"Climbing Trees", named "Meteor Shower" in the British English version, is a stage theme from Kirby Mass Attack that plays in the shooter section of Volcano Valley - Stage 10. It was composed by Shogo Sakai.
Composition
"Climbing Trees" is a dramatic and impetuous theme in G minor and 4/4. It begins with a double intro featuring a descending string arpeggio in the dominant with xylophone tremolo and low sixteenth notes circling around the dominant tone (structurally resembling the intro of "The Skull Gang"), leading into a brief timpani segment adding to a march-like character. The melody is somewhat unstable, as it revolves around the tonic triad in first inversion, the tonic itself only appearing briefly, accentuated by the xylophone and frantically alternating with the dominant tone instead in the likes of "Green Grounds" or the third section of "Air Ride: Frozen Hillside". The motif moves upwards in a sequence, then turns to a descending string and xylophone passage of alternating thirds. The melody finally resolves by changing the direction of the opening notes of the motif towards tonic. Cymbal crashes appear between these resolving phrases.
The first section repeats with some changes, notably, the flute joining the melody a tenth apart. Rather than ending in the tonic with cymbal crashes, rising triads from "Woods Wayfarer" burst through with newly added trumpets. With the circling sixteenth notes in the background, the strings lead a function-based melody slowly up, while the trumpets respond to each note with their own loud chord. The intro then repeats as the track loops.
