomb ability, or destroyed by an attack.
Drill Poke 2.0
Clanky 2.0 jumps into Kirby's or Meta Knight's space, occupying the upper portion. There, it uses its drills to attempt to prod Kirby or Meta Knight. Its last attack leaves its drill stuck in the ground for a moment, creating two stars and leaving it open to retaliation. Clanky 2.0 recovers from this faster than regular Clanky.

In phase 1 in Meta Knightmare Returns and The True Arena, Clanky Woods 2.0 always starts with these attacks:

 • Slam 2.0
 • Missiles 2.0

Afterwards, it attacks in a fixed order on loop as follows:

 1. Canopy Barrage 2.0
 2. Slam 2.0
 3. Drill Attack 2.0

In phase 3 in Meta Knightmare Returns and The True Arena, Clanky Woods 2.0 attacks in a fixed order on loop as follows:

 1. Drill Attack 2.0
 2. Drill Cannons 2.0
 3. Missiles 2.0
 4. Drill Poke 2.0
 5. Drill Cannons 2.0
 6. Canopy Barrage 2.0
 7. Drill Poke 2.0

Trivia

 • Despite being described as a mechanized form of Whispy Woods, Clanky Woods is consistently referred to with the gender-neutral term "it", where Whispy is typically referred to with the male "he". It is unclear whether or not this discrepancy was intentional.
