'''Rick''' is a large hamster-like creature and one of [[Kirby]]'s six [[Animal Friend]]s, making his first appearance in ''[[Kirby's Dream Land 2]]''. Rick makes his most prominent appearances in ''Kirby's Dream Land 2'', ''[[Kirby's Dream Land 3]]'', and ''[[Kirby Star Allies]]'', where he is a playable character (though always paired up with either Kirby, [[Gooey]], or another Animal Friend). He has appeared in a large number of other games as well, though he rarely makes more than a cameo appearance, and is seldom seen in isolation from [[Kine]] and [[Coo]]. Rick also has a supporting role in the anime series ''[[Kirby: Right Back at Ya!]]'', where he has the ability to speak in full sentences and lives with other intelligent animals in a big [[Acore|oak tree]] in an [[Eastern Forest|ancient woodland]].

==Characteristics==
Rick's appearance is that of a large and bulbous bipedal hamster with relatively short arms and stubby pink feet similar to those of Kirby. Despite his rounded features, however, he does have a distinct head and body, unlike the pink puffball who rides on his back. Rick's fur is largely white, with prominent orange splotches covering the top of his head and on his back. His face consists of two small beady eyes spread far apart, with a small snout between them tipped by a pink triangular nose and a set of whiskers, and two small pointed ears on top of his head. He has a small rounded tail which is not always visible due to his bulbous shape.

Rick's forte is his speed and versatility on the ground, being able to walk on icy surfaces with better traction compared to other characters, and being able to jump off the heads of enemies to gain additional height, partially making up for his inability to hover or jump in midair. His swimming speed is also fairly slow. Last but not least in his movement kit is the ability to climb walls, which he does with great effectiveness in stages such as [[Cloudy Park - Stage 5 (Kirby's Dream Land 3)|Cloudy Park - Stage 5]] in ''[[Kirby's Dream Land 3]]''. Unlike the other Animal Friends, Rick will eat enemies directly when paired up with Kirby or Gooey, though he can only [[inhale]] in ''[[Kirby's Dream Land 2]]''.

Rick can be considered to be the most prominent of Kirby's six Animal Friends, since he is always the first to be introduced, and is usually the one that Kirby pairs up with in artwork and in-game cutscenes. He has also shown up in cameo appearances more often than his two main counterparts [[Kine]] and [[Coo]]. Like the other Animal Friends, Rick is always angling to get Kirby to travel with him, and can be seen sobbing when Kirby picks someone else as a companion. Rick also has a tendency to occasionally bully both Kine and Coo, particularly in the time-out cutscenes in the [[Round Clear (Game Boy)|Round Clear]] mode of ''[[Kirby's Star Stacker (Game Boy)|Kirby's Star Stacker]]'' for [[Game Boy]].

Rick makes his debut appearance as an [[Animal Friend]] in ''[[Kirby's Dream Land 2]]''. He is the first friend [[Kirby]] meets on his adventure, appearing in the second stage of [[Grass Land (Kirby's Dream Land 2)|Grass Land]] as well as in the level's intro.

When traveling together with Rick, Kirby rides on his back. Teaming up with the hamster enables him to walk a little bit faster and prevents him from slipping on ice, but makes him unable to fly, which can make certain locations impossible to escape from without leaving the friend behind. Additionally, Rick can inhale, swallow, and spit out enemies like Kirby.

Like the other Animal Friends, teaming up with Rick while possessing a [[Copy Ability]] grants Kirby access to new skills, which combine Rick's powers with the attributes of Kirby's ability. When Rick is with Kirby, his theme music also plays.

Just like the other animals, he appears as one of the three types of Friend Blocks essential for destroying the various other kinds of blocks. As such, it acts identically to the other two Friend Blocks but requires other Rick blocks for a reaction to take place.

Apart from being an integral gameplay element, the hamster is also seen in the various "time out" cutscenes between rounds, where he can often be seen toying with the other two friends, as well as in several of the pictures unlocked by completing certain modes. Finishing Normal mode shows him and Kirby having a picnic in a woodland, and he is seen together with the other Animal Friends in the pictures awarded for completing Super Hard and Insane!.

Rick returns as a friend for Kirby to team up with in ''[[Kirby's Dream Land 3]]'', alongside the other Animal Friends from the game's predecessor. Although his design remains mostly the same, the spots of his fur have become brighter, particularly in his in-game sprites, where they are almost yellow. He appears together with [[Nago]] in the first stage of Grass Land, and can once again be seen in the intro of the level.

Although Rick still does not slip on ice like in the previous game, his other powers have changed greatly; the hamster is now able to wall-jump, allowing him to climb walls that would otherwise not be passable, but is considerably slower and has lost the ability to inhale. Instead, Rick opens his mouth while the Y button is held and is able to eat enemies he walks into. Once an opponent is in his mouth, however, he can spit it out or swallow it as if he had inhaled it. The [[Propeller]] enemy moves faster in his presence if it possesses a yellow coloring.

Just like other Animal Friends, the hamster once again grants Kirby access to different skills if the pink hero possesses a Copy Ability, although a few of these combinations differ slightly from those of the previous game.

Rick is a recurring character in the anime series ''[[Kirby: Right Back at Ya!]]''. He is an intelligent animal native to [[Dream Land (anime)|Dream Land]] who is capable of talking to the residents of [[Cappy Town]]. He often takes interests in the affairs of the children, and will sometimes try to defend them. He has no special relationship with [[Kirby (anime character)|Kirby]], but will still help the pink puffball when he can. Rick lives with many other animals in the [[Eastern Forest]], taking shelter in the gnarls of [[Acore]].

In the English 4Kids dub, Rick is portrayed with a strong Australian accent, and the sound of didgeridoos can sometimes be heard when he is in a scene. In the Japanese version, he is voiced by [[Makiko Ohmoto]], the same actress who voices Kirby.

In the [[Kirby (novel series)|''Kirby'' novel series]], Rick appears as a deuteragonist in ''[[Kirby: Save the Rainbow Islands!]]'' together with [[Coo]] and [[Kine]]. He is a resident of the [[Rainbow Islands]] and one of [[Kirby (novel character)|Kirby]]'s [[Animal Friend]]s. Similarly to his game [[Stone]] transformation specifically, his main attack method consists in rolling into a rock and tackling an opponent.

In ''[[Kirby: Save the Rainbow Islands!]]'', he comes to [[Dream Land]] with [[Coo]] and [[Kine]] to ask Kirby to help find the cause of the drought on the Rainbow Islands. In their search, they find [[Pirika]], who indicates at an intruder in the clouds as the culprit. After receiving a good-luck charm in the form of a [[Protective Bag|pouch]] from his girlfriend [[Pick]], he sets off to the lake in the sky with the rest.

At the lake, they find their friend [[Gooey]], who dammed up the lake. Gooey attacks Pirika, so they retreat to regroup. After Kine and Kirby fail to enter the water to investigate for the potential mastermind, Pirika urges Rick to go, which he accepts quite reluctantly since he dislikes water. However, he too fails, as he is stopped by Gooey and thrown into a [[Dreamstalk|tree]], causing him to lose consciousness. Over this time, Pirika is revealed to have been the true mastermind behind the plan and uses the lake's water to control [[King Dedede (novel character)|King Dedede]] and [[Meta Knight (novel character)|Meta Knight]]. After [[Coo]] brings him and [[Kine]] back to, the three fight against their controlled friends, and then subdue them and Pirika in the pouch from Pick.

As they catch a break, Gooey tells his side of the story, explaining that he tried to prevent the contaminated water from pouring down over the Rainbow Islands, and Rick gratefully hugs their savior. Eventually King Dedede and Meta Knight break out of the pouch, so the Animal Friends continue the battle. However, it is cut short after Kirby inhales all the lake water. They find Kirby in great pain, but he recovers almost immediately. They then confront Pirika and have her explain her motives. Kirby, sympathetic after her story, offers to become her friend, and the rest follow queue. Her spell is broken, and the group engages in a friendly game of tag before heading back to the Rainbow Islands to celebrate the return of the rain.
