Depending on the region it is found in, an Apolo may have one of two different color schemes: whereas the specimens dwelling closer to the ground are brown with a pink tip, those found in greater heights, such as Cloudy Park, are blue, their front half being a lighter and more greenish shade of the color than the rest of their body.

First encountered in the fourth section of the sixth stage of Grass Land, Apolos are sparsely seen throughout the game. They are always attached to a vertical, cylindrical body, such as a tree or a rock pillar, and rapidly circle around it in a consistent motion. Although they possess no attacks, touching them causes Kirby to lose health.

Apolos are vulnerable to any attack. While inhaling and swallowing them does not grant Kirby a Copy Ability, doing so to the brown Apolo restores half a point of health to Kirby. The blue Apolos in Cloudy Park do not heal Kirby when swallowed, however.
