In his simplest incarnations, he is incapable of moving, and can only attack by dropping [[apple]]s and blowing [[Air Bullet]]s at Kirby, but his many appearances and variants give him a variety of additional attacks, and in some cases, allow him to hop around or even run after his opponents. 

Along with [[Kracko]], Whispy Woods is one of the most iconic boss characters in the [[Kirby (series)|''Kirby'' series]], having made dozens of appearances since his debut in ''[[Kirby's Dream Land]]'', as well as appearing in the ''[[Super Smash Bros. (series)|Super Smash Bros.]]'' series and in other media such as the [[Kirby: Right Back at Ya!|anime]] and [[Kirby (novel series)|novel series]]. Additionally, there are many other entities throughout the series that are either related to Whispy Woods, inspired by him, or both. Whispy Woods is almost always an enemy to Kirby, though he does very occasionally appear as a neutral character or even an ally. The most notable examples of Whispy Woods being an ally are in ''[[Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble]]'' and the anime series, ''Kirby: Right Back at Ya!''.

His name comes from the words "wispy" (meaning fine, feathery, or delicate), a term often used to describe plants and trees, and "whisper" (meaning to speak softly with one's breath), which reflects the wind-based attacks he utilizes. His name has been misspelled "Wispy Woods" (in ''[[Kirby's Pinball Land]]'') and "Whisper Woods" (in the original ''[[Super Smash Bros.]]'').

==Physical appearance==
Whispy Woods is characterized as an anthropomorphized apple tree with a humanoid 'face', though his nose is just a branch and his eyes and mouth are holes in his trunk which can widen and contract as needed. Being a tree, Whispy usually cannot move very much, generally being rooted to a fixed location whenever he is encountered. However, he can uproot himself to crawl or jump around, a fact which was first confirmed in ''[[Kirby's Dream Land 3]]''. Whispy is, for reasons typically unexplained, usually hostile towards Kirby and his friends, and attacks mainly by dropping [[Apple]]s from his canopy, or by blowing out [[Air Bullet]]s from his mouth. His apples can be [[Inhale]]d and used against him, and he is particularly weak to [[Fire]]-based attacks as well.

Whispy Woods keeps his general look from game to game, though the particulars of his canopy size, trunk width, and other minor details tend to vary. Often, the front part of his canopy stretches out further than the back part, though this is less pronounced in games where he can jump to a new location.

Prior to ''Kirby Super Star'', and past that up to ''Kirby Tilt 'n' Tumble'', Whispy Woods was depicted without any lower stubs or branches on his sides. From ''Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land'' onward, Whispy fairly consistently has two stubs on his sides which resemble arms to an extent, but are completely useless to the tree. In some newer games, such as ''Kirby and the Rainbow Curse'', he is depicted with only one; in others, such as ''Kirby Mass Attack'', he has none at all.

===Location===
Whispy Woods makes his home in the lush greenery of [[Dream Land]] on Planet [[Popstar]], usually within a thick forest area. It is unknown if he routinely migrates, or if he lives in the same spot while the scenery changes around him (as he can be found in many differently-named areas, it may be that the area he resides in simply gets renamed again and again). However, Whispy Woods is able to uproot himself and even jump around in many games, which may explain his migration. Additionally, he can also be found in other more remote places — such as [[Green Grounds]] on the [[Popopo Islands]] — or on other worlds entirely — like [[Seventopia]] and [[Falluna Moon]] — which would suggest that there is more than one Whispy.

Whispy Woods is the first Boss of ''[[Kirby's Dream Land]]'', fought at the end of [[Green Greens]] and later on appears in [[Mt. Dedede]]. His attack patterns are extremely simple, and will either shoot out a few [[Air Bullet]]s at [[Kirby]], or will drop [[Apple]]s from his canopy. Kirby can inhale the apples and spit them back out as [[Star Bullet]]s to deal Whispy damage. After six hits, he stops fighting, and yields a [[Sparkling Star]] for Kirby to collect.

In pre-release material for the game, Whispy Woods was referred to as "Buster Woddo".<ref>"Buster Woddo" can be seen in [https://archive.org/details/kirbys20thanniversary/Kirby_s%2020th%20Anniversary%20(22).JPG the ''Kirby's 20th Anniversary Celebration Booklet''] that came with ''[[Kirby's Dream Collection Special Edition]]''.</ref> This fact was later referenced in [[:File:TKCD Twitter - Whispy Work Password.jpg|a password for ''Team Kirby Clash Deluxe'']]. Whispy serves as the first boss in ''[[Kirby's Dream Land 2]]'', at the end of [[Grass Land (Kirby's Dream Land 2)|Grass Land]]. In his first phase, he wears glasses and a surgical mask, preventing him from shooting out air bullets. However, he can now attack with his roots. Once he is hit enough times, his accessories fall off, and he continues the fight as usual.

The glasses and mask are likely an ironic joke, as these are commonly worn to prevent [[wikipedia:hay fever|hay fever]], especially in Japan; hay fever is itself caused by allergies to the pollen created by plants.

Partway into the fight, Whispy grows much larger, and starts emitting purple gas from his eyes and mouth. Whispy Woods makes an appearance in cake form as a stage hazard in ''[[Kirby's Dream Buffet]]''. He is primarily found on the [[Whispy Stage Cake]] [[Battle Royale (Kirby's Dream Buffet)|Battle Royale]] stage, and routinely hops back and forth between three different positions on the board: left, center, and right. When Kirby bumps into him, he will drop [[Strawberry|strawberries]] from his canopy, dropping a greater amount if he had not been hit for a while. Much like in [[City Trial]], if Whispy is hit too many times, he will be "defeated" and adopt his sad expression. He will drop a lot of strawberries when this happens, but afterward he will cease to drop any for a while. When the time is up in the game, Whispy Woods will smile and waves his stump arms along with the Kirbys.

Whispy Woods also makes an appearance in the [[Free Rolling]] Mode, where he can be found near the back of the stage on the right side, near some [[Food Box]]es and [[Gordo]]s. Whispy Woods has appeared in every ''[[Super Smash Bros. (series)|Super Smash Bros.]]'' game as a stage hazard for ''Kirby''-based stages. In the [[Super Smash Bros.|original N64 game]], he appears as part of the [[smashwiki:Dream Land (SSB)|Dream Land]] stage, occasionally blowing gusts of wind that cause all the players on one side of the stage to slide sideways. Oddly, Whispy's name is misspelt as "Whisper Woods" in the instruction manual.

In ''[[Super Smash Bros. Melee]]'', Whispy Woods is found in the background of the [[Green Greens]] stage. He will occasionally blow, which will move the fighters. He will also sometimes launch several apples onto the stage, which can be eaten as healing items or thrown at opponents (this is determined at random when the apple is picked up).

In the [[Kirby (novel series)|''Kirby'' novel series]], Whispy Woods appears in ''[[Kirby's Decisive Battle! Battle Royale!!]]'' as a supporting character and in ''[[Kirby: Uproar at the Kirby Café?!]]'' as a tetartagonist.

In ''Kirby's Decisive Battle! Battle Royale!!'', after [[Soldier Waddle Dee]] challenges [[Kirby (novel character)|Kirby]] to a match of [[Apple Scramble]], they go to the arena and find Whispy Woods. He tells Kirby that he wanted to participate in Dedede's Cake Royale, but a group of Waddle Dees who wanted apples has rooted him in the dry soil of the arena. Needing to collect apples as part of the match, Kirby asks Whispy Woods to help him, but he refuses, since he doesn't want to help another competitor. He drops fruits to attack Kirby, who dodges and gathers the fruits. Becoming angry, he shoots air bullets at Kirby, who begs him to stop. Kirby fights Whispy Woods, which causes him to drop even more fruits, and Kirby picks them to win the match.

In ''Kirby: Uproar at the Kirby Café?!'', [[King Dedede (novel character)|King Dedede]] notices that Whispy Woods is sleeping and plucks an apple of him. At the same time, an insect bites Whispy Woods, causing him to wake up, scream and shake his branches, leading to an apple falling on Dedede's head. Thinking that Dedede was the one attacking him, Whispy becomes angry at him and demands apology. Dedede refuses, so Whispy shoots an air bullet at him. King Dedede runs away and swears to never eat Whispy's fruits again.

When [[Chef Kawasaki (novel character)|Chef Kawasaki]] creates a new pie containing Whispy Woods' fruits, he and Kirby go to collect Whispy's fruits. Whispy, who remained grumpy about his quarrel with Dedede, cheers up after hearing them complimenting the taste of his fruits. He laughs and causes fruits to fall, and Kirby and Kawasaki pick them up. Kirby visits Whispy Woods to gather more fruits, joined by [[Waddle Dee (novel character)|Bandana Waddle Dee]]. When he sees Waddle Dee, Dedede's servant, Whispy becomes angry and asks Waddle if Dedede wants to steal more of his fruits. Kirby tells him that Waddle Dee only came to help collect the fruits, but he refuses to give his fruits to anyone working for Dedede. After Kirby becomes mad from his behavior, Whispy freaks out and apologizes, and Kirby and Waddle Dee gather the fruits to the restaurant.

After going back and forth gathering fruit, Kirby gets the idea to move the restaurant near Whispy, but Chef Kawasaki tells him that instead they should open a new café around him. When they start building furniture for the new café, [[Bronto Burt]] come and asks if it was King Dedede's idea, causing Whispy Woods to become mad and say that he won't allow Dedede to enter the new café. Later, while they continue working, they notice that Whispy looks ill. He tells them that he is fine, but the disease from the insect begins to affect him.

Whispy's condition continues to worsen, he is feeling sick and cold, his leaves have started to wilt, and his fruits have turned sour. After worrying that they will lose the competition against the Dedede Café, Whispy promises to Kirby and Chef Kawasaki that he will heal in time to produce fruits for the competition. Kirby tells him that he will search for medicine for him. When King Dedede visits Whispy Woods, he initially thinks that he came to ridicule him. Dedede denies that and teases him, but after hearing about Whispy's symptoms, he recognizes them as the same as his illness. They understand that the sting that Whispy felt before they fought was from the insect bite and King Dedede and Kirby go to find [[Green Spider Grass]] for the medicine.

When Kirby and King Dedede return with the cure, Whispy Woods doesn't answer them. Dedede tickles his nose with the Green Spider Grass and cause him to sneeze and wake up. While his mouth is open, he pours to it the medicine. Whispy at first becomes angry, but quickly realizes the medicine healing effect starts to work. After being cured, he quickly produces a lot of apples for the competition. King Dedede apologizes to Whispy Woods and tells him that the reason that they were mad at each other was because of the effect of the insect bite. Whispy tells him that he was just in a bad mood, while Dedede denies it. Whispy Woods thanks Dedede for the cure and they make peace with each other.
