Yarn Transformation

Yarn Transformation is a catch-all term used to describe the many ways in which Kirby and Prince Fluff can shape-shift their own bodies when performing certain actions in Kirby's Epic Yarn and Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn.

List of transformations[edit]

Normal transformations[edit]

The following are transformations which Kirby and Fluff can undergo during normal gameplay:

Normal yarn transformations
Transformation Button execution Description Notes
← or → twice quickly Kirby/Fluff turn into a small automobile, allowing them to travel much faster and gain momentum, but losing the ability to turn quickly. In the Frosty Wheel stage, the Sleigh is used instead, which has slightly different properties.
Hold 2 in midair Kirby/Fluff transform into a small parachute which falls very slowly and can be directed slowly to the left or right, similar to the Parasol Copy Ability in main series games. This transformation can also be used to ride along wind currents.
Latch onto a suitable button with the Yarn Whip Kirby/Fluff can swing from certain buttons as a pendulum on a rope. Using ← or → allows them to shift their momentum, and pressing 2 releases the form, conserving momentum gained into a potential jump. This transformation is used to ring the bonus bell at the end of stages.
Hold 1 after grabbing a target with the Yarn Whip Kirby/Fluff turn into a spinning top and transform something they've grabbed into a Yarn ball, which can then be thrown as a projectile.
Push D pad toward a narrow opening Kirby/Fluff turn into a single strand of yarn that can travel through narrow tunnels. In this form, they are forced to move constantly along the tunnel, only being allowed to change direction to go backwards or turn at a junction. They revert to normal automatically upon exiting the tunnel.
Enter water Kirby/Fluff turn into a small fish-like submarine which is propelled by repeatedly pressing 2. In this form, they can no longer jump unless it is outside of the water at its surface, but retain the Yarn Whip.
↓ in midair Kirby/Fluff turn into a weight and drop rapidly to the floor, crashing through most enemies and yarn/cloth blocks in the process. In Mysterious UFO, when the gravity is turned down, the weight cannot be used to attack.

Minor transformations[edit]

In addition to the normal transformations which Kirby/Fluff can use, there are also a number of minor transformations which they can undergo during some actions. They are as follows (names are conjectural):

Minor yarn transformations
Transformation Button execution Description
KEY Melody Town 3.jpg
Musical note
Automatic in some places Kirby/Fluff turn into musical notes as they ride sheet lines in Melody Town. In this form, they move forward automatically and can only move up or down on the lines to collect beads.
← or → twice quickly in Frosty Wheel In Frosty Wheel only, Kirby and Prince Fluff turn into a sleigh rather than a car. Unlike the car, the sleigh gains speed when going down slopes, allowing it to go much faster and make high jumps. This accumulated speed will disappear when turning or letting go of the button. The sleigh can also cross small gaps and tread the surface of water.

Spring
2 on the ground Kirby/Fluff's feet turn into a spring when they jump from the ground. This transformation is purely cosmetic.
KEY Tow Truck Kirby.png
Tow truck
Latch onto a zipper and move against it Kirby/Fluff turn into little tow trucks with treads and pull on zippers after latching onto them with the Yarn Whip. This process is somewhat slow, and continues until the zipper is fully unzipped.

N/A After completing a stage, Kirby/Fluff may transform into various things during the victory dance. These things include above transformations like the Parachute, but can also include an umbrella and a baseball, which are not seen elsewhere.

Metamortex Transformations[edit]

These transformations require the use of a Metamortex and are only found in particular areas. Once transformed, Kirby/Fluff cannot return to normal until they pass through a Reel Gate or exit the stage:

Metamortex transformations
Transformation Controls Description Notes
← or → to move
2 to jump
1 to dig + control pad for digging direction
Kirby and/or Fluff transform into bulky spherical digging machines with claws that are used both for locomotion and to dig through cotton. These claws can also be used to attack enemies. This is one of the transformations where Kirby and Fluff remain separate.
Control pad to steer
Hold 2 to swim
1 to use a charge attack
Kirby and/or Fluff transform into large dolphin-like forms which can move quickly in water, but lose the ability to maneuver on land. By building up momentum, they can leap out of water in arcs to gain significant height. This is one of the transformations where Kirby and Fluff remain separate.
← or → to move
Point Wii Remote to aim
Hold 1 to spray water
2 to jump
Kirby and/or Fluff transform into little fire trucks that can drive back and forth and spray water at fires to put them out. This is one of the transformations where Kirby and Fluff remain separate.
Player 1:
Hold 1 to move
2 to jump
Player 2:
shake Wii Remote for a boost
Kirby and/or Fluff transform into an off-road vehicle which can only move towards the right, but at high speed. Hitting/using a boost allows the Off-Roader to move faster and plow through enemies/obstacles for a short time. The second player turns into a booster for the main vehicle.
D pad to move
Press 1 repeatedly to fire spreading shots
Hold 1 to fire a line of shots
Kirby and/or Fluff transform into small rocket ships that continually fly upward. As they travel, they can freely move around and fire star shots at oncoming enemies. This is one of the transformations where Kirby and Fluff remain separate.
D pad to move
Hold 2 to capture
Press 1 to release charge
Kirby and/or Fluff transform into flying saucers that can float freely through the air and capture objects, including beads and enemies, with a tractor beam. When enough enemies or blocks are captured, a charge is built up which can be released to destroy obstacles and defeat enemies. This is one of the transformations where Kirby and Fluff remain separate.
Player 1:
Press 2 to jump
Press 1 to spin
Player 2:
Press 2 to flap to assist with jumping
Kirby and/or Fluff transform into a bulky figure riding a surf board. Movement is automatic in this form, with the only other actions being the ability to jump and spin to attack enemies, bouncing off them if done in midair. The second player turns into a small bird perched on the boarder's head which can flap its wings to assist with jumping and spinning.
D pad to move
Press 1 repeatedly to fire spreading shots
Hold 1 to fire a line of shots
Kirby and/or Fluff transform into Starships that continually fly forward. As they travel, they can freely move around and fire star shots at oncoming enemies. This is one of the transformations where Kirby and Fluff remain separate.
Player 1:
← or → to move
Tilt Wii Remote to aim and press 1 to fire a missile
Hold 2 to hover slowly upwards
Player 2:
Tilt Wii Remote to aim boxing glove
Press 1 to punch
Press 2 to Rocket Punch and tilt Wii Remote to steer
Shake Wii Remote to cause boxing glove to rotate rapidly
Kirby and/or Fluff transform into a big round tank on treads that is packed with weaponry. Movement is limited and rather slow, but endless missiles can be fired at enemies. The second player gains control of a boxing glove that can be used in various ways to attack enemies.
Point Wii Remote and hold A to draw tracks
Press B to change direction
Kirby and/or Fluff transform into a small train that can ride on tracks drawn using the Wii Remote. They move forward automatically and attach to tracks, can only be made to turn around, and will boost when touching a boost patch. The second player becomes another cart on the train, and can draw their own train tracks.
