This is usually done to prevent vital pages and those with a high risk of being targeted by wiki vandals from being {{UserLang|us=vandalized|gb=vandalised}}. The exact reasoning behind the article in question being locked will be displayed when a user attempts to edit the page, and the article's talk page may provide additional information on the subject.

Protected Pages are just that: articles which have been protected to stop any editor who is not an Administrator from editing them. This is usually done to userspace and policy pages; all mainspace articles are unprotected (per a proposal that passed on November 25, 2020).

Protection Levels

  • An Unprotected page allows all users to edit. Pages with this level of protection may also usually be moved by any registered user.
  • AutoConfirmed Users Only protected pages prevents the newest members from editing a page; also see Help:Group Rights#Autoconfirmed Users.
  • Administrators Only is the highest level of protection. This prevents anyone from editing or moving a page unless they have Administrator/Bureaucrat privileges enabled.

(Note that the above levels of protection may be applied independently to editing and moving rights; e.g. an article that can be edited by all users may not always be moveable by them.)
