"Battle with Friends: King Dedede"[conjectural title] is the theme that plays during Kirby's battle against King Dedede in Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards. It was composed by Jun Ishikawa.[1]
Composition[edit]
"Battle with Friends: King Dedede" is the most frantic of the trio of "Battle with Friends" themes, featuring a non-stop semiquaver accompaniment and similarly rapid melody. Set in C minor, it develops on the same element as "Battle with Friends: Waddle Dee", which draws its origins from the Mini-Game theme from Kirby's Dream Land 3. This element is doubled not only in speed, but also in length. It goes through two large phrases full of small accidentals, with the second phrase an octave above the first. The first phrase transitions to the second through the dominant, while the final phrase passes from dominant to subdominant back to tonic. The pace does not stop whatsoever, as upon resolving the track immediately loops.
The frantic aspect of "Battle with Friends: King Dedede" and specific beginning of the phrase from its higher note (C) would go on to characterize "Bomb Rally", another derivative of the Mini-Game theme.
Other appearances[edit]
The theme is part of a medley in the Hoshi no Kirby 64 Original Soundtrack, packaged alongside "Battle with Friends: Waddle Dee" and "Battle with Friends: Adeleine". The overall medley is titled "Battle with Friends", and is track 12.
